Maureen Paley is hosting until May 31 HEXENMEISTER, AA Bronson’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. One of the members of the art collective General Idea, founded in 1969 together with Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal, but also a curator, a healer and the founder of NY Art Book Fair and Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair, AA Bronson here presents his work Treehouse (2015), a kind of shamanic fortuneteller’s tent, with animal protectors and woven tapestries. The installation is shown together with works on the theme of magic and spirituality, including the lightbox Red (2011) – a collaboration with LA-based artist Ryan Brewer – and The Book of the Sacred Magic (2015), a found object with custom-designed bookplate blessed by AA Bronson in an Edwardian mahogany Bijouterie table. In the back room QUEER ZINES is an exhibition within the exhibition, featuring over 100 queer publications from the mid-seventies to today, many of which are available for reading. The gallery’s ground floor features works by General Idea, such as Mondo Cane Kama Sutra (9 figures) #2 (1984), which spins Stella-like abstraction into canine eroticism, and the original Black AIDS painting (1991), exhibited here for the first time.
