Having vacationed in Penang as a child, it was now time to visit Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city. Being such a multi-cultural place, I wanted to experience first hand its vibrant culture, food and heritage for myself. Here are my views on the city, and some fun facts about Kuala Lumpur things to know before you go:
The Local currency of Malaysia is Ringgits (RM).
Kuala Lumpur is known as KL for short.
Most public restrooms, even some in malls, don’t stock toilet paper. It’s always best to carry a pack of tissues with you.
Locals are social media savvy. If you want to brush up on your skills or find out the latest trending social channels and apps, start a conversation.

When using above-ground public transport, be aware that during peak hour traffic times, your journey will take at least an extra 30-60 minutes.
Kuala Lumpur is made up of three main ethnic groups, which are Malays, Indians and Chinese. This makes for a colorful city full of fantastic food & culture.
Not all taxi cabs are metered, so if you want to avoid the hassle of haggling for your fare, stick with blue taxi cabs as they are regulated and you can see the meter running. Trips within the city are so inexpensive, that pricing should not be a problem.
At Central Market are a few vendors that specialize in vintage collectors items. Really unique pieces that’s definitely worth a look.
When planning to visit the Petronas Twin Towers, book online in advance. The waiting line to get a ticket in person is frustrating and long, so save yourself the hassle. Trust me on this one.
Try the melting pot of cuisines at hawker stalls in the Golden Triangle District. Some local must-try faves include: BBQ chicken wings, Thai grilled pork skewers and crispy oyster omelets at Wong Ah Wah.
Support local designers & shops, as it’s the best souvenir you can buy.
With over 60 malls to satisfy for shopping needs, KLCC Suria Mall I found the best as it had a selection of everything. Take advantage of a good exchange rate if it’s in your favor.
The locals are kind, easy going and tourist friendly. They will let you take photos of anything.
