Job Description:

TITLE: Communication Specialist – Writer

Office of Marketing Communications

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Senior Writer for the Office of Marketing Communications

GENERAL FUNCTION:

MCC’s Office of Marketing Communications seeks an enthusiastic, multi-talented writer. This position is part of a cohesive, professional team that supports the marketing and communications needs of the college. The Communications Specialist-Writer creates copy to disseminate across a wide range of platforms and media channels including the news media, social media, digital media, marketing materials, and the web. The Specialist works with the senior writer to ensure that copy is written and placed throughout print and online communications channels. The scope of the position occasionally requires working additional hours to complete jobs and to cover events, and an extensive amount of time working at a computer workstation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Develop, write and promote the college to a wide range of media

2. Respond to media inquiries

3. Responsible for integrating the university branding and messaging into college marketing and communication

4. Contribute news articles for internal outlets, including PROFILES magazine and the college’s online news room

5. Actively participate in social media by developing engaging content for the official college social media: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube Channel; Responding to social media inquiries (posts, direct messages) in a timely fashion; also engage media sources and key stakeholders via numerous social media resources

6. Write/edit copy for internal and external marketing materials

7. Write/edit promotional copy for print, radio, television, and the web to ensure consistent college message/brand

8. Solicit, receive and rewrite copy for college announcements and miscellaneous marketing materials

9. Manage multiple unplanned projects, as assigned by the director

10. Ability to work in a team environment, as this position works closely with creative staff to refine and integrate content that will support marketing, engagement and college themes and enhance the message.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s, or master’s degree, from an accredited institution in English, communications, mass communications or journalism or a related discipline.

2. Three years of writing/editing experience.

3. Demonstrated ability to write across multiple writing platforms including social media, print and digital media.

4. Superior writing and editing ability.

5. Experience writing for the web.

6. Familiarity with writing for social media communications – micro-scripting.

7. Experience in or strong interest in interviewing people and writing profiles about them.

8. Ability to thrive in a dynamic atmosphere and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.

9. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively across departments.

10. Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and experience working with diverse populations such as individuals of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.

11. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Powerpoint, Word, and Excel).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Experience writing for higher education, and for multiple target audiences.

Additional Information:

SALARY: Grade 4 ($39,900 – $57,800). Salary within this range is dependent upon experience in a closely related position. Anticipated starting salary is high $40’s.
