A group of 300 cyclists taking turns on 100 bicycles broke the Guinness World Record for the most mechanical energy produced by pedalling on static bicycles in one hour in Dubai. With the enegry they produced they were also able to simultaneously light up another Guinness World Record holder, the Burj Khalifa which holds the title for the tallest structure in the world at 829.8 m.

The event was open to the public taking place in Burj Park Downtown Dubai to celebrate Innovation Week. The record attempt was organized by the government’s executive council in partnership with TechnoGym and the UAE Cycling Federation. The event was part of the Dubai Plan 2021 and the Good Move campaign aiming to promote active lifestyles for people in the region.

In 60 minutes the cyclist produced 8,999 Watthours of mechanical energy which comfortably surpasses the previous record of 8,369.8 Watthours which was achieved by Rave And Ride in Stoke Poges, U.K. in May.



The attempt was open to the public with 100 stationary bikes on hand along with members of the UAE cycling team. Each bike produced on average 89 W for one hour to contribute to the record-breaking effort. As the cyclists pedalled, a light display lit up the Burj Khalifa.

“What makes the UAE so resilient and has allowed it to achieve such accomplishments and growth over the past decade is the commitment to strive for the best,” said Al Shaibani, secretary general of The executive council of Dubai and member of the higher committee for UAE Innovation Week. “From the tallest building in the world that shows the nation’s infrastructure capabilities, to this new record for the most mechanical energy produced in one hour, generating 8,999 watts.”
