IN THE NEWS

NBCUniversal and Charter averted a blackout by extending their December 31 deadline to reach a carriage agreement. NBCUni had earlier stated that due to Charter’s “unyielding demand for terms superior to those agreed to by the rest of the industry” Charter Spectrum might drop NBCUniversal’s cable channels and NBC-owned local stations, but said Saturday it would continue its efforts at the negotiating table. Charter is NBCUniversal’s third-largest distributor, with 17.3 million subscribers for Spectrum TV service.

Cox Media Group didn’t avert a blackout, but it was brief. After going dark on January 1, Cox reached a “long-term” retrans deal to keep its 13 stations on DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse. Hearst Television stations in 28 markets also went dark on DirecTV January 1; AT&T said they were working to resolve the matter “quickly and reasonably.”

Dick Clark Productions did not take kindly to Mariah Carey’s claim that technical issues on Saturday’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve live telecast were responsible for her inability to complete her song set; a spokesperson for Carey went so far as to tell Billboard magazine that producers “set her up to fail.” Fired back DCP in a statement, “As the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists. To suggest that DCP… would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd.”

Following the deaths of Carrie Fisher on December 27 and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, the day after, HBO moved up the TV debut of Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds to Saturday, January 7 at 8p. The HBO Documentary Films feature directed by Alexis Bloom and Fisher Stevens premiered at Cannes in May. “These women were more than mother and daughter,” said Bloom and Stevens, “they were an expression of exquisite humanity in all its travail and triumph.”

Carrie Fisher had completed two episodes of Fox’s Family Guy before her death. Fisher, who has guest starred as brewery supervisor Angela since 2005, died four days after suffering a massive heart attack on a flight to LA from the UK, where she was shooting an episode of Amazon comedy Catastrophe.

Show airs Sunday, January 7 on NBC.

Sam Champion exited The Weather Channel at the expiration of his three-year contract. The popular meteorologist left Good Morning America to take on the role of managing editor, as well as anchor of TWC’s AMHQ. That morning anchor job ended after 18 months of low ratings, at which point Champion pivoted to primetime projects. Now Champion “has decided to leave The Weather Channel … to pursue new challenges,” said the net. “We are grateful for his contributions and leadership in his time at the network, as Managing Editor, and both anchor and creator of AMHQ and the pioneering 23.5 Degrees. Sam was influential steering our business during a period a rapid change, and The Weather Channel is stronger today for it.”

After A&E canceled docu-series Escaping the KKK: A Documentary Series Exposing Hate in America in light of allegations that third party producers made cash payments to some participants to facilitate access, production company This Is Just a Test said that like A&E, it is investigating the matter, but is “proud of the program we made.” TIJAT also said it has “been told that participants in the series have received threats and coerced into speaking out against the authenticity of the show.” A&E had retitled the series, originally called Generation KKK and slated for a January 10 launch, after drawing criticism that the title normalized the hate group. “We will still seek to fight hate in America through on-air programming including town halls and documentary programs produced in partnership with civil rights organizations,” said A&E.

A coroner’s report revealed the cause of the sudden death of Garry Shandling on March 24 at age 66 was a blood clot in his heart. Shandling had called 911 a day after complaining of leg pain and shortness of breath, and collapsed while on the phone.

Two days after being named White House communications director in Donald Trump’s administration, Jason Miller backed out, saying on December 24 he needed to spend time with his family. “My wife and I are also excited about the arrival of our second daughter in January, and I need to put them in front of my career,” said Miller. Sean Spicer, named White House press secretary, will take over the responsibilities that were to have been Miller’s.

Actress and host Giselle Blondet is joining Univision’s Pequenos Gigantes USA (Little Giants USA). The talent competition for aspiring entertainers age 6-11 will premiere in February.

Fans of Freeform’s The Fosters can submit a video of themselves singing the show’s theme song, for a chance to be featured on-air during the January 31 winter premiere. For every entry received, Disney and Freeform will donate a book to a child in foster care. Submissions will be accepted at www.TheFostersTV.com through January 24.

2016 Cynopsis Salary Survey Findings

The only constant in today’s business world is change, and 82% of respondents say that education is essential to their company and should continue to be a priority in the future. For the “dollars and sense” of how you stack up against your peers, check out our special report, right here.

COMING UP

Former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson will guest host Today’s 9a hour this morning on NBC. Carlson, who received a reported $20 million settlement after filing a sexual harassment lawsuit against former FNC chief Roger Ailes, tweeted that she will be making “announcements.”

