MICHELIN PLANS GLOBAL TRAILER TYRE PREVIEW AT CV SHOW
Stand 4F80
Michelin has selected the CV Show for an exclusive international preview of its new 385/65 R 22.5 X Multi T trailer tyre – to be officially launched this summer.
Michelin says the 385/65 X Multi T, designed for national and regional operations, will enable fleets to derive even greater value from their tyres. It will offer improvements in longevity, grip and rolling resistance over the current XTE3 trailer tyre of the same size, Michelin’s best-selling trailer fitment since its launch in 2007.
Sharn Samra, Head of Truck Marketing in the UK and Ireland, says, “Being able to display the new 385/65 X Multi T at the CV Show is a major coup as it’s the first time this tyre will have been exhibited anywhere in the world. It’s testament to the importance to Michelin of the UK and Irish markets.
“The 385/65 is the second most popular commercial vehicle tyre size sold domestically, accounting for 16% of the market. We see huge potential for the X Multi T. The XTE3 has been a strong performer for years, both as original equipment and replacements, but the X Multi T will be a game-changer in terms of trailer tyre performance.”
Michelin is placing huge importance on its attendance at this year’s Show – its first since 2011. The company will have a comprehensive display of 10 different tyres including examples of its popular X MultiWay 3D and fuel-saving X Line Energy ranges, as well as an example from the Michelin XML line-up; an all-round fitment for trucks operating both on and off-road, where good grip on all types of terrain is required.

WHEEL SECURITY ISSUES?
Stand 4D31
Disc-Lock Europe, European distributor of the award-winning Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut, urges transport operators to act before, not after, a wheel loss event.
The company’s wheel security expert, Bob Hope, will be on hand to discuss the common causes of wheel detachment from commercial vehicles and how they can be avoided.
Bob Hope, Chairman of Disc-Lock Europe, says, “I have worked for Disc-Lock Europe for 25 years and I am staggered that wheel separation continues to be such a huge issue, when you consider all that has been written and said about loose wheel nuts and wheel loss. Incredibly, I still continue to receive calls on a weekly basis from companies who have experienced wheel loss events. Indeed, many operators would be appalled at the state of some of the standard wheel nuts that turn up in my office.”
He continues, “There is no room for complacency where wheel loss issues are concerned. The potential causes of wheel detachment are many, but whatever the reason, my advice to operators and transport engineers is to act before, not after, the event takes place”.
The Disc-Lock Safety Wheel Nut is the world’s leading wheel retention product for HGVs, buses and coaches. It maintains wheels securely on their axles and complies with the specification for spigot mounted wheel systems. It is quick and easy to fit and remove and no more expensive than a standard wheel nut.

SMARTFLEX, HANKOOK’S NEW ALL-SEASON TRUCK TYRE RANGE
Stand 4G60
Hankook will showcase an all-new truck and bus tyre range, ‘Smartflex’, to satisfy the needs of fleet owners. Smartflex consists of three main sizes for steer and drive axle tyres, able to fit today’s demand for increased load capacities and to provide driving safety under changing weather conditions.
The Hankook Smartflex AH31 is a five-rib steer axle tyre for medium to long haul, available in sizes 295/80 R 22.5, 315/80 R 22.5 and 315/70 R 22.5. It is equipped with Hankook’s advanced Spiral Coil Technology, where an endlessly wound steel belt between the traditional high-tensile steel cord belts cares for significantly improved belt durability. The new technology effectively helps to increase both tyre life and load capacity. It also ensures a stabilised footprint shape for better steering and rolling characteristics. A ‘Tread Wear Equaliser Stepper’ (small support blocks) at the outside of ribs two and four effectively prevent one-side irregular wear.
The Hankook Smartflex DH31 is also available in sizes 295/80 R 22.5, 315/80 R 22.5 or 315/70 R 22.5. These are the corresponding drive axle tyres for medium- to long-haul purposes, providing a solid six-rib tread design with tread blocks in six-angle shape for improved grip, higher mileage and reduced irregular wear. Hankook’s patented self regenerating kerfs in the centre of each block prevent tearing at block edges, providing good traction throughout the tyre’s life.
Hankook Smartflex truck tyres will be available in the UK from the second quarter of 2014.

MERRIDALE CUSTOMERS CHOOSE VLINK PROXIMITY READERS
Stand 3B72
The latest depot fuelling points equipped with Merridale dispensing and stock control systems are employing proximity tag technology for vehicle authentication. In addition to individual vehicle tags, MIS Fuel Monitoring has taken the concept forward with the introduction of the Merridale vLink system for routine refuelling of fleet vehicles.
On these installations the ID tags are fixed to the vehicle, removing the admin associated with allocating and the safe keeping of vehicle keys. Routine transactions are authenticated by a sensor head at the fuelling point. The pump reader will also work with tags assigned either to temporary vehicles or general administrative requirements.
Fuelling is authorised by entering the vehicle mileage and, if required, an operator PIN onto the Merridale Auditor unit keyboard. Details of the transaction are then recorded automatically and uploaded to the Merridale Fuel Management software for analysis and reports.
Merridale will show a range of depot fuelling solutions at the CV Show and offer presentations on FuelWorks, its web-based fuel management service, as well as tank gauging and security upgrades for existing installations.

