FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Modern Language Department at Bronx Community College invites applications for two tenure-track positions in Spanish at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August 2017.

Bronx Community College is among the nation's top ten colleges in minority enrollment. Our student body reflects the diversity of the Bronx; we serve approximately 11,000 students from 100 countries. We are a diverse faculty that values pedagogical inquiry and dedication to teaching. Located on a 45-acre tree-lined campus, Bronx Community College was recently designated a National Historic Landmark — the very first community college to enjoy this honor. The campus was cited as a nationally significant example of Beaux-Arts and Modernist architecture in the United States, containing seminal works by Stanford White and Marcel Breuer.

The Modern Language Department currently offers a Liberal Arts Degree with a Spanish concentration. The program offers language courses from the introductory to the advanced levels as well as interdisciplinary thematic advanced courses in Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian literature and culture. The Department offers courses in five languages: Arabic, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. Current initiatives include e-Portfolio integration, learning communities, hybrid courses, Open Educational Resources (OER), and the introduction of less commonly taught languages (LCTLs).

Scholarly growth and involvement in department and college initiatives are required. Perform teaching and research in area(s) of expertise. Share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative and other functions as may be assigned. The position entails teaching classes in Spanish across a wide range of undergraduate levels, conducting research leading to publication, designing or updating undergraduate courses, providing curriculum material, constructing syllabi, mentoring students, and serving on faculty and student-oriented committees. Other areas of responsibility include grant writing, assessment, faculty development, and academic advisement. The position will offer the opportunity to develop new courses and initiatives.
