TN Govt announces Rs.5k short-term aid to 30k fishermen on Oil spill in sea :



Tamil Nadu government on Friday announced an interim relief of ₹5,000 each to 30,000 fishermen families whose livelihood was affected due to the recent oil spill. The relief was announced due to the delay in getting suitable compensation from insurance companies, an official release said. Notably, the oil spill was caused after two cargo ships collided near Ennore port.

India's first mountain biking path opened in Darjeeling :



A hill station cycle path, believed to be the first in India, recently opened in Darjeeling. The 20-kilometre mountain biking path runs through the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary to reach Chatakpur, a small eco-village resort. It costs ₹70 to access the trail, which remains open between 6 am and 6 pm.

Assam to get 9 Passport Seva Kendras around the state :

Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh has announced nine new Passport Seva Kendras would be set up in the state of Assam soon. The new PSKs will be set up at Dibrugarh, Silchar, Tezpur, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, Nagaon and Diphu. The centres will be manned by staff of MEA and Postal department with technical support from TCS.

'Adiyogi'  112-foot tall Shiva statue revealed at Isha Foundation in Coimbatore :

PM Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled a 112-foot tall Lord Shiva statue in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on the occasion of Mahashivratri. According to reports, the statue, dedicated to Shiva's Adiyogi form, has been funded by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev's Isha Foundation. Meanwhile, tribal associations claim that the construction of the statue was not approved by the Hill Area Conservation Authority.

Proposal of TN on increase of workdays under MGNREGA to 150 days got approval from  Centre :

The Centre has accorded permission for increasing the number of workdays under the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee scheme in Tamil Nadu from the existing 100 days to 150 days. A release from the state government in Chennai says the rise in workdays is aimed at helping rural labourers, who are staring at job loss, as the state is affected by severe drought.

In Tamil Nadu, the rural job scheme is being implemented in 12,524 villages. This financial year, 33.43 man-days of employment have been generated so far under the scheme and Rs 4655 crore has been disbursed.

Sylhet city of Bangladesh to get Financial assistance from India on its development :

India has agreed to provide financial assistance to Bangladesh for sustainable development of Sylhet, a north-eastern Bangladeshi city. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Bangladesh's Economic Relations Division Additional Secretary Shah Md.

Aminul Haque and Sylhet City Corporation CEO Enamul Habib in Sylhet yesterday. Under the MoU three development projects will be taken up in Sylhet.

Under Antyodaya Anna Yojana canteens to be opened in Haryana :

Haryana Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board will open canteens under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana to provide food at affordable prices to construction workers and poor people. They will be provided food at heavily subsidised rates, breakfast for 5 rupees and full-coarse meal for 10 rupees per person right at their work place. The mobile vans will be deployed to make food available to the poor at labour chowks. This decision was taken at a meeting of the Labour Department held in Chandigarh yesterday.

Liker & Leh Dosmochey festival celebration starts today in Ladakh :

In Ladakh Region of Jammu and Kashmir, the annual centuries old two-day long Liker and Leh Dosmochey festival has begun from today. Dosmochey is the major festival in the Ladakh region during the winter season. Mask dances with different monastic religious musical instruments are the main features of the Dosmochey celebration.

People in large number have turned up at Leh as well as Liker village to witness the Dosmochey celebrations. Our Leh correspondent reports that Leh Dosmochey, which used to be known as the king of Ladakh’s annual festival, is now organized by the villagers of Leh town.

New Zealand  approves Sign Language as a official language :

New Zealand Sign Language is an official language in New Zealand, after English and Maori. The language, which has special status under the law, can also be used in legal proceedings with the help of interpreters. Notably, New Zealand declared sign language as an official language in April 2006.

Exports of India's steel marked 8.89 lakh tonnes in January :

India's steel exports registered a three-fold increase to 8(point)89 lakh tonnes in January this year, compared to the year-ago month. The massive jump in exports comes amid government providing extensive support to the domestic steel industry by way of various trade remedial measures including anti-dumping.

According to Joint Plant Committee data, the country shipped out 58.65 lakh tonnes in the first 10 months of the ongoing fiscal, registering an increase of 71 per cent. It said, export in January, 2017 was up 224 per cent over January 2016 and was up by 19 per cent over December 2016.

DIPP reports FDI inflow increase 18 % to $46 billion in 2016:

Foreign direct investment in the country grew 18 per cent in 2016, to 46 billion dollars, according to data released by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion.

The sectors which attracted the highest foreign inflows include services, telecom, trading, computer hardware and software, and automobiles. The bulk of FDI came in from Singapore, Mauritius, the Netherlands and Japan.

India -Israel made deal of Rs.17,000-crore on jointly develop a missile MR-SAM :

The Indian government has cleared a ₹17,000-crore deal with Israel to jointly develop a medium-range surface-to-air missile (MR-SAM) for the Army. The MR-SAM, a land-based version of the long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) for the navy, will have a strike range of up to 70 km. The deal envisages 40 firing units and around 200 missiles.

T R Zeliang Former CM of Nagaland appointed as Finance Advisor to state govt :

Former Nagaland Chief Minister T R Zeliang was today appointed as Finance Advisor to the state government in the rank of a cabinet minister. An official release said, Zeliang, appointed by the Governor P B Acharya, will receive the pay and allowances admissible to a cabinet minister.

He will be entitled for other facilities also received by such ranks. Zeliang resigned from the chief ministership on February 19 following the demand of the Joint Coordination Committee and Nagaland Tribal Action Committee for his decision to hold elections to urban bodies with 33 per cent reservation for women and subsequent incident.

Ball boys to be replaced by Shelter dogs in Brazil Open 2017 :

For the second straight year, the Brazil Open tennis tournament will deploy shelter dogs instead of ball boys to fetch balls along the net line during the warmups on the semifinal and final days of the tournament. Six dogs, coming from two Sao Paulo shelters, will be used to fetch balls and will be available for adoption.

Shooting World Cup  : Bronze medal won by Pooja Ghatkar of India

India's Pooja Ghatkar won bronze in the women's 10-metre air rifle on the opening day of the International Shooting Sports Federation World Cup at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Ranges in Delhi on Friday. The 28-year-old, gold medallist in the Asian Airgun Championship 2014, opened India's account in the tournament and claimed her maiden World Cup medal.

John-John Dohmen, Naomi Van announced as best hockey players of 2016 in men and Women category :

Belgium's John-John Dohmen and Netherlands' Naomi Van were named as male and female Hockey Federation's Player of the Year award.

In an event hosted in Chandigarh today, the Olympic silver medallists Dohmen and Naomi were handed these awards. Great Britain's Olympic gold medallist Maddie Hinch won the Hockey Stars 2016 female Goalkeeper of the Year award.

While, Ireland's David Harte was crowned the best in the world for the second year in a row as he received the male Goalkeeper of the Year award. Belgium's Arthur Van Doren was named male Rising Star of the Year. Maria Granatto from Argentina picked up the female Rising Star of the Year.
