Rs.77,000 cr deal for bullet train signed between Gujarat govt and Indian Railways:
The Gujarat Government has signed a memorandum of understanding worth Rs.77,000 crore with the Ministry of Railways for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project. The MoU was signed during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit at Mahatma Mandir. The train is expected to cover 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in about two hours, running at an operating speed of 320 km/h.

Use of Nylon manjas is banned by Mumbai Police in the festival of Makar Sankranti :
The Mumbai Police has banned the use and sale of glass-coated manjas ahead of Makar Sankranti on Saturday. The order issued by the police stated, "[I]njury is caused...on account of pucca thread made out of plastic or similar such synthetic material commonly known as nylon manja. These injuries...turn out to be fatal causing death of people and birds."
New leave system to curb resentment is introduced in CISF :
The CISF has introduced a new system to increase the satisfaction levels among staffers, and thus curb resentment among the personnel. There would be a leave committee for every 200 personnel now, CISF director general OP Singh said. This comes after a CISF jawan shot dead four of his colleagues in Bihar after he reportedly had a dispute over leaves.

Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif to be a speaker at Oxford University
Actress Katrina Kaif will be one of the speakers in the Stage and Screen field for a talk at the Oxford University. The event is scheduled to take place in February. Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons, 'House of Cards' actress Robin Wright and '90210' actress Annalynne McCord will be some of the other speakers at the event.
Indian national Javed Iqbal is handed over by Pakistan to India Army
Pakistan on Thursday handed over Javed Iqbal, an Indian national who had inadvertently crossed the LoC on May 3, 2016, to the Indian Army. Javed was handed over at Chakan Da Bagh crossing point along LoC in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Iqbal's return was made possible after continuous pursuance by the Indian Army, said a defence official.
Delhi Govt declared as free of bird flu after three months
The Delhi government has declared the capital free of bird flu, three months after the outbreak was reported. "This is declared after two consecutive samples collected at 15 days intervals from the last positive results tested negative," the Animal Husbandry Department announced. Following this, the National Zoological Park in New Delhi opened to the public after three months.

Indian Airline 'IndiGo' to ferry mortal remains of Northeast people for free
Budget carrier IndiGo has launched a scheme in association with Delhi Police under which the airline would ferry the bodies of residents from the North Eastern part of India, who die in Delhi, to their homes free of cost. However, the service would be available only on the recommendation of the Delhi Police, the airline said in a release.

Sanitary pad vending machines to be installed in Harayana govt colleges :
The Haryana Government has decided to install automated sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators in the state's all government colleges. A spokesman said it was observed that due to the social taboo, most girls hesitated to go to conventional chemist shops to buy sanitary napkins and thus, indulged in unhygienic practices.

Central govt employee's minimum monthly pension is increased to 9,000 per Person :
The Government has increased the minimum monthly pension to nine thousand per person, besides a two-fold hike in ex-gratia amount for central government employees.
Addressing the meeting of the Standing Committee of Voluntary Agencies in New Delhi yesterday, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office, Dr Jitendra Singh said the ex-gratia amount for the employees has been increased from 10 -15 lakh to 25-35 lakh rupees. He said, there are about 50-55 lakh pensioners in the country and almost 88 per cent of their accounts have been seeded to Aadhaar.

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe signs 1 trillion yen aid package to Philippines
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has signed a 1-trillion yen, about 8.7 billion dollars, aid package over the next five years to the Philippines, meant to improve economic and political relations between the two island nations.
The package is focused on infrastructure and energy. Abe's two-day visit to the archipelago makes him the first foreign leader to visit since the election of the Philippines' President Rodrigo Duterte in May 2016.

Airtel launches its payments bank across India
Bharti Airtel on Thursday launched its pan India payments bank, which is India's first payments bank. Airtel Payments Bank will operate across 29 states with a network of 2.5 lakh banking points through Airtel retail stores. A customer’s Airtel mobile number will be payments bank account number and the company will offer a 7.25% interest rate on savings accounts deposits.

