Budget will be helpful in socio-economic-educational empowerment of Minorities: Naqvi:

The Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has said, that the Union Budget 2017-18 will be helpful in socio-economic-educational empowerment of Minorities.
Mr. Naqvi said, that the Budget of Minority Affairs Ministry has seen an increase of about 9.6 per cent. The Minister said, there has been an increased by 368 crore rupees to 4,195 crore rupees for 2017-18. He said, the central government's focus is on educational and skill development of Minorities.

Govt proposes railway line in Arunachal at 9,000 feet:

In order to provide better connectivity, the Centre has proposed a railway link connecting Bhalukpong to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh at an elevation of 9,000 feet – one of the highest in India. It also proposed two more railway lines to Bamey and Pasighat in the state. The proposed railway lines are expected to cost between Rs.50,000-Rs.70,000 crore.

Health Ministry launches Measles Rubella vaccination campaign

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Faggan Singh Kulaste launched this initiative at a function in Bengaluru, Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kulaste stated that the centre is committed to eradicating Measles and Rubella from the country.
He said, this will be taken up in a mission mode and rolled out in partnership with States and NGOs. The Minister urged parents, caregivers, community leaders, teachers, anganwaadi workers and other frontline health workers to become the active part of this campaign.

Assembly elections: Goa registers record 83% voter turnout; 78.6% polling in Punjab

Punjab and Goa went to polls yesterday while Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur to go to polls later. Goa registered a record voter turnout of 83 percent in yesterday's polling for the 40-member Legislative Assembly. The state had recorded 81.8 percent polling in last assembly elections. Polling passed off peacefully in the state. The final figures may change as reports are yet to come from some polling booths.

Govt agencies make well coordinated effort to remove oil spill in Chennai: TN CM

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam has said, the Central and State government agencies have made a well coordinated effort to remove the oil spill in Ennore and Chennai. Sasikala to take over as Tamil Nadu CM on Feb. 9:

AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala was elected as the Leader of the Legislature party by the MLAs in the party head office in Chennai paving the way for her swearing in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Ms. Sasikala will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 9th February 2017. The development came exactly two months after Jayalalithaa's death. Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam proposed her name in the MLAs' meeting and she was unanimously elected as the Legislature party leader. Mr. Panneerselvam said he would soon hand over the resignation to the Governor. Ms. Sasikala was elected as the party's general secretary in December last year following the death of Jayalalithaa. If she is sworn in as Chief Minister, Ms. Sasikala needs to get elected to the Assembly within six months.

Sweden pledges to cut all greenhouse gas emissions by 2045

Sweden's deputy Prime Minister Isabella Lövin signed a climate bill aimed at cutting all greenhouse gas emissions in the country by 2045. Lövin said Sweden wanted to set an example at a time when ''climate sceptics are really gaining power in the world again''. She further said she feels encouraged by China's and India's pledges taken for Paris Agreement commitments.

US revokes suspended visas, takes steps to implement court order

The Department of State today revoked the suspension of nearly 60,000 visas after a US judge temporarily blocked President Donald Trump's controversial executive order last week banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering America.
The State Department said the provisional revocation of visas under Trump's executive order has been reversed, and individuals with visas affected the executive action may now travel if the visa remains otherwise valid, the State Department said

Syria: 51 militants killed by Turkish forces

In Syria, atleast fifty-one militants have been killed by Turkish forces as part of its ongoing operation in the northern Al-Bab and Bzagah regions. In a statement, Turkish military yesterday said, it destroyed fifty six buildings and three command control centers of Islamic State in the regions.

RBI should cut rates by 75 bps: Assocham

Industry body Assocham has said that Reserve Bank of India should cut interest rate by 0(point)5-0(point)75 per cent in view of dismal credit growth as well as subdued demand. As the RBI Monetary Policy Committee meets on February 7-8 for next bi-monthly credit policy, Assocham has impressed upon the central bank and the Finance Ministry to ensure adequate transmission of cuts in the interest rates.

India opens coal-mining market for first time in 40 years

India will allow non-state mining companies to mine and sell coal for the first time in more than four decades, coal secretary Susheel Kumar has said. The Coal Ministry will auction four mines to both state-run and private companies in April. The winning bidders will be allowed to sell the coal, which can currently be done by few state-run companies.

Global rating agencies are several steps behind from reality: Economic Affairs Secy

The statement comes after global rating agencies failed to upgrade India's sovereign rating despite significant improvement in macroeconomic parameters. India was last upgraded by rating agencies almost a decade back. Fitch upgraded India's sovereign rating to BBB in 2006 while Standard & Poor's in 2007. Mr Das said, one can compare the reform measures which India has undertaken with the track record of reforms in any other country in the last 2.5 years.

Personal income tax base must be before corporate tax cut: Revenue Secretary

Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said that a reduction in corporate tax is a challenge and cannot be done unless there is an increase in share of personal income tax. Speaking at a post-Budget interaction held by FICCI in New Delhi, Mr Adhia said, the biggest challenge is to increase the share of the personal income tax in the total kitty which is abysmally low. He also said, the profile of personal income tax payments does not match with the consumption profile.

Alibaba-made app helps find 611 missing Chinese children

A mobile app developed by Alibaba helped Chinese authorities recover 611 missing children last year. The 'Tuanyuan' app, which means 'reunion' in Chinese, sends push notifications with photos and descriptions to users who are close to the location of a child's disappearance. The notifications are sent to users farther from the location of the disappearance till the child is found.

New data transfer record created in Quantum computing

US-based scientists have set a new record of data transfer via superdense coding, a process by which the properties of particles like photons, protons, and electrons are used to store information. While computers transmit information in the form of bits (1 or 0), quantum bits can employ two states simultaneously and therefore represent more information than a traditional bit.

US-based scientists have built a biomimetic tree that mimics the branches and leaves of a cottonwood tree and generates electricity when its artificial leaves sway in the wind. NASA captures a star's death in 'rotten egg' nebula

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured a rare photograph of a dying star, transforming from a red giant to a planetary nebula and ejecting outer layers of gas and dust at almost 10 lakh kmph. The 'Rotten Egg' Nebula is called so because it contains sulphur, an element which smells like rotten eggs when combined with other elements..

World's smallest pacemaker unveiled

The world's smallest pacemaker, which is about as big as a large vitamin capsule and provides the most advanced pacing technology, has been successfully implanted for the first time in a patient in the US. Scientists said, the pacemaker is for patients with bradycardia, a condition characterised by a slow heart rate, usually fewer than 60 beats per minute. The Micra Transcatheter Pacing System, recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, is a new type of heart device that provides patients with the most advanced pacing technology at one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker and is the only leadless pacemaker approved for use in the US.

England Test captain Alastair Cook has been honoured with Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE). T20 World Cup for Blind: India continues their winning streak; defeat Sri Lanka by 9 wickets

India is continuing with their winning streak in the T20 World Cup for Blind. In Ahmedabad today, they defeated Sri Lanka by nine wickets at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium. Put in to bat, Sri Lanka scored 186 for eight in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, Prakash J put on a brilliant unbeaten 99 to steer the home team to victory in just 13.3 overs.
