World's 1st electronic mode postal ballots to be implemented in Goa

Goa will become the first state in India and across the globe to opt for electronic transmission of postal ballot to service voters in the upcoming elections, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said. The voters can download the ballot, fill it and send it via email. Notably, Goa has 822 service voters working in defence, paramilitary or diplomatic missions.

On 120th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, nation pays homage :

Nation pays homage to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on his 120th birth anniversary today. It was on this day in 1897, Netaji was born in Cuttack, Odisha. A number of functions have been organised in different parts of the country to mark the occasion. In Delhi, floral Tributes will be paid to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in the Central Hall of Parliament.

In Andaman Nicobar Islands, the Subash Mela Committee of Havelock is organising Subash Mela at Krishna Nagar Havelock from today. A Variety of Cultural Programmes including Sports and games will also be organised during the mela.

Stamp cover on Indian Olympic performers Sindhu, Sakshi and Dipa released by India Post releases

The Indian postal department released a special stamp cover featuring Olympic medalists PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik, and gymnast Dipa Karmakar, in Agartala on Saturday. The special cover is titled "Golden girls of India - Pride of Nation". One of the images on the cover also features Dipa's coach Bishweshwar Nandi, who was awarded the Dronacharya award.

Tribal students of karnataka to get stipend from state govt :

The Karnataka government has decided to give a stipend to students belonging to two tribal communities, Koraga and Jenu Kuruba, until they get a job. The initiative is aimed at encouraging the people of these communities to pursue education. The population of both these communities is also declining, said Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya.

Kolkata's Eden Gardens to have names of Indian war heroes in stands :

Kolkata's Eden Gardens will become the first Indian stadium to have stands named after war heroes, after Cricket Association of Bengal President Sourav Ganguly announced that two stands will be dedicated to soldiers. The Army, which owns the land on which the stadium is located, is yet to finalise the names, which will be unveiled before the next international match.

Republic Day parade : 40 tribals all over the country to attend as special guests :

Forty tribal guests from different parts of the country have been invited by the government to witness this year's Republic Day parade on the Rajpath in New Delhi. They will get to watch the Republic Day parade and the Beating Retreat ceremony. Further, they will also meet President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Body-worn cameras has been given to  Gurugram Police for better patrolling

The Gurugram Police has been given body-worn cameras, which will be attached to a policeman's uniform, for better patrolling. Violators behave properly with cops because the recordings can be used as evidence of unruly activities, said an officer. The cameras, imported from the United Kingdom, are encrypted and it is not possible to delete or overwrite footage.

Karnataka state highways get planted with saplings by state govt :

The Karnataka government is set to initiate a plantation drive along its state highways in accordance with Centre's National Green Highways mission. 1% of the cost of highway development projects has been reserved for planting of saplings, said an official. The initiative will help reduce the impact of air pollution and prevent the glare from headlights of vehicles, he added.

75 more WiFi hotspots got installed in Mumbai , which makes the count to 585:

Days after Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis activated 510 WiFi hotspots in Mumbai, the state government has activated 75 more hotspots to achieve its target of 1,200 hotspots by May 1. The government has started placing signboards at WiFi locations to help people identify them. Earlier, Fadnavis had announced that Mumbai WiFi is the largest public WiFi service in the country.

Railway station accident victim will get paid around ‎Rs.68 lakh by Railways Dept :

The Western Railway has been directed to pay a compensation of over ‎Rs.68 lakh to a man, who suffered 100% disability in an accident at a railway station in Maharashtra. The directive comes in connection with an incident in 2010 when a heavy wooden plank fell on the victim's head, causing grievous brain injury and multiple skull fracture.

New world record set by 3.5 lakh sing Indian National Anthem in Gujarat  :

Over 3.5 lakh people on Saturday set a new world record by singing the National Anthem at an event in Gujarat, reports said. The event was organised during the installation of an idol of goddess Khodiyar at a newly-built Khodal Dham temple in Rajkot's Kagvad. We received a certificate of record from Guinness World Records, a temple official said.

World’s longest human chain of 11,000 kilometres formed at Bihar :

Bihar on Saturday claimed to have formed the world's longest human chain, covering an estimated distance of 11,292 kilometres, involving over two crore citizens against alcoholism and liquor. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar joined hands with Lalu Prasad and other political party leaders to start the 45-minute-long chain. The previous record was the 1,050-km human chain formed in Bangladesh.

High-speed train of speed up to 1,000 kmph to be  developed by South Korea

South Korea is planning to develop a high-speed train system in the next three years, aimed to travel at speeds of up to 1,000 kmph. Based on a hyper-tube technology, that propels floating pod-like vehicles through tubes under partial vacuum, the train will travel from Seoul to Busan in half an hour, instead of the current time of three hours.

Passports at Aus airports to be replaced with biometric facial recognition :

Australia has announced to replace passports with biometric recognition of passengers' faces, irises or fingerprints as the means of identification at its international airports. The intention was that international passengers could "literally just walk out like at a domestic airport", an official said. Notably, the government aims at automating 90% of air traveller processing by 2020.

Over 30 lakh trees aimed to plant through Project 'City of Trees' :

A project titled 'City of Trees' is aimed at planting around 30 lakh trees in Greater Manchester area in England over the next 25 years. Apart from a measure of increasing greenery in the region, the project has collaborated with the University of Manchester to test how trees can help reduce surface water flooding in built-up areas.

HSBC accepts to pay Rs.34 cr for charging unreasonable to clients :

Financial services major HSBC has agreed to pay around $5 million (Rs.34 crore) in compensation to customers who were charged "unreasonable" fees for debt collection after falling behind on repayments. The money will be shared between 6,700 people who held credit cards with HSBC. The announcement marks the victory of a whistleblower who has won a 13-year campaign against HSBC.

Infosys has infused $62 mn in startups from its $500 mn fund

Infosys has invested over $62 million in more than 12 startups from its $500 million Innovation fund operating in spaces such as IoT, automation, and drones. The funded startups include Stellaris Venture Partners, Unsilo, Trifacta, Cloudyn, and TidalScale. Set up with an initial corpus of $100 million in 2013, the fund was expanded to $500 million in 2015.

Apple becomes most innovative company of 2016

Technology giant Apple has emerged as the most innovative company for 2016, according to Boston Consulting Group’s annual list which ranks world’s 50 most innovative firms. Google was ranked second, followed by electric carmaker Tesla on the list. Further, ride-hailing service Uber and home rental platform Airbnb were among the firms included in the list for the first time.

AOBA VELOX-III : Singapore's 1st ISS satellite can orbit twice as long as others :

Singapore's first satellite which was launched from the International Space Station (ISS), AOBA VELOX-III, is claimed to stay in orbit for twice as long as similar satellites. A new thruster technology will keep the 110-metre habitable satellite at an orbiting speed of 27,000 kilometres per hour for up to six months, double the three-month lifespan of such satellites.

Ride-hailing app Ola's Chief Operating Officer Pranay Jivrajka has stepped down from his position and PepsiCo veteran Vishal Kaul has taken over Jivrajka's role. The company's first employee, Jivrajka, has been given the new role of founding partner. He will work closely with Co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal to lead strategic initiatives.

Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold title  won by Saina Nehwal

Top seed Saina Nehwal beat Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong 22-20 22-20 to win the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold tournament on Sunday. This is Saina's first title since June 2016, when she won the Australian Open. Saina, who had undergone surgery for a knee injury after her Rio Olympics exit, had said the injury was "maybe the end" of her career.