SpiceJet signs deal for 205 planes worth $22 bn with Boeing
Low-cost airline SpiceJet said it has signed a deal for around 205 planes worth $22 billion (over Rs.1.5 lakh crore) with US airplane manufacturer Boeing. This marks the biggest expansion plan by the carrier, which is seeking to take back market share from leader IndiGo. The order is also the largest ever placed by an Indian airline for Boeing aircraft.
Retail inflation hits 3-year low of 3.41% in December
India's retail inflation eased to a three-year low of 3.41% in the month of December, as against 3.63% in November 2016, government data released on Thursday stated. This was due to weak demand as consumers grappled with cash crunch following demonetisation, reports said. Further, food inflation also fell to 1.37% in December, from 2.11% in November.
Industrial production grows 5.7% in November
Allaying fears of a slowdown following demonetisation, the country's industrial production grew 5.7 percent in November 2016, compared to a contraction of 3.4 percent in November of the previous year.
Factory output measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production, IIP, enhanced in November due to better performance of the manufacturing, electricity and capital goods sectors. According to data released by the Central Statistics Office today, the manufacturing sector, which constitutes over 75 percent of the index, grew 5.5 percent in November last year.

Guided Pinaka successfully test-fired at Chandipur in Odisha
The Pinaka Rocket converted to a Guided Pinaka was successfully test-fired from Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha, yesterday. The Pinaka Rocket Mark-II, which evolved from Pinaka Mark-I is equipped with a navigation, guidance and control kit and has been transformed to a Guided Pinaka.
According to an official release, this conversion has considerably enhanced the range and accuracy of Pinaka. The Guided Pinaka is developed jointly by the ARDE Pune, RCI Hyderabad and DRDL Hyderabad.
India's first solar-powered boat launched in Kerala
India's first ever solar powered boat called 'Aditya' was launched at Kochi's Vembanad lake in Kerala on Thursday. The 75-seater boat fitted with 78 rooftop solar panels, will ferry along a 2.5-kilometre route 22 times a day. The boat can travel at a maximum speed of about 14 kmph and cruises without noise and minimal vibration, unlike the diesel ferries.

Physicists create a new form of hydrogen
Austrian physicists created negatively charged hydrogen clusters, a previously unseen form of hydrogen. The existence of hydrogen in ion clusters has been known for the past 40 years, with positively-charged clusters already existing. The researchers injected cold liquid helium droplets with hydrogen before exposing it to an electron beam, resulting in creation of negatively charged hydrogen ions.

Outgoing US President Barack Obama on Thursday awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honour, to Vice President Joe Biden during a surprise event at the White House. Calling Biden "a lion of American history", Obama said the award commemorates an "extraordinary man with an extraordinary career in public service".

Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Vice Chairman of the NDA in Kerala is one of the largest investors and a Director in Arnab Goswami’s media venture Republic. The channel will be a part of company ARG Outlier, where Chandrasekhar has invested Rs.30 crore. Goswami was appointed as Managing Director of ARG Outlier a day after he quit Times Now.
N. Chandrasekaran appointed as a chairman of Tata Sons :
Tata Sons have appointed TCS Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Mr Natarajan Chandrasekaran as its new Chairman. A press release issued by the company last evening said Mr. Chandrasekaran will take charge on 21st February. His appointment comes after the Tata sons removed Cyrus Mistry as the Chairman.
Rajesh Gopinathan becomes new CEO of TCS :
IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Thursday appointed Chief Financial Officer and Vice President Rajesh Gopinathan as the new CEO of the firm. Gopinathan will replace N Chandrasekaran who has been appointed as the new Tata Sons Chairman. The firm also said it has elevated NG Subramaniam as the Chief Operating Officer.

Former world champion Sarita Devi is set to become the first female professional boxer from India. She is training under 73-year-old American Joe Clough, who is known for being a part of Muhammad Ali's coaching staff.
Indian Football team reached 129th rank their best FIFA ranking in over a decade :
The Indian national football team on Thursday moved up six places to the 129th position in the latest FIFA rankings, its best ranking since December 2005, when it was at the 127th position. Notably, the Indian team has won nine of its last 11 matches, which has helped it jump 42 places in less than two years.
