Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty-four units within the dynamic City University New York (CUNY) System. Named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education.

Located in Central Brooklyn, MEC was established in 1970 with a mandate to meet the educational and social needs of the Central Brooklyn community, currently enrolling approximately 7,000 students in degree programs. Students represent 105 countries around the world. MEC students obtain Associate degrees in 8 fields, and Baccalaureate degrees in 18 fields. They are instructed by over 170 full-time dedicated faculty members who must maintain a portfolio of scholarship and research. To meet the needs of its students, the College offers courses and programs at various times, is growing their online program offerings, and in offsite locations. The College is committed to a student-centered education and advancing knowledge through scholarly research.

In recent years, the College has undergone tremendous growth in student enrollment and expansion in physical facilities. The college enrolls about seven thousand students including close to twenty-five hundred students in the School of Science, Health and Technology. Organized in five academic departments (Biology, Chemistry & Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science and Nursing), the school offers five B.S. degree programs in Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics and Nursing, two Associate degree programs one in AS in science and the other is AAS in Nursing and a certificate program in Practical Nursing. In 2010 the School moved to its own state-of-the-art, $247 million School of Science building with well-equipped smart classrooms and teaching labs, several research modules and two core research facilities with multi-million dollar high-end research equipment. In recent years the school has hired several research-active faculty in different contemporary STEM disciplines and intends to hire more to support our undergraduate student research internship training.

The School's major goals include among others increasing student enrollment, retention and graduation rates, securing accreditation for Nursing programs, hiring additional research-active faculty, securing more research grants, increasing faculty research publications, establishing new degree programs particularly in health-related areas, establishing additional partnerships with other institutions, creating internship opportunities for students and diversifying course offerings.

The School's mission is to provide a strong foundation in the sciences for career-oriented undergraduate students by creating an academic environment that encourages innovation in teaching, learning and research in order to fully engage and deepen the student experience. The Dean is responsible for the school's general academic and administrative management including supervision of Department Chairs, faculty recruitment, tenure and promotion; maintenance of content and quality of the school's academic programs; development of school's long-range planning and implementation of short-range plans; allocation of budgets among departments of the school; curriculum, faculty, resource and program development; review of departments' course schedules; conduct faculty pre-tenure review; oversee school's core research facilities and implementation of the college affirmative action policies. Reporting to the Senior Vice President/Provost and the President of the college, the Dean will promote high quality teaching and academic programs as well as grant funded research and service-related activities.

Responsibilities of the Dean include:

* Providing visionary and strategic leadership for the School of Science, Health and Technology

* Supporting high quality teaching, faculty research, and creative and professional activities

* Fostering academic planning and innovative curricular and scholarly development.

* Encouraging research grants, expanded advancement effort, and public/private partnerships

* Ensuring effective management of financial resources including budget planning and management

* Supporting faculty recruitment, review, and development

* Supporting the College's efforts to educate the healthcare workforce to ensure state-of-the-art skills

* Enhancing the School and College profile, resource streams, and engagement with alumni and the community

* Provide leadership and vision to develop new programs and to strengthen and implement a variety of new programs and services using technology and mediated delivery

* Support faculty in their innovations in using technology

* Supporting the College's commitment to diversity and fostering, academic, and non-academic activities to increase the school's visibility within CUNY and the community and to enhance MEC efforts to prepare a culturally diverse health professionals in partnership with the local health care community.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

The successful candidate must possess an earned Ph.D. degree from a regionally-accredited institution in a discipline represented in the school, has credentials for appointment to a full professor rank, has a demonstrated record of distinction in college teaching and engagement in research, a successful record of extramural funding, and experience in higher educational leadership, including, significant experience in the role of department chair and (or) dean or equivalent. The school is particularly interested in candidates with vision, creativity and a strong sense of advocacy on behalf of the school; strong leadership skills with capability of both nurturing and of making tough decisions, has capacity to cultivate excellence in teaching, funded research and encourage innovative program growth, proven ability to manage fiscal and physical resources, a track record of working with a diverse group of faculty, student, and administrators, as well as with school partners and broader scientific community, superior communication and organizational skills, and a personal and professional commitment to equal opportunity and affirmative action plan.
