It’s September, friends—can you feel that energy buzzing through the air? Time to shake off those lazy days of summer, set your alarms and get cracking on new semesters, new jobs, new projects and new ideas. The shorter evenings and nip in the air (ok, I made that last part up) also signals a new season for Montreal’s art institutions, which makes for a VERY full week ahead. Let’s have a look at what’s in store, shall we?
First though, a little introduction to those of you who are new in town: Montreal is a famously artsy city, something that surely motivated you to to come here in the first place. Everything you’ve heard about us is true, and then some. Go on and explore the galleries and artist-run centres, big and small, that you see listed here and check back each week for a rundown of what’s going down all across town. Have a glass of wine at a vernissage or two each week. If you’re artistically inclined, consider going in on a shared studio space in one of Montreal’s many collective ateliers. Sign up for screen-printing and coding workshops and visit our art hives and makerspaces. Ride your bike to loft parties. Keep yourself informed and engaged in social issues. Give back as much as you take. You’ll be just fine.
Right, so back to the art program you came here for. Like I said, this is a huge week with over 50 vernissages and events, so be sure to check the full listings at the bottom. Here are a few highlights of particular note.
Work by Christina Battle at SKOL
This September marks the biennial event Le Mois de la Photo, with this year’s (14th) edition organized along the theme The Post-Photographic Condition. Some 15 galleries around town will be exhibiting works by local and international artists throughout the month, and several special events are planned including guided tours, artist talks, workshops and more. The programming kicks off with a public vernissage at event headquarters Parisian Laundry on Thursday, followed by two days of exhibition openings on Friday and Saturday. Public vernissage at Parisian Laundry, 3550 St-Antoine W., Thursday, Sept. 10, 6:30 p.m. For full details of Le Mois de la Photo, check the official website here.
Also Thursday will be a vernissage for the annual Momenta Photography Exhibit, a group show that doubles as a fundraiser for women’s shelter Chez Doris. The exhibition runs for four days only at E. K. Voland Art Gallery. 4710 St-Ambroise, #100, Thursday, Sept. 10, 6–9 p.m.
Work by Turf One at Galerie Yves Laroche
Little Italy pop art gallery Yves Laroche Galerie d’Art opens the new show Troïka on Thursday, featuring work from Jean Labourdette (Turf One), Shawn Barber and Mike Davis, in conjunction with this weekend’s Art Tattoo Show at Place Bonaventure. Check out this month’s issue of Juxtapoz for a feature on graffiti writer-turned fine artist Turf One and his work that will be on display at Yves Laroche during this show. 6355 St-Laurent, Thursday, Sept. 10, 5–10 p.m.
Though not an official part of Le Mois de la Photo, the exhibit opening at Galerie Division on Thursday of photographs by Toronto-based artist Scott McFarland fits neatly into the month’s theme of post-photography, with McFarland using an array of post-production techniques like layering many frames together to build composite images that travel through time. 2020 William, Thursday, Sept. 10, 6–8 p.m.
Work by Scott McFarland at Galerie Division
Work by Laurent Lamarche at Art Mûr
Over at Art Mûr, three new exhibitions are opening Thursday, including Lesser Gods, a series of busts of homeless persons given the classical nobleman treatment by Bevan Ramsay, a Planet of the Apes-esque collection of dystopian futuristic figures by sculptor Brandon Vickerd titled Monuments of a Perfect Future, and HORS-LAB, in which artist Laurent Lamarche creates unusual, immersive works informed by science, by reflecting and refracting light through a variety of transparent, synthetic materials. 5826 St-Hubert, Thursday, Sept. 10, 5–7 p.m.
Work by Brennan Kelly at Jacuzzi Club
Moving on to Friday, check out new St-Henri underground art space Jacuzzi Club at a vernissage for Brennan Kelly’s solo show The Gray Scum That Rises. 538 Rose de Lima, Friday, Sept. 11, 7–11 p.m.
A Mois de la Photo exhibition opens Friday at the McCord Museum, titled After Faceb00k: In Loving Memory <3, looking at the phenomena of living on in your Facebook profile even after death, as well as a more general examination of the impacts of the rise in social media on photography. 690 Sherbrooke W., Friday, Sept. 11, 5 p.m.
