CBS freshman drama Scorpion landed the plum slot following the NFL’s AFC Championship Game: Sunday, January 18 at 10p(ish). Monday night, another original ep airs in the show’s regular 9p time period. Scorpion is the number two new program of the season, averaging 15.23 million viewers and 3.7/10 among A18-49.

IN THE NEWS

The episode of Fox’s The Simpsons airing Sunday, January 11 was written by Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) – in 1995. The director told TV Guide he was 22 and a fan of the new show when he submitted a spec scrip. Simpsons exec producer Al Jean found out about the long-ago effort when Apatow mentioned it in an interview, and “Al and the staff did their Simpsons magic on it,” said Apatow. “They turned my messy little effort into Cinderella.”

Two artists from Oxygen’s upcoming Street Art Throwdown, premiering Tuesday, February 3 at 9p, are at CES today through Thursday, doing their stuff at the Polaroid booth. Solomon Perry and Annie Preece will live paint for three days at the event.

Jenna Lee has returned as co-host of Fox News Channel’s Happening Now. Lee had been on maternity leave since August 13.

Dish Network announced at CES Monday that the basic package for its upcoming streaming service, Sling TV, will be priced at just $20 per month and include channels from Turner Broadcasting (CNN, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim) as well as ESPN, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, and content from Maker Studios. Add-on packages for news, sports and other programming will be offered for $5/month.

Amazon isn’t taking The After after all. The Chris Carter (The X-Files) sci-fi drama from Georgeville TV was given a series order in March, but Amazon has “decided not to move forward,” said Roy Price, VP of Amazon Studios. The show’s pilot, the only episode that made it to film, aired on Amazon Prime last year.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

As the Sony hacking incident continues to reverberate, Syfy is developing Hackers, a reality series about computer hackers. The project with Relativity Television will use digital graphics to show what happens when a computer network is broken into, and include interviews with real-life hackers who explain how they did it. Relativity Television’s Tom Forman and Brad Bishop exec produce.

YouTube superstar Grace Helbig (It’s Grace) will star in a hybrid comedy/talker for E!, slated to premiere in April and described as a “forward-thinking talk show that speaks so perfectly to our audience and to the core of E!’s pop culture brand,”said Jeff Olde, EVP, original programming & development. Added Helbig, “Congratulations to E! for giving an internet-obsessed introvert a talk show.I’m looking forward to working with humans.”

The Weinsten Company (Project Runway) and American Media Inc. (The National Enquirer) are developing a daily syndicated talk show based on AMI gossip site Radar Online (Monday headline: Just Desserts? Teresa Giudice Feasts on Beans & Franks During First Day In Prison). “Our television department has made a huge mark in the reality programming sector, and we’re so happy to be taking the next step into the talk show format,” said TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein.

COMING UP

An Olympic skier’s attempted comeback is chronicled in Lindsey Vonn: the Climb, premiering Sunday, January 25 at 3p on NBC. The documentary, produced by Red Bull Media House in association with NFL Films and NBC Olympics, will be available digitally on Red Bull TV beginning January 28, and air on NBCSN starting in February.

ABC Family is launching its new Pretty Little Liars Snapchat account today with a sneak peek at the first three minutes of the drama’s winter premiere, airing tonight at 8p. No stranger to social media, PLL is the top scripted show on Instagram and Pinterest, and has 14.5 million Facebook fans.

The grass is always greener: Al Jazeera America’s “A Year On Pot,” presented on America Tonight, looks at a host of unexpected problems brought on by Colorado’s legalization of marijuana. Three part series airs tonight through Thursday, January 8 at 9p, with a report on Sunday, January 11 about cannabis journalism.

Netflix set Friday, January 16 as the start date for The Adventures of Puss in Boots, with new episodes premiering throughout the year. New original series from DreamWorks Animation is “an event the whole family will enjoy,” promised Cindy Holland, VP of original content at Netflix.

Rob Riggle (Dumb & Dumber To) is set to host CMT’s Ultimate Kickoff Party, live from Dallas on Friday, January 9 at 9p. The 90-minute special, including performances from stars including Tony Keith, Lady Antebellum and Big & Rich, serves as a kickoff entertainment event for the inaugural College Football National Championship, airing Monday, January 12 on ESPN.

Duff Goldman (Ace of Cakes) and Valerie Bertinelli (Hot in Cleveland) host Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship. Four-ep series launches Monday, February 2 at 8p.

The U.S. premiere of the new season of acclaimed UK drama Foyle’s War launches on British programming streaming service Acorn TV Monday, February 2. Also added to the slate: Secret State, The Man Who Lost his Head, The Blue Rose, The Palace, London Irish, The Rise of the Nazi Party and Australian comedy Kath & Kim.

Giuliana Rancic and Ross Matthews host E!’s Live from the Red Carpet at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday, January 7 at 8p. Trophies handed out on CBS starting at 9p.

The Producers Guild of America announced nominees for the David L. Wolper Award for long-form television on Monday. Tips of the hat went to American Horror Story: Freak Show, Fargo, The Normal Heart, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History and Sherlock. Nominees were also announced for the 19th Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards. Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Gotham, The Knick and Boardwalk Empire earned nods for one-hour period of fantasy single-camera series and Homeland, House of Cards, Justified, The Newsroom and True Detective landed noms for contemporary series. RETURNING SHOWS

It’s back to the Dark Ages. Vikings returns for season three Thursday, February 19 at 10p on History, with Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) leading his people to an uncertain fate. Need to catch up on all those promises King Ecbert made? Seasons one and two are streaming on Hulu and Amazon.

