From her come a gang and run is the first solo show by Ingrid Olson at Document, Chicago. The exhibition displays a selection of works halfway between photography and sculpture; her Plexiglas, metal and brass boxes include photographs, drawings, photocopies and scraps of paper combined in collages and assemblages. Olson herself is often the subject of the photographs, which alternate between fixed portraits and performative snapshots; in her images she explores her body, distorting and masking it using mirrors, manipulating light and re-photographing printed pictures. The artist’s studio is another recurrent subject in her works, which reveal her creative process. Olson’s arrangements of images appear fluid and unnatural at the same time; they recur to a language similar to the Modernist cinematic montage. Among the works on show are Hand Over Head; Of a curve, feedback, and Waiting; No eternity, only recognition of self delay; and A scission and vulgar bodies (all works 2013).
In the current issue of CURA. you can find an unpublished project by Ingrid Olson in the LAB section.