CHECKPOINT SAFETY OFFERS
Stand K62
Detachment of wheels from heavy commercial vehicles has been a cause of concern for many years. Detached wheels can just come to rest and cause little or no damage, but in the worst cases they can collide with other vehicles causing accidents and even fatalities.
Research from VOSA/TRL has indicated that a simple cost-effective solution is to fit wheel nut movement indicators and retainers to alert drivers and maintenance engineers.
Checkpoint Safety, supplier and inventor of the original wheel nut indicator, has championed safety and protection for over 25 years. At this year’s CV Show, the company is highlighting a new product called Checkthread, a toolkit that is designed to be used by service staff and engineers to monitor the quality of wheel studs and stud holes. The kits are easy to use and offer a clear way of highlighting problems and heighten the awareness of wheel security at an operating level.
Checkpoint will demonstrate the use of the kits that enable fleet managers to train their staff in detecting problems early and take remedial action. There will also be an opportunity to win Checkthread kits in a free-to-enter competition.

THE LATEST IN DIGITAL TACHOGRAPH TECHNOLOGY FROM TACHOSYS
Stand 4F01
At the CV Show, Tachosys will display its full range of tachograph download devices, claiming the fastest download speeds currently available.
The hot topic is remote tachograph download as this technology stands to save companies hundreds of man hours. Estimates suggest that between one and two man days per vehicle per year are spent collecting tachograph data, which is pure cost to the business. digiDL can offer a completely unattended solution.
Tachosys’ digiDL has been installed in many thousands of vehicles in the UK and Europe and has become the solution of choice. digiDL is already supported by all of the UK analysis bureaux with data sent directly from the vehicle to an online analysis system.
Tachosys will demonstrate the whole concept of remote download so that LGV operators can assess the benefits for themselves. It will also show the successful digipostpro which provides a depot based solution (GPRS or LAN) for centralised collection of all tachograph data, both driver cards and vehicle units.

TRUCKCOM INTRODUCES NEW CLOUD-BASED FLEET MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
Stand 4J71
Truckcom is launching a new version of its fleet management software based entirely in the Cloud, with no need for users to install any software on their own PCs or servers. Users just open a web page in their internet browser and they’re straight into the new system.
“When we first developed Truckcom, we didn’t feel that a Cloud-based system was capable of doing everything our customers needed,” says Hugh Wightwick, one of Truckcom’s founders. “But since then there’s been a lot of progress in Cloud technology and internet connection quality for our users is also improving steadily, so we feel the time is right to do this. Our new system is based on Microsoft Silverlight, which is a very powerful platform. It lets users do all the things Truckcom already did – fleet tracking, transport management, electronic POD, vehicle checks and much more – but all within the user’s browser.”
A big advantage of the new Cloud-based system is that it’s now very easy for Truckcom to offer 30-day free trials, leading to low pay-as-you-go online prices. To help promote this new approach, the company will offer a range of promotional discounts this spring, including a unique offer to visitors to its stand at the CV Show.

KNOW YOUR BULBS TO MAINTAIN YOUR HAULAGE LICENCE
Stand 5C118
According to VOSA, headlamp misalignment is the most common failure for HGVs during an MOT test, accounting for over 30% of the failure rates. While a bulb failure is not a significant fault, failure to take action is an issue and regular bulb failures or misalignments will adversely affect drivers’ Operator Compliance Risk Score.
VOSA found that changing the bulb could lower the headlamp aim by 3% without interfering with the adjustment mechanism. VOSA was also concerned about bulb construction, conformity of production to regulations and inferior products.
To address this situation, Ring will hold Commercial Vehicle Bulb Workshops at the CV Show. The workshops will equip fleet managers, transport managers and fleet engineers with knowledge of commercial vehicle bulbs and the possible cost savings by fitting the right sort.
There will be demonstrations on how superior filament technology can drastically improve beam alignment and how the bulb construction can differ, resulting in differences in vibration resistance. Using bulbs of superior build quality can provide substantial cost savings against vehicle downtime and maintenance costs. Overall running costs can be improved simply by switching to a better bulb.
The workshops will be held on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 April at the Show. Each session will last 30 minutes, running from 11:00-15:00, and include time for questions. Session must be pre-booked by e-mailing Craig O’Neil at craig.oneil@ringautomotive.co.uk.

DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE SALES WITH 3D MARKETING
Stand 4H95
3d Marketing announces the launch of its new marketing dataset the Vehicle Ownership Database. With around nine million records detailing the vehicles people drive in the UK, the company can now help with campaigns via post, phone or e-mail.
After a 12 month development period and the detailed merging of several sources of data, 3d says it has constructed the most accurate view of consumer automotive purchases available today. Knowing who owns which vehicle model and their lifestyle characteristics leads to an unprecedented number of ways to analyse and select the data.
Dealerships can easily target alternative models on the road or identify when their renewal is likely. Customers can choose from vehicles’ make/model, the vehicle’s purchase date, owner information, location, e-mail address and many more variables. Manufacturers and agencies are able to look at target demographics in relative areas and market accordingly. 3d is also able to produce penetration reports for manufacturers’ own models versus rival models.
Also launching at the CV Show will be 3d’s Fleet-Vision online analysis engine. This allows users to look at their available market and dedupe their own data for better targeting of prospects.
