FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Lehman College of the City University of New York is currently seeking an artist with an active exhibition record who is producing work in some area of technology-based media art, which might encompass many formats, for a position as Assistant Professor on tenure track.

We are searching for an artist that might work with a wide range of digital based art projects. Candidates working in emerging disciplines such as AR and VR are encouraged to apply. Digital media has grown to include immersive environments, installation, physical computing, wearable technology, animation, interactive media, design, games, mobile media, desktop interactive works, websites and internet art, time-based pieces, robotics, biological and DNA art, and networked activities. Alternative areas of specialization may include other integrated media intersections between art, media, and technology. In addition, we are interested in artists that are exploring or researching new areas of digital humanities.

The position entails teaching undergraduate and graduate studio and seminar classes at all levels, from introductory to advanced; curriculum development; and committee service to the Department and University. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the vision, development, and growth of the Digital Media Area. The candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to teaching, the potential for academic leadership, and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary arts environment. Candidates should also have an expansive knowledge and proficiency in the techniques, practices, histories and theories of media art as well as the field of art and technology. This position encourages an emphasis on innovation and experimentation in the production of challenging content in all modes of media art practice, methods of presentation, and forms of dissemination. Performs teaching, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise. Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

The Lehman College Art Department’s mission is to offer Bronx, regional students and students new to New York City the unique opportunity to study quality academic art and art history programing where both traditional studio and digital art practice share common goals for the development of creative thinking and innovative problem solving. Historical and analytical skills are emphasized, broadening a student’s cultural literacy while helping prepare them for advanced study.

Through a wide range of degrees and concentrations at both undergraduate and graduate levels, students interested in art education, fine art, and digital media production build a strong foundation to advance their careers while studying in New York City, one of the world’s most important cultural centers.

The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is the only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The college serves mainly undergraduate students preparing them for employment, the professions and further study. The teaching load is 21 hours (7 courses) per year and although the college is predominantly teaching focused, faculty at Lehman are active in research, scholarship and creative works. Service to the college, university and community is part of the mission as is a clear commitment to student engagement including advisement. Teaching is reduced for junior faculty over the first five years for scholarly development and all faculty are actively encouraged to seek external funding. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship support.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should have an MFA in Art or equivalent degree, on commencement of the appointment. They should have college level teaching experience, preferably at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

A working knowledge of the Adobe Suite of software is required. Other programming or scripting languages are a plus. The candidate should have demonstrable skills in some or all of the following areas: interactive projects, mobile app production, animation, website design, 3d modeling, (Cinema 4d, Maya) video production, immersive imaging etc.

COMPENSATION

Salaries are commensurate with education and experience.
