Nadda lays foundation of super specialty centre at Medical college in Allahabad



i) Union Health Minister JP Nadda laid the foundation of super specialty health centre at Moti Lal Nehru Medical college in Allahabad today. The new super specialty block will be built under the “Pradhanmantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana” scheme.

ii) The new project will provide facilities of super specialty treatments and will also give opportunity for various Post PG courses in specialized medical fields.

iii) While laying the foundation of super specialty block the Union Health Minister said that the Centre has allocated sufficient fund for various health schemes being implemented across the country.

iv) He said that the state Medical Colleges and Hospitals are being upgraded and facilities in primary and community health centers will also be improved. He said a cancer hospital in Allahabad will also be built in the next phase.

Govt issues clarification on amendment to Payment of Wages Act



i) Government today clarified media reports that it is bringing an amendment to Payment of Wages Act to make mandatory payment of wages to the workers only through cheque or accounts transfers are untrue.

ii) Ministry of Labour and Employment said in a release that the government proposes to bring an amendment to Section 6 of the Act which will further provide crediting the wages in the bank account of the employees or payment through cheque along with the existing provisions of payment in current coin or currency notes.

iii) This is being done to facilitate the employers from making payment of wages using the banking facilities also in addition to the existing modes of payment of wages.

iv) Centre and states will have to come up with the notification to specify the industrial or other establishments where the employer shall pay wages through cheque or by crediting the wages in employees’ bank account.

Thaawarchand Gehlot Releases 'Saanjhi Saanjh' Newspaper

i) Thaawarchand Gehlot, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment released the first issue of a National Newspaper dedicated to Senior Citizen, 'Saanjhi Saanjh'.

ii) This newspaper will carry important and useful news pertaining to elderly persons besides inspirational stories. It will serve as a bridge between old and new generations.

Cabinet approves creation of Índian Enterprise Development Services

i) The Cabinet gave its approval to the Cadre review and formation of a new service in the name of Índian Enterprise Development Services (IEDS) in the Office of Development Commissioner (MSME), Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

ii) The creation of the new cadre and change in structure will not only strengthen the organization but will also help to achieve the vision of Startup India, Stand-up India and Make in India.

iii) The measure will enhance the capacity and efficiency of the organization and also help in achieving growth in MSME sector through a focused and dedicated cadre of technical officers.

BSNL to launch mobile app with SBI in Assam for digital transaction

i) In Assam, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, BSNL will soon launch a mobile app with SBI to facilitate cashless transaction. Talking to AIR, the Chief General Manager of the BSNL M K Seth said, the app will help people, even in remote areas, in digital banking.

ii) Mr. Seth said, BSNL has deputed senior officials at seven zones to provide necessary help to banks after demonetisation. He said, BSNL is providing networking and high speed mobile services in interior areas as per requirement of banks.

ALIMCO signs MoU with UK trust to produce affordable wheel chairs

i) Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawarchand Gehlothas said that there is a need to promote the products under the make in India initiative.

ii) He was speaking on the occasion of transfer technology and consultancy services agreement between Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) and UK based Motivation Charitable trust.

iii) Through the agreement, technology transfer will enable ALIMCO to produce cost effective and affordable wheel chairs in partner with UK based Motivation Charitable trust.

INTERNATIONAL:

India Achieves 4th rank in Global Wind Power Installed Capacity Index

i) India has been ranked 4th in the Global Wind Power Installed Capacity index after China, USA and Germany with cumulative installed wind power generation capacity of 28,279 MW in 2016.

ii) The Government is aiming to increase share of clean energy through massive development and deployment of new and renewable energy in India to meet Energy security, Electricity shortages, Energy access and Climate change among others.

India takes over Britain to become world's 5th largest economy

i) With its fast economic growth in over two decades and a half, India has now taken over the United Kingdom as the fifth largest economy in the world.

ii) A report published in Forbes magazine said that this dramatic shift has been driven by India's rapid economic growth over the past 25 years as well as Britain's recent woes with the Brexit.

iii) The report further said that this gap is expected to widen as India grows at 6 to 8 per cent per annum compared to UK's growth of 1 to 2 per cent per annum until 2020, and likely beyond.

iv) Following the change in the rankings, India’s economy now stands behind the United States, China, Japan, Germany and France.

