The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy seeks to provide a collaborative and accessible environment for excellence in education, research, and service in public health, to promote and sustain healthier populations in NYC and around the world, and to shape policy and practice in public health for all. The School offers a range of innovative master's and doctoral degree programs and is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.

The CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute applies the expertise of CUNY faculty in public health, nutrition, sociology, urban planning, law and other disciplines to developing research, education and action that can contribute to solving urban food problems in New York City and in cities around the world. It develops partnerships with researchers, public officials, and non-profit organizations in New York City and other parts of the nation and world to conduct research that enables New York City to share lessons and evidence on food policy with other cities. The Institute aims to convene faculty throughout the University and work with other CUNY institutes to develop CUNY's capacity to build interdisciplinary research teams that can contribute to the growing global interest in better understanding the interactions among food policy, urbanization, economic and community development, sustainability and resilience and health. The Institute is based at the new CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy, but serves the entire University.

Reporting to the Institute Director, the Deputy Director will supervise Institute staff and student research fellows, support faculty fellows, assist in Institute administration and fund raising, and participate as a member of the Institute's Leadership Team. The Deputy Director will engage in strategic planning for the Institute, coordinate services for faculty and students, cultivate internal and external partnerships to identify needs and opportunities, and assist in the design and implementation of new Institute activities. This position is funded for up to three (3) years with the possibility of an extension.

Duties include but are not limited to:

* Supervises Institute staff and assists them in carrying out all center activities;

* Manages project and funding timelines, keeps track of required deliverables, and works with staff and faculty to complete projects on time;

* Manages the Institute budget, as well as supplemental grants, and prepares reports for funders; monitors budget for fiscal integrity and deadlines to avoid project cost overruns;

* Recruits, hires, trains and supervises student fellows, ensuring that they receive appropriate mentoring and research supervision from Institute senior faculty;

* Serves as a member of the Institute Ladership Team in strategic planning, fundraising, and resource development;

* Represents the Institute in partnerships with other CUNY units and external organizations;

* Manages Institute communication within CUNY and with external stakeholders and constituents; and

* Follows urban food policy trends, opportunities, obstacles in New York City, and in cities nationally and globally.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and eight years' relevant experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

A preferred candidate should have:

* Master's degree in nutrition, public health, public policy, urban planning, food studies, or related field and at least six years' relevant experience.

* Three (3 ) years of experience working in low-income urban communities on food, health, public policy or related fields.

* Demonstrated commitment and passion for reducing inequalities in access to healthy food.

* Extensive knowledge of current issues in food policy, food justice, and/or community development.

* Experience in applying for and/or managing grants.

* Experience interacting with public officials in policy settings.

* Track record of receiving external funding for non-profit organizations.

* Proven ability to work independently.

* Organizational, analytical, financial and interpretative skills.

* Excellent written and oral communication skills.

* Fluency with information technology, including social media and web communication, and familiarity working with and building online and virtual communities.

* Demonstrated ability to work under changing priorities and to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

* Ability to work collaboratively and constructively with students, faculty, staff, policy makers and community leaders and residents.

* Ability to communicate in Spanish preferred.

* Ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends.
