Regional tradition on Christmas time
Christmas is very important in Italy. It is a very rich time of the year when it comes to traditions, covering the period from December to January. Santa Claus is accompanied by Santa Lucia (on December the 13th) especially in Northern Italy and the Befana (a traditional old lady) who brings presents and sweets on January the 6th.
Among the many traditions there is the “Ceppo di Natale”, that is the Christmas log. In the pasti t was burnt and its ashes were left in the corners and on the window sill to keep bad luck and problems away. Todays, it became a delicious dessert in the region of Liguria.
Also in Campania, there is a tradition linked to desserts. In Naples, when the traditional struffoli are fried, you should keep windows closed to avoid the bad luck from envious neighbours who could smell them and make them pop!
In Molise on Christmas Eve the ‘Ndocciata di Agnone takes place, when the people wear traditional clothes and bonfires are lit in the darkest street while waiting for Christmas day.
In Umbria, a region which is very linked to Saint Francis, the tradition of the nativity scene is very strong, both in miniature and in full size.
Today there are also many Christmas markets all over the country attracting both Italians and tourists to discover local craftsmanship and Christmas concerts which make the cities merrier.
Merry Christmas everyone!