APPOINTMENTS:

Deepak Agarwal appointed CEO of Noida Authority

i) The Uttar Pradesh Government on 20 December 2016 appointed Deepak Agarwal, CEO of Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), as the CEO of Noida Authority.

ii) Deepak Agarwal will replace P K Agarwal, who was officiating as the CEO of Noida Authority. P K Agarwal was given the charge of Noida after the Uttar Pradesh Government relieved senior IAS officer Rama Raman from the post on 25 August 2016. However, P K Agarwal will continue to function as the additional CEO of Noida Authority.

Healthy Ministry wins gold in the Web Ratna Category

i) The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare won gold in the Web Ratna category in the recently concluded Digital India awards, 2016, conferred by the Ministry of Electronics & IT to promote more innovative e-governance initiatives by the government entities.

ii) Hon'ble Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology and Law & Justice, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad presented the award. Digital India awards, earlier known as the Web Ratna Awards, were instituted under the Ambit of National Portal of India.

iii) The award acknowledges exemplary initiatives of various government entities in the realm of e-governance. Shri Jitendra Arora, Director, e-Governance, at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare received the award.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:

World's first Chikungunya vaccine developed

i) US researchers have developed a vaccine for chikungunya fever made from an insect-specific virus that does not have any effect on people, making the vaccine safe and effective.

ii) The study indicated that the vaccine quickly produces a strong immune defense and completely protects mice and nonhuman primates from disease when exposed to the chikungunya virus. The findings were published in journal of Nature Medicine.

India successfully test-fires nuclear-capable cruise missile Nirbhay

i) India today successfully test-fired its potent nuclear-capable long range cruise missile 'Nirbhay' from the Integrated Missile Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha.

ii) The state-of-the-art missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation was test fired successfully from the launch complex 3 of the ITR at 11:56 hours.

iii) Nirbhay is very manoeuverable and can fly at tree-top level, making it difficult to detect on radar, and strikes targets more than 700 km away carrying nuclear warheads, giving India the capability to strike deep into enemy territory.

SPORTS NEWS:

AIBA grants full membership to Boxing Federation of India

i) AIBA unanimously granted full membership to the recently-formed Boxing Federation of India, BFI at a meeting on the sidelines of its 70th anniversary gala in Montreux, Switzerland.

ii) BFI President Ajay Singh, who is currently in Montreux to take part in the AIBA event, told this today. With this, India's return to the international boxing fold is complete.

iii) India's international suspension for the past four years had resulted in the isolation of the country's boxers, who were deprived of foreign exposure for most part.

India end 2016 as No.1 Test team after series sweep over England

i) India have ended the year as the Number one ranked Test side after posting a 4-nil win over England in the five-match series. The hosts won the final Test at Chennai yesterday by an innings and 75 runs.

ii) The series win helped India gain five points and they have moved to 120 points in the last Test team rankings update of 2016, 15 points ahead of second placed Australia.

iii) The ViratKohli-led side, which was awarded the ICC Test Championship Mace on 11 October following a 3-0 home series sweep over New Zealand, can't be overtaken this year since theteam rankings are updated only at the end of each Test series.

Ashwin, Jadeja occupy top two spots in ICC Test bowling chart

i) Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have made it a rare instance of two India bowlers topping the ICC Test rankings.

ii) This follows left-arm spinner Jadeja's maiden 10-wicket match haul against England in the Chennai Test which propelled him to the second position.

iii) Jadeja's performance earned him 66 points and brought him within eight points of star off-spinner Ashwin, who has already been occupying the number one position.

iv) This is just the second time the top two spots in the bowlers chart is occupied by India players.

OBITUARY:

Malayalam actor Jagannatha Varma passes away

i) Renowned Malayalam actor K. N. Jagannatha Varma passed away at a private hospital at Neyyattinkarain Thiruvananthapuram Tuesday. He was 77.

ii) The actor was suffering from pneumonia. Varma, who was also a Kathakali artist, acted in 575 films and numerous TV serials. He also served as a police officer and had retired from the force as SP.
