WHAT’S THE KEY TO REDUCING FUEL CONSUMPTION?

Stand 4G120

This year’s Commercial Vehicle Show will see Shell unveil the results of new independent research looking into the fuel management practices of more than 200 managers of UK-based road haulage operators. The report will be available from the euroShell card stand.

The Fuel Matters 2014 study will reveal the most common techniques used by road haulage managers to reduce fuel consumption as well as their opinion on the greatest opportunities to enhance savings. It will also highlight what they believe are the most significant barriers to improving fuel management practices and what needs to be done to address them.

Phil Williams, Head of Shell Commercial Fleet UK, said, “Fuel management is an important job for fleet managers as it contributes significantly to operating costs. Environmental credentials are also becoming an increasingly regular feature in customer tenders. Despite this, road haulage managers are telling us there’s little information on the topic readily available and they need help. We commissioned this market research to address this and we hope road haulage managers will find the results useful for tackling this important challenge.”

MICHELIN SOLUTIONS MAKES CV SHOW DEBUT

Stand 3B100

A unique solution that can help truck, bus and coach fleets radically reduce fuel consumption will make its debut at the CV Show.

EFFIFUEL by Michelin solutions – a new entity of the Michelin Group – brings together a range of fuel-saving levers to help companies reduce and contain their fuel consumption, managing it efficiently and meeting a fuel consumption target over periods of up to four years.

Paul Davey, Commercial Director of Michelin solutions in the UK and Ireland, explains, “This is an entirely new approach to understanding fuel efficiency and a novel concept in the commercial vehicle sector. The CV Show is the perfect opportunity to discuss it with some of the biggest fleets.”

As part of the offering, a team of dedicated fuel analysts from Michelin solutions, working with selected partners, accesses a broad range of levers including eco-driver training, fitment of on-board telematics and optimisation of tyre management to improve efficiency and profit margins.

“Our fuel analysts study data on the influences of fuel consumption, while also optimising tyre management through pence-per-kilometre pricing, combined with a fitment strategy aimed at improving fuel consumption. We’ll then define a contractual commitment based on projected fuel consumption savings and the resources needed to attain them. If the saving goal is met, the two companies share the gains. If it is not, Michelin solutions will reimburse a portion of the expenses incurred on a pro rata basis,” Paul continued.

IVECO’S DAKAR RALLY TRAKKER SWAPS BOLIVIA FOR BIRMINGHAM

Stand 4G10

One of the toughest trucks ever built, Iveco’s Dakar 2014-competing Trakker Evolution 3, will join a line-up of on and off-road Ivecos on the Italian manufacturer’s stand at the CV Show.

The Trakker Evolution 3 is expected to be one of this year’s hottest exhibits and will appear alongside an on/off-road Euro VI Trakker Hi-Land 8×4 tipper chassis on the 864m² Iveco stand. The 410hp production model benefits from extensive testing conducted by Iveco during the last three Dakar rallies, which it has used to confirm the robustness of its vehicles, putting each individual component under extreme stress.

Joining the two Trakkers will be an all-Euro-6 line-up of road-going trucks, including a Stralis Hi-Way and Stralis Hi-Road as well as the latest generation Eurocargo. These vehicles will each highlight FPT Industrial’s high-efficiency selective catalytic reduction system, called HI-eSCR, which offers multiple benefits including weight reduction, optimised fuel consumption and increased durability.

Also on show will be a high-spec Daily 3.5 tonne panel van, together with a stand-alone Cursor 11 engine, allowing visitors complete 360º access to see FPT Industrial’s new Euro-6 offering.

Iveco will run a Total Cost of Operation simulation across the three-day Show. This will enable bespoke calculations to be made for individual fleets, comparing the potential fuel-saving of Iveco’s Euro-6 tractor units against both a customer’s existing fleet and Euro-6 alternatives from other manufacturers.

CYCLE ALERT TO LAUNCH NEW OPERATIVE SAFETY PRODUCT AT CV SHOW

Following the success of its live trials with Trandev, and ahead of a planned nationwide roll-out of Cycle Alert, the company’s co-founder Peter Le Masurier will show his latest innovation in safety technology, Operative Alert, at the CV Show.

Operative Alert is a safety system that works in conjunction with Cycle Alert’s RFID technology and is designed to eliminate work-related hazards. It comprises three units: a tag fitted to the hard hat/lanyards/PPE of an operative, sensors fitted to the vehicle/machinery and a dashboard receiver. The three components communicate to notify a driver when an operative is in close proximity, and will also work in tandem with Cycle Alert, to recognise cyclists and reduce work-related road risk.

Operative Alert has already drawn the support of two of the leading names in the haulage industry – Keltbray and Eddie Stobart – and pilot schemes are already underway. Its recognition has been attributed to its congruency with the already successful Cycle Alert, its cost-effectiveness and being a scalable solution to achieving best practice safety standards.
