International Day of Women and Girls in Science - February 11th

11 February was declared  by the UN as “International Day of Women and Girls in Science”.

This event is a collective effort by several UN agencies including UNESCO, UN-Women, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to recognize the importance of women and girls in scientific communities and to promote their full and equal participation in all aspects of science education and scientific careers.

iOS version of BHIM payments app launched :

After launching the Android version of the mobile payments app BHIM in December 2016, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) today released the application on iOS devices. The app has a limit of Rs. 10,000 per transaction and Rs. 20,000 in a day for transfers through a bank account. Features of the app include Pay to Aadhaar number and SPAM report.

Women voters of UP gratitude with red roses by EC officials :

In a bid to appreciate women electorate casting their vote, the Election Commission has asked its officials to give a red rose to all female voters in Uttar Pradesh's Baraut city. Notably, polling started in 73 Assembly constituencies across 15 districts of the state on Saturday. The results of the seven-phase election will be declared on March 11.

AAD Interceptor missile successfully test-fired by India :

India on Saturday successfully test-fired its interceptor missile from Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast, taking a step towards developing a two-layered Ballistic Missile Defence system. "PDV mission is for engaging the targets in the exo-atmosphere region at an altitude above 50 km of earth's atmosphere," officials said. The target mimicked a hostile Ballistic Missile fired from over 2,000 km.

1st phase polling of UP Assembly elections 2017 starts :

Voting for first of its seven phases began today in Uttar Pradesh as 73 of its 403 assembly seats went to polls. Around 6,000 paramilitary personnel are being deployed in all the 887 polling centres in Muzaffarnagar and neighbouring Shamli, the areas which had witnessed communal riots in 2013. The second phase of polling will be held on February 15.

Chinese soldier crossed border 1962 war to visit back China after 50 yrs :

Wang Qi, a Chinese Prisoner of War who was caught for entering the Indian territory after the Sino-India war, would be visiting China after five decades. Wang (77) later settled in India, got married and raised a family in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district. He couldn't visit China earlier as he didn't get permission from the Indian government, his family said.

Chhattisgarh asks schools to observe 'Matru Pitru Diwas' day on Feb 14

February 14 will be celebrated as parents' day at all schools in Chhattisgarh to teach "Indian culture" to students, the BJP government said on Friday. The Directorate Public Education issued a notice to principals of all schools to observe 'Matru Pitru Diwas' on the Valentine's Day. Congress, however, described it as an attempt to impose 'Hindutva' ideology on the state.

First-ever comprehensive Braille atlas released today :

The Centre has released India's first-ever comprehensive Braille atlas for the visually challenged people, especially students. It has 20 maps on different themes like physical, socio-economic, river system, crops pattern, natural vegetation, cultural, roads and railways. Notably, the atlas was made using indigenously developed silk-screen painting technology.

Sudarsan Pattnaik creates record of  world's tallest sand castle :

Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has set a Guinness World Record by building the world's tallest sand castle, which stood 48 feet and 8 inches tall. Pattnaik broke the previous record of 45 feet and 10 inches, which was created at Miami beach, US in 2005. Pattnaik and 45 of his students took about 9 days to build the castle.

From 2018 Common entrance exam for engineering :

All India Council for Technical Education will conduct a single exam for engineering and architecture from 2018. At present, many states conduct their own engineering examination or admissions are done on the basis of Class 12 marks. Further, students seeking admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will have to clear the JEE-Advanced after taking the engineering entrance exam.

International Coin fair to be held at Thiruvananthapuram :

More than 2,500 coins from around 500 regions, including the coins belonging to the times of empires and princely states, will be on display at the three day international Coin fair at Thiruvananthapuram. The fair will begin from February 13. The coins on display will include those from the time of Alexander the Great, to various Mughal, Chera, Chola emperors and Kanishka, besides Persian, Roman and Islamic coins. According to sources, the exhibition will also feature collections of Justin Gilbert Lopez, who holds a Guinness world record for the largest coin collection.