PBS’s American Experience will focus on Rachel Carson on Tuesday, January 24 at 8p (check local listings). Carson’s Silent Spring warned of the long-term dangers of pesticides, resulting in laws to protect the environment.

On Thursday, January 5, OWN will encore a 2011 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show featuring and interview with Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher, while Turner Classic Movies will celebrate Reynolds’ career with a 24-hour film tribute on Friday, January 27, launching at 6a with 1959’s It Started With a Kiss.

Heart to Heart Classics premieres Friday, January 6 on RFD-TV. The 30-minute conversation show with Stan Hitchcock airs at 2p, with encores Fridays at 6:30a.

LEGAL MATTERS

BET and Being Mary Jane star Gabrielle Union are starting the new year off on the right foot, having reached a settlement in Union’s breach of contract lawsuit. “BET Networks is pleased to announce that they have reached an amicable agreement with Gabrielle Union and look forward to sharing the new season of Being Mary Jane with its loyal fans beginning January 10, 2017,” said BET. In October, Union filed a lawsuit alleging the show reneged on a deal to have a break between 10-episode fourth and fifth seasons, rather than run them back to back.

Burke Ramsey, brother of JonBenet Ramsey, filed a $750 million lawsuit accusing CBS, production company Critical Content and consultants for docu-series The Case Of: JonBenet Ramsey for destroying his reputation. “The accusation that Burke Ramsey killed his sister was based on a compilation of lies, half-truths, manufactured information, and the intentional omission and avoidance of truthful information about the murder of JonBenet Ramsey,” says the lawsuit. The CBS series was one of several shows to revisit the unsolved case 20 years after the 6-year-old beauty queen’s murder.

BY THE NUMBERS

The number of homes that subscribe to cable or satellite for January dipped 1.7 percent versus the same period last year, according to Pivotal Research Group’s Brian Wieser, while the number of TV households grew 1.7 percent, to 118.4 million. Nets seeing drops versus last year included Esquire (-27.6 percent), Spike (-9.5 percent) and CMT (-6.9 percent). Among those on the upswing: Velocity (+7.8 percent), FXX (+7.3 percent), FX Movie Channel (+6.2 percent) and Sprout (+4.9 percent).

While cable news ratings soared during the election year, six non-news cable channels among the top 30 also showed total viewer primetime boosts in 2016. Nick Jr. rose 43 percent to 594,000, Hallmark was up 10 percent to 1.05 million, ID had a 9 percent lift, to 994,000, Bravo’s hike was 7 percent, to 908,000, HGTV grew 5 percent to 1.58 million, and TV Land increased 2 percent to 620,000. VH1 held steady at 639,000.

DIGITAL DATA

U.S. advertisers spent $17.6 billion on digital ads during 3Q16, according to a report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau, the highest 3Q digital spend yet and up 20 percent versus the same period last year. “The momentum of advertising in mobile, digital video, and other innovative formats is undeniable,” said David Doty, EVP and CMO, IAB. “These record-setting third quarter revenue figures reflect marketers’ trust in the internet’s power to connect with today’s audiences.”

If House Republicans have their way, members will be fined $500 for live broadcasting from the House floor, with subsequent offences costing $2500. The proposal comes after Democrats live streamed a “sit-in” protest on gun control on Facebook Live and Periscope last June, following House Speaker Paul Ryan’s move to have the C-SPAN live feed cut off. The changes “will help ensure that order and decorum are preserved in the House of Representatives so lawmakers can do the people’s work,” said a Ryan spokeswoman.

The season 6 premiere of Homeland is available early on Showtime on Demand and Showtime Anytime. Drama makes its linear debut Sunday, January 15 at 9p.

Netflix renewed spin-off Fuller House for a third season. The 13-episode sophomore season premiered December 9.

Hulu inked its first licensing agreement for theatrical features with The Walt Disney Studios. The multi-year deal grants the streaming service exclusive SVOD rights to movies including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mulan, Pocahontas, Hercules, Sister Act and Air Bud, as well as over 50 titles available to stream on Hulu for the first time.

DirecTV Now’s introductory offer of $35/month for over 100 channels expires January 9, at which point the service’s “Go Big” package will set viewers back $60. Current DirecTV Now customers, and those who sign up before the promotion ends, will stay at the special price of $35, “subject only to future reasonable programming price increases applicable to all packages,” said AT&T. DirecTV will continue to offer a $35 plan, but with fewer channels.

DISTRIBUTION

Maryland Public Television is joining stations in New York, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Charlotte to partner with Japan’s public English-language channel NHK World TV, to distribute live news and Japanese lifestyle programming produced in English.
