Work by David Altmejd at MAC
The flurry of activity surrounding last week’s street-art smorgasbord Mural Festival may be over, but we now have 20 new public outdoor murals to admire all year long, so if you haven’t taken a walkthrough of the Mural zone yet, take some time to visit the completed works.
There are also plenty of new shows and special events taking place this week, including a couple of big new exhibits opening at the MAC with prominent Montreal-born artists David Altmejd and 2015 Sobey Art Award longlisted Jon Rafman.
Back to that in a moment. If you’re looking for something to do tonight, Wednesday, you can see the stellar Horst: Photographer of Style exhibit at the McCord Museum (690 Sherbrooke W.)for free after 5 p.m. tonight, and the museum will also be screening a documentary about the artist at 6 p.m.
‘Sarah Altmejd’ by David Altmejd at MAC
Thursday is a jam-packed day with a half-dozen vernissages across town, but the big ticket for the night is a chance to see David Altmejd speak about his work at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC). His retrospective exhibition, Flux, doesn’t officially open until Saturday, but the Montreal-born, New York-based sculptor will be giving an artist talk a few days ahead of the opening. Altmejd is known for monumental, architectural sculptures that incorporate anthropomorphic and biological elements in strange and fantastical arrangements. You might recall seeing his work, La spectre et la main at the MAC in 2012—of giant, room-filling sculpture of magical zebras flying through a plexiglass grid, flanked by coconut shells. Trust me, you will not want to sleep on this show. Artist talk Thursday, June 18, 6 p.m., 185 Ste-Catherine W. $10 or free for MACarte holders. Exhibition opens June 20.
Mural Fest piece by MC Baldassari
Also Thursday, catch up with some of the artists who participated in Mural Fest with a one-night show called Electric Relaxation at Espace Infopresse, put on by MTL ZOO, A’shop and eVox featuring works by MC Baldassari, Lacey & Layla, Bryan Beyung, Scaner, Zek, Dré, Five8 and many more. The show will serve as a fundraiser for La Fondation Canadienne des Femmes. 4310 St-Laurent, Thursday, June 18, 7 p.m.–midnight
Thursday evening also sees notable vernissages taking place at Visual Voice Art Gallery (372 Ste-Catherine W., #421), Galerie Youn (5226 St-Laurent), Darling Foundry (745 Ottawa) and Arsenal Montreal (2020 William).
Work by Lieven de Boeck at Darling Foundry
On Friday, Belgian artist Lieven De Boeck will give a tour of his new show at Darling Foundry, Let Us Be Us, Again and Again, and Always. The two major installations of this show involve extracting elements from the flags of the world and re-creating them from different forms based on the chosen element (namely, shapes and colours). 745 Ottawa, Friday, June 19, 1 p.m.
Work by Natalia Krioutchkova at BBAM! Gallery
Later on Friday, head to BBAM! Gallery to see Girl With an Attitude, a series of paintings by Russian artist Natalia Krioutchkova. 3255 St-Jacques, Friday, June 19, 7 p.m.
On Saturday, head to Articule for their annual garage sale fundraiser, Rotation! Rotation!, which this year will include a party in the adjacent alleyway with a full day of arts programming, BBQs and other fun stuff like screen-printing, interactive costume-making, pinatas and mini-putt. 262 Fairmount W., Saturday–Sunday, June 20–21, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Garage sale all weekend and special programming Saturday only.
There are also a couple of shows opening in the Belgo on Saturday including atGalerie Hugues Charbonneau (#308) and Galerie Donald Browne (#528). 372 Ste-Catherine W., Saturday, June 20, 3–7 p.m.