2nd edition of 'Hunar Haat' starts today in New Delhi :

Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today inaugurated the second edition of 'Hunar Haat' to encourage, promote and provide national and international market to master artisans and craftsmen belonging to minority communities. The theme is 'Crafts Aur Cuisine Ka Sangam'. The Haat will remain remain open till 26th of this month in New Delhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Naqvi said, the Hunar Haat is unique in the sense that it is showcassing crafts and traditional cuisines brought from different parts of the country.

2nd Gateway of India Geo economic Dialogue to be hosted by MEA :

The External Affairs Ministry, MEA is co-hosting the Second Gateway of India Geo economic Dialogue with Gateway House from Monday in Mumbai, Maharashtra. This is India’s premier geo-economics conference on the theme, 'Where Geopolitics meets Business' focussed on building synergies between business and foreign policy. There will be panel discussions covering topics like Sovereign Funds, Global Taxation and Digital Economy.

11th Aero India 2017 to be held at Yelahanka in Bengaluru :

The 11th biennial edition of International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition - Aero India 2017 - will be held at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka in Bengaluru from Tuesday. 72 aircraft, beside 270 Indian and 279 foreign companies will participate in the 5-day event. Exhibitors from US, Russia, Israel, Germany, Singapore, UAE, South Korea and Australia will participate.

Aerobatic teams participating in the show will be the Indian Air Force Sarang Team, the Indian Air Force Surya Kiran Team, the Scandinavian Air Show Team from Sweden and the Evolvkos Aerobatic Team from UK.

Wild sanctuary to grow Muga cocoon by Assam government :

The Assam government will raise a wild sanctuary to grow Muga cocoon. Participating in an AIR talk show tonight, Assam Handloom and Sericulture minister Ranjit Dutta said that several steps are being taken to give more exposure to Muga, Eri and silk products. He said that 25 lakh trees will be planted to get Eri and Muga cocoons.

The Minister said that state government has set up Assam Silk Outreach Mission to promote products made of Muga, silk and Eri.

Mission-Eleven-Million programme launched by Sports Minister , AIFF  :

Sports Minister Vijay Goel and All India Foot ball Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel today launched Mission-Eleven-Million, the biggest school sports outreach programme at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. They also unveiled Mascot Kheleo for Under 17 football world cup 2017.

The Mission XI aims to instill the passion for football in 11 million children from every part of the country.

Indian-origin astronaut Shawna Pandya denies on her news about NASA space mission:

Shawna Pandya, an Indian-origin astronaut in Canada, has denied news reports claiming NASA had shortlisted her for its 2018 space mission. Pandya further clarified that she was neither a neurosurgeon nor an opera singer, adding that she wasn't affiliated with the Canadian Space Agency or NASA. Earlier, it was widely reported she would become the third Indian-origin woman in space.

Peugeot bought Ambassador car brand for Rs. 80 crore

Kolkata-based automaker Hindustan Motors on Friday sold the iconic Ambassador car brand to French car manufacturer Peugeot in a deal worth Rs. 80 crore. Hindustan Motors began manufacturing the Ambassador car in 1958, which was also used by several Prime Ministers. The production of the car stopped nearly three years ago in May 2014.

Ambassadorial role given to Diego Maradona by FIFA :

Former Argentine player Diego Maradona has been given an ambassadorial role by football governing body FIFA. Making the announcement on Facebook, Maradona wrote he can "finally fulfil one of his dreams, to work for a clean and transparent FIFA, with people who love football." A FIFA spokesperson said the body was looking for the "best way to collaborate" with Maradona.

Ajay Tyagi becomes as new SEBI Chairman :

The government on Friday appointed senior IAS officer Ajay Tyagi as the Chairman of markets regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Tyagi will replace UK Sinha, whose extended tenure ends on March 1, 2017. Tyagi is currently Additional Secretary (Investment) in the Department of Economic Affairs and handles capital markets, among other responsibilities.

Official mascot of FIFA U-17 World Cup  'Kheleo' released :

FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017 organisers on Friday unveiled a clouded leopard called 'Kheleo' as the tournament's official mascot, to be held in India from October 6 to October 28. The unveiling ceremony was attended by Sports Minister Vijay Goel along with AIFF chief Praful Patel. Notably, India will be hosting a FIFA tournament for the first time.
