Danny Gaudreault, performing at VIVA! Art Action Thursday, Oct. 8

Well hello, art enthusiasts—we’re back with a fresh edition of Art this week after a short hiatus. There’s a ton of stuff going on this week so let’s get straight to it. First off, we’re now in the final days of Montreal’s biennial exploration of photography, Le Mois de la Photo, which ends on Oct. 11, so if you haven’t have a chance yet to check out the exhibitions, now is the time. You can take advantage of guided tours at three major exhibition sites, at Parisian Laundry (3550 St-Antoine W., $8) Wed–Fri at 5:30 p.m. or Sat–Sun at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., at Complexe de Gaspé (5445 de Gaspé, free)  Wed. at 2:45 p.m. and at the Belgo Building (372 Ste-Catherine W., free) Thurs. at 2:45 p.m. In other Mois de la Photo news, there will be a festive soirée Thursday, Oct. 8 at event headquarters Parisian Laundry with cocktails, snacks, tunes by DJ Donald Lauture, and a chance to win a new camera. (3550 St-Antoine, 8 p.m., $10/$5 students)

Today, Wednesday marks the first day of Viva! Art Action, a biennial event focussed on ephemeral, action-based arts including performances and interventions (and nightly suppers), running to Oct. 10 at Les Ateliers Jean-Brilliant. Check out tonight’s opening event featuring performances by Doyon/Demers, Sandra Johnstone and Soufia Bensaïd (661 Rose-de Lima, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 6 p.m., free)

If outdoors is more your things, check out the area around Place des Arts for Common Space, a series of eight open-air artworks that play with our relationship with technology, including sound sculptures, projections and interactive multimedia installations, running until Oct. 18. Various sites around Place des Arts, check the map here.

Work by Heidi Taillefer at the Society for Art of Imagination

Fans of visionary and surrealist art will want to head to the Village’s Écomusée du fier monde tonight, Wednesday, for the vernissage of a large group show organized by the Canadian branch of the Society for Art of Imagination, which includes works by the late H. R. Giger (who won an Oscar for his famous Alien of the film series of the same name), plus Alex Grey, Miguel Tio, Laurie Lipton and locals Jean Pronovost, Chris Dyer, Heidi Taillefer and more. 2050 Amherst, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 5–11 p.m.

You might also head to the Old Port Wednesday to check out the feminine, photorealistic portraits by painter Johanne Cullen at Galerie d’Art LOFT. 8 St-Paul E., Wednesday, Oct. 7, 6 p.m.

On Thursday, head to Artgang for the opening of two shows, What Goes Around Comes Around by New York graff artist and typographist Greg Lamarche AKA SPone, as well as Mémoires, a retrospective of photography by El Salvadorean artist José Enrique Montes Hernandez, whose body of work includes capturing graffiti and street art movements around the world, as well as a stint as the official photographer of Montreal rock god Jean Leloup. 6524 St-Hubert, Thursday, Oct. 8, 5 p.m.

On Friday head to 820Plaza for their inaugural exhibition, the group show Unsafe at Any Speed, a title borrowed from Ralph Nader’s 1963 exposé of the auto industry, which features works from Jon Rafman, Ivana Basic, Valérie Blass, Matt Goerzen and more. 6820 Marconi, Friday, Oct. 9, 7–10 p.m.

Also Friday, Divan Orange hosts a 5à7 to launch their October exhibition of works by Sophie Wilkins and Anik Favreau. 4234 St-Laurent, Friday, Oct. 9, 5–7 p.m.

Another graffiti-centric show goes down in Hochelaga on Saturday, at art supply shop Le Sino’s group exhibition Letter is the Limit, featuring 14 graff writers from Montreal, Toronto, Quebec City and Sherbrooke featuring black and white lettering-based works on paper from artists like Naimo, Pask, Koal, LYF3R and Sirus. 2817 Ontario E., Saturday, Oct. 10, 7 p.m.

You can always count on the Belgo for a good place to spend a Saturday, and this week is no exception with two new shows opening, including Stay Golden by New York based Anishinaabe artist  Maria Hupfield at Galerie Hugues Charbonneau (#308). The show features a variety of gold-coloured sculptures as well as the felt canoe she created for Jiimaan, a performance work staged in Venice earlier this year. Then head upstairs to Galerie Trois Points (#520) for BF4E, a series of wall-mounted sculptures by Mathieu Lévesque that draw a line between the disciplines of sculpture and painting. 372 Ste-Catherine W., Saturday, Oct. 10, 3–5 p.m.
