On Sunday, Evelyn Stevens (Specialized-lululemon) defended her title by powering up the Manayunk Wall at Sunday’s Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic. Canadian Lex Albrecht (Twenty16 Cycling) finished second while Lauren Hall (Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies) finished third. It appeared as though Albrecht left her charging surge a wee bit too late as she was quickly gaining ground on Stevens at the line. Nevertheless it was a strong performance by the Canadian.

In the men’s race, Kiel Reijen (UnitedHealthcare) defended his 2013 Philly Classic win. Reijen, who was racing on his birthday, won ahead of Jure Kocjan (SmartStop) and Dion Smith (Hincapie Sportswear Development). The men rode 10 laps of the 19.2-km circuit. The route was different from previous years, which finished on Benjamin Franklin Way and often featured a bunch sprint to the line. After the early move of the day was caught in the closing laps of the race, a countermove developed containing five riders including Canadian 5-hour Energy presented by Kenda rider Bruno Langlois. The move looked promising as the main field splintered into fragments. On the final lap, it appeared as though the countermove was to be caught. Langlois made an attack that looked as if it was a last ditch effort to win the day. He raised his arms in victory as he crested the Manayunk Wall thinking he’d won. Unfortunately, there was still a lap remaining and the main field, being led by UnitedHealthcare. Langlois and the remnants of the break were caught. This set up the finale for Reijen.