Season six of Sportsman’s MeatEater, launching Thursday, January 8 at 8p, includes another visit from comedic duo Joe Rogan (Fear Factor) and Bryan Callen (Fat Actress), for a “laugh-out-loud” deer hunt. Also in store: wild game recipes from host Steven Rinella’s upocoming book, The Complete Guide to Hunting, Butchering, and Cooking Wild Game.

Bellum Entertainent and Raycom Media announced the renewal of their strip series, Fix It & Finish It for season two, and Flip My Food for season three, each with an order of 150 eps. “We continue to explore unique revenue models for stations groups,” said Boots Walker, VP of Bellum.“With both these shows, the stations are invested in their success and have been incredible partners.”

CASTING

Revenge’s Elena Satine (Louise Ellis) has been elevated to series regular, said the Hollywood Reporter. Soapy drama airs Sundays at 10p.

David Alan Grier (Bad Teacher) landed in NBC comedy pilot Go Jerrod Go, starring Jerrod Carmichael and based on his stand-up routine.

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

BabyFirst, delivering child development programming to children and their parents, has launched on Time Warner Cable on the digital basic tier to more than 20 markets, including New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas and San Diego. RATINGS

Saturday’s NFL playoff game on NBC averaged 15.8/27, according to Nielsen fast nationals, making it the second-most-watched AFC wild card game on Saturday in 20 years. NBC’s Saturday Night Live repeat averaged 3.6/10, topping all other broadcast nets’ primetime programming. The NFC wild card game, the first to air on ESPN, was the eighth-most-watched telecast ever on cable, with an average 12.5 household rating.

Sunday’s premiere of Galavant on ABC hit 2.1/6 among A18-49 and 7.9 million viewers at 8p to rank as the third-highest comedy debut of the season.

The season 14 premiere of NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice jumped 35 percent from its 2013 debut, to 2.3 among A18-49.

HGTV landed in 2014’s top 10 cable network in primetime among viewers P25-54, its highest yearly cable ranking ever. The net’s primetime ratings grew 4 percent year over year, with Property Brothers, Property Brothers at Home, Flipping the Block and Tiny House Hunters pulling in the highest number of viewers.HGTV also continued to attract the well-heeled, finishing 2014 as the top cable network among upscale W25-54 for the eighth consecutive year.

Little Women: LA hit a series high 1.5 million total viewers for its season two premiere on Thursday, up 84 percent from its season one bow, as well as 882,000 among A25-54 (up 120 percent) and 818,000 among A18-49 (up 111 percent). Immediately following, the net’s new docu-soap, Big Women: Big Love, drew an average 1.0 million total viewers, 604,000 among A25-54 and 438,000 A18-49.

The week of December 15, Ellen DeGeneres was the top syndicated talker for the first time since the week of December 16, 2013, up 7 percent from last year for a season high 3.2 with special Christmas shows. Dr. Phil slipped 11 percent from last year to hit 3.1, a number matched by Live with Kelly & Michael, up 11 percent.

ABC Family was the year’s number one cable net in Prime for the first time ever among W18-34, with its highest annual Prime rank on record in A18-34 and Viewers 12-34. The net’s Pretty Little Liars was the year’s number two cable series in F12-34, and ranked among basic cable TV’s top 5 scripted series in A18-34, W18-34, W18-49 and Viewers 12-34.

Sunday’s season three premiere of NatGeo’s Ultimate Survival Alaska scored .34 P25-54, up 6 percent over the season two launch, and 605,000 total viewers P2+, up 11 percent year-over-year.

For the third year in a row, Destination America logged year-over-year gains in Prime delivery among all key demos including HH (up 16 percent), P2+ (up 13 percent) and P/M/W25-54/18-49 and in Total Day delivery among HH, P2+ and P/W15-54/18-49. 2014 ranked as DA’s best year ever in Prime and Total Day among HH, P2+ and P/W25-54/18-49.

The Thursday premiere of UP original series Bringing Up Bates averaged .5 HH, .5 W25-54 and .4 W18-49 coverage rating with an average audience of 525,000 P2+, according Live+SD data from Nielsen, the strongest telecast ever for the net among W25-54 and W18-49; the show ranked number 16 and 20, respectively, in the demos in the time period among ad-supported cable nets.

Velocity earned double-digit ratings growth in primetime among key demos in 2014: up 33 percent in M18-34, up 38 percent in P18-34, up 18 percent in M25-54 and up 25 percent in P25-54 in primetime delivery versus 2013. Growth got a big assist from freshman series Bitchin’ Rides, the highest delivering series in net history.

American Heroes Channel had its best year ever in Prime delivery in all major demos including P2+ (220,000) and HH (181,000), as well as in Total Day among P2+ (148,000) and HH (128,000). The net has had 22 consecutive months of year-over-year Total Day delivery gains among P2+ and HH.

Dr. Who’s annual Christmas special delivered 2.3 million total viewers to BBC America, and was the top non-sports telecast on cable among A25-54 (1.3 million) in Live+3 in its time period. Peter Capaldi’s first season as the Doctor delivered BBC America its highest rated season ever with an average of 2.035 million total viewers in Live+3.
