GENERAL DUTIES

Develops and implements programming, services, and learning opportunities for students, promoting the personal development of a diverse student population.

* Administers one or more student affairs programs, providing program management, assistance with policy development, supervision and training of all professional and support staff, budget monitoring, and report preparation

* Serves as a resource to student groups and/or populations as a consultant and advocate for their concerns

* Researches and stays current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student impact

* Produces workshops and materials support student programs; manages on-line communities; develops on-line social networking activities, and develops and maintains multimedia content on program web sites

The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, founded in 2006, has quickly become nationally recognized for its excellence. The only publicly supported graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism. As the profession rapidly reinvents itself for the digital age, the CUNY J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the tools to find stories and tell them effectively - using print, broadcast, visual, interactive, and social media. The school offers three master's degree programs: a Master of Arts in Journalism, the nation's first M.A. in Entrepreneurial Journalism, and the nation's first M.A. in Social Journalism.

The Assistant Director of Student Affairs in the Office of Academic Affairs is responsible for the planning and management of major events and administrative duties, such as commencement, incoming-student orientation, mentoring, degree audits, student and faculty-advisor handbooks, and other tasks assigned by the Associate Dean and Director of Student Affairs.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Affairs, the Assistant Director of Student Affairs will be responsible for:

* Overseeing commencement activities.

* Coordinating incoming-student orientation and international-student orientation with the Admissions Office and others.

* Creating an internal directory of incoming students.

* Overseeing professional mentoring for students of diversity, along with the Career Services Director, and diversity mentoring for CUNY journalism undergrads.

* Handling of certain aspects of course scheduling, as well as add/drops, change of grades, withdrawals.

* Managing work-study students and college assistants in the Student Affairs Office.

* Overseeing federal work-study placements and timesheet submissions.

* Acting as liaison to CUNY Graduate Center.

* Creating, distributing, collecting, and disseminating of course evaluations.

* Creating and tracking of a peer mentoring program.

* Organizing and promoting student events.

* Serving as an advisor to the Student Graduate Council.

* Updating the student and faculty-advisor handbooks each year.

* Conducting degree audits each semester.

* Distributing diplomas and managing exit interviews.

* Creating, distributing, and collecting exit/experience surveys for graduating students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

A preferred candidate should have:

* Master's degree preferred with at least four years of relevant experience, preferably in an urban higher education setting

* Excellent communication, writing, and analytic skills

* Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with multiple priorities and deadlines

* Demonstrated ability to adapt to meet students' needs

* Demonstrated strong critical thinking, problem solving, and organizational skills

* Demonstrated ability to present ideas and information to small and large groups that includes students, parents, faculty and administrators

* Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint) and student information management systems such as PeopleSoft/Oracle and Filemaker

* Ability to work on evenings and weekends, when needed

COMPENSATION

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
