The Graduate Center (GC) is the principal doctorate-granting institution of the City University of New York (CUNY). Offering more than thirty doctoral degrees from Anthropology to Urban Education, and fostering globally significant research in a wide variety of centers and institutes, the GC provides academic training in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The Graduate Center is also integral to the intellectual and cultural vitality of New York City. Through its extensive public programs, The Graduate Center hosts a wide range of events - lectures, conferences, book discussions, art exhibits, concerts, and dance and theater that enrich and inform.

The Finance Manager is responsible for performing highly specialized accounting work required to maintain GC Related Entities general ledger. Working under the direction of the Director of Finance for Related Entities, the Finance Manger directs and coordinates daily accounting activities to quickly and accurately record the revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities of GC Related Entities. The incumbent is also responsible for preparing annual financial statements and coordinating GC Related Entities annual audits.

Duties include but are not limited to:

* Provides complexed financial analysis and technical assistance to the Director of Finance for Related Entities with daily accounting activities required to maintain GC Related Entities general ledger.

* Supervises, directs, and reviews the accounting functions (including, but not limited to, cash reconciliations, investment account reconciliation, accounts receivable transactions, fixed asset activity, GC Related Entities accounts payable transactions, recording of revenue and expenses, etc.);

* Resolves complex accounting issues or assists other personnel in resolving financial issues;

* Makes and implements recommendations to improve accounting processes and procedures;

* Prepares routine journal entries and monthly account bank reconciliations;

* Manages and tracks the performance of invested assets and ensures compliance with policies and investment guidelines;

* Produces quarterly and annual financial statements and ad hoc financial reports;

* Reviews for accuracy, completeness of documentation, and proper coding of all accounts payable transactions, including payments to vendors;

* Ensures that releases from restricted funds are properly executed and are consistent with the purpose of GC Foundation funds;

* Maintains charge-back database and prepares charge-back invoices; and maintains fixed asset schedules;

* Performs ongoing financial analysis, financial modeling, and reporting;

* Plays a major role in the annual audit; liaisons with auditors and other internal and external agencies as needed;

* Analyzes revenues and expenses to ensure they are recorded appropriately on a monthly basis in accordance with GAAP;

* Assists with analyzing financial statements on a monthly basis and reports on variances;

* Develop relationship with key managers by providing value added guidance to assist with financial reporting;

* Assists with preparing tax returns (990 & 990-T), IRS Form 1099, and other corporate filings;

* Assists in monitoring internal controls; and supervises staff; and

* Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

A preferred candidate should have:

* Bachelor's degree in Accounting; and six years accounting and/or finance experience.

* Experience in fund accounting, particularly non-profit experience.

* Strong understanding of accounting theory.

* Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB). Experience with non-profit accounting principles and procedures.

* Highly motivated self-starter with supervisory, review, and proofing experience.

* Ability to develop and establish financial policies and procedures.

* Ability to work independently, with little supervision, and as part of a team.

* Ability to effectively direct and supervise.

* Strong analytical and accounting skills.

* Intermediate to advanced experience with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

* Intermediate to advanced knowledge of major accounting software packages.

* Ability to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline driven environment.

* Ability to take on new tasks with high level of complexity.

* Advises management regarding funding appropriateness and proposes fiscal solutions to resolve academic and/or administrative issues

* Prepares and manages production of statistical/analytical reports pertinent to financial and operational activities

* May hire, supervise and train finance and/or clerical staff and manage related administrative functions
