The Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving reports to the Vice President of College Development/Chief Operating Officer of Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) Foundation and collaborates with the Vice President and the Director of Development to structure and grow major gifts and planned giving programs at BMCC.

BMCC has grown from 17,000 to over 25,000 students in ten years and is located in the heart of downtown Manhattan. With offices in the recently reopened Fiterman Hall, the development office at BMCC is growing and requires a professional who can structure and expand major gifts and planned giving functions while serving as a leader of the development team. The selected candidate will research, identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major and planned gifts from alumni, faculty and friends of the school to support scholarships as well as other programs and initiatives. S/he will work with campus and volunteer leaders to strategically align the needs of BMCC with the interests and resources of donors. S/he will be responsible for a portfolio of prospects and develop strategies to secure gifts. S/he will collaborate with the development team to develop programs that engage and motivate major donors including using naming opportunities within the College. S/he will work to expand the means by which large gifts can be secured, including developing mechanisms for deferred gifts and managing and enhancing the Legacy Society to encourage engagement and giving. The Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving will also play a prominent role in the planning and implementation of comprehensive fundraising campaigns.

Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

* Development of a three-year plan for the growth of the major gift and planned giving programs including collaboration with annual giving and alumni staff to create a pipeline of major gift and planned giving prospects, donor renewals and stewardship, data collection and organization, and plans for supporting board growth and major gifts outreach.

* Establish and achieve benchmarks for growth and reaching milestones against our goals and fundraising plans. This person will be the leader who drives the execution of the major gifts and planned giving plan in coordination with the development team.

* Work with Board members to identify, cultivate, qualify, and solicit major gift prospects and provide stewardship in recognition of their philanthropy.

* Learn and convey in compelling terms the strategic vision for BMCC and the power of scholarship. Equip and inspire our volunteer leaders with the knowledge and language they need to be ambassadors for BMCC.

* Organize our prospect management structure with a 'moves management' system that prioritizes action and moves prospects sequentially forward through cultivation, asks, and stewardship, giving our benefactors a sense of satisfaction, validity and the desire to keep giving.

* Working with resources in CUNY, develop a menu for planned giving that enables us to work with donors and expand their gifts through deferred giving programs. Acquire knowledge of gift planning strategies and vehicles with a growing understanding of tax and trust laws applicable to the basic estate planning fundamentals.

* Be a leader of our office staff, building a sense of collegiality and a sense of coordinated functions both within and beyond the development office.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will be an accomplished development professional with a proven track record of successful interactions with individuals including cultivating and soliciting major donors. S/he will have a minimum of 5 years of fundraising leadership experience, including direct gift ask experience and an understanding of planned giving. Experience in an institution of higher education, or an environment of similar complexity, is preferred. S/he must demonstrate exceptional abilities in communications (writing and public speaking), interpersonal and organizational skills as well as superb fundraising judgment in all areas related to frontline major gift fundraising.
The selected candidate will have the ability to take initiative, lead others in the development office, think strategically, and collaborate with others for productive outcomes. In addition, the successful candidate must have exceptional interpersonal capabilities in order to partner seamlessly with BMCC leadership, staff, and high-level volunteers in order to meet increasing fundraising goals. Bachelor's degree required with knowledge of Raiser's Edge and Excel preferred. S/he will have the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with attention to accuracy and detail. Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with an appreciation for the importance of complete protection of the privacy of donors and prospects.
