The City University of New York's Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) boasts the success of the University's rich past and the determination to become a national leader in visionary scientific research in the future. With a focus in the fields of Nanoscience, Photonics, Structural Biology, Neuroscience, and Environmental Sciences, the ASRC operates as a nucleus of a University-wide science enterprise. The Deputy Executive Director will be a key member of the ASRC leadership team and a thought partner to the Executive Director of the ASRC. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Deputy Executive Director will work in concert with the five Initiative Directors in seeking cross-disciplinary collaborations internally as well as with external parties. The Deputy Executive Director will help to execute the strategic goals of the ASRC and will present the vision and work done by the ASRC to internal and external groups. She/he will also act as the lead in creating, developing, and pursuing external funding opportunities for interdisciplinary research. As a key member of the ASRC leadership team, the Deputy Executive Director will oversee the work of several direct reports and share responsibility for enhancing the internal organization and infrastructure necessary for continued success and growth of the ASRC. Furthermore, in the Executive Director's absence, the Deputy Executive Director will represent the ASRC on the Executive Director's behalf.

The Deputy Executive Director will also:

* Assist the Executive Director with setting of strategic direction for the ASRC, working closely with the Directors of the five research Initiatives;

* Envision new endeavors for the ASRC and lead efforts to develop new funding opportunities for the ASRC as a whole, including partnerships with peer institutions;

* Develop a clear understanding of the research mission and accomplishments of each of the five Initiatives of the ASRC in order to present these achievements to external parties;

* Liaise with research compliance staff on all ASRC compliance issues;

* Lead collaborative, interdisciplinary external funding opportunities in concert with ASRC and affiliated faculty;

* Be expected to create and maintain relationships with funding agencies and other institutional bodies as needed, including travel to these entities for in person relationship building;

* Perform related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

The ideal candidate will also possess the following knowledge, skills and professional competencies:

* A Ph.D. in science or technical discipline closely related with the ASRC's five initiatives is strongly preferred.

* Excellent leadership and project management skills with ability to foster teamwork transcending discipline and organizational boundaries.

* Exceptional managerial, technical, analytical, and evaluative skills in a system office or in a higher education institution.

* Strong communication skills with the ability to write, speak, and present effectively to a wide variety of audiences including executives.

* Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills, with the ability to use sound judgment to make decisions and resolve problems diplomatically.

* Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to plan and successfully execute multiple assignments with conflicting priorities and concurrent deadlines in a dynamic environment.

* Ability to forge collaborative relationships with peers and to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders at various organizational levels.