Berlin-based artist Sean Snyder takes a look past the image itself and into its position as a vehicle for communicating a particular meaning or agenda (ie, a tool of propaganda) in his Mois de la Photo show at Concordia’s Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, paying special attention to the mechanisms of storage, reproduction and dissemination. 1400 de Maisonneuve W., Friday, Sept. 11, 4 p.m. vernissage with an artist talk at 5 p.m.
At Galerie de l’UQAM, the photo exhibition Another Life by Melbourne-based artist Patricia Piccinini, opening Friday, imagines a world of not just post-photography, but post-humanity where a new species of hybrid monster-like animal takes on the task of protecting the world’s endangered species, which may very well include humans in the not-too-distant future. 1400 Berri, #J-R 120, Friday, Sept. 11, guided tour at 12:45 p.m., vernissage at 7 p.m.
Work by Tchug at Fresh Paint
Graffiti heads will want to check out Fresh Paint 256 on Friday for the vernissage of Axe and Tchug’s show Mecha Graff Part 2. 256 Ste-Catherine E., Friday, Sept. 11, 5–10 p.m.
Top off your Friday with a Nocturne at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC), where you can take one last look at the Jon Rafman and David Altmejd exhibitions in a party atmosphere including DJs, cocktails and snacks to your hearts content until the wee hours. 185 Ste-Catherine W., Friday, Sept. 11, 5 p.m.–2 a.m., $13/$10 students, free for MACarte holders.
Work by Paul Wong at Galerie Joyce Yahouda
Still with me? Alright let’s have a look at Saturday. You can’t go wrong by visiting the Belgo Building for the afternoon; you’ll find several vernissages going on, including (but not limited to) photography from Benoit Aquin, Alain Paiement, Jonathan Plante and Chloe Lum & Yannick Desranlau of Séripop at Galerie Hugues Charbonneau (#308), multimedia artist Paul Wong compiling multitudes of photographs into video streams and GIFs at Joyce Yahouda Gallery (#516), Liam Maloney presenting Texting Syria at Galerie B-312 (#403), Christina Battle showing abstract video works created from images of the aftermath of natural disasters at Centre des Arts actuels Skol (#314) and Melanie Hoff presenting visualizations of lightning strikes burned into wood at Visual Voice Art Gallery (#421). 372 Ste-Catherine W., Saturday, Sept. 12, 2–6 p.m.
Work by Melanie Hoff at Visual Voice Gallery
From there, stop by OBORO for a double vernissage for Somewhere Else by Anishnaabe performance artist, sculptor and Governor General award winner Rebecca Belmore, plus Tiburón, a look at the great white shark by Anne Ashton, an event that will also serve as the launch for issue #85 of Montreal based visual arts magazine esse arts + opinions. 4001 Berri, #301, Saturday, Sept. 12, 5 p.m.
Work by Leandro Berra at Atelier Circulaire
Finally, spend your evening in the Mile End with a cluster of shows opening in and around Complexe de Gaspé, including Autoportraits robots by Leandro Berra at Atelier Circulaire (#105), I Never Play Basketball Now by Eva Taulois at Diagonale (#110) and a project to create visual storyboards for dreams using keyword image searches called Memories Center by Grégory Catonsky and Dominique Sirois at Centre CLARK (#114). 5445–5455 de Gaspé, Saturday, Sat. 12, 6–10 p.m.
If you’ve got any energy left on Sunday, you can take in an afternoon artist talk at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in conjunction with Le Mois de la Photo called The New Predators, in which Mois de la Photo curator Joan Fontcuberta chats with artists Joachim Schmid and Isabelle Le Minh about the practice of using existing images as building blocks from which to create new works. 1380 Sherbrooke W., Sunday, Sept. 13, 1:30 p.m., $10/$8 students and museum VIP members.
You can also take part in two street art walking tours through the Plateau and Mile End areas, organized by If Walls Could Talk Montreal. One follows St-Laurent and the other, St-Denis. Check out the tours’ facebook page for more information.
The shows mentioned above are just a small taste of what’s going on this week, so be sure to have a look at the full listings below and enjoy exploring Montreal’s art scene this week!
