First World Tsunami Awareness Day: 05 NOVEMBER 2016
i. The First World Tsunami Awareness Day is being observed today (5 November) across the world. The theme for the year is Effective Education and Evacuation Drills. The observance of the day will help to spread awareness among people across the world in matters related to the dangers of the tsunami. It will also stress on the importance of early warning systems in order to mitigate damage from the often devastating natural hazard.
Govt Launches PMSMA for Pregnant Women
i. Govthas launched a scheme to provide free health check-ups to pregnant women at government health centres& hospitals. The PradhanMantriSurakshitMatritvaAbhiyan (PMSMA) was announced by PM Modi during his monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat on June 9. It invites the private sector to provide free ante-natal services (ANC) on the 9th of every month on a voluntary basis to pregnant women.
Asia-Pacific nations resolve to work for disaster risk
i. As many as 51 countries in the Asia-Pacific region today resolved to work for handling all kinds of disasters by strengthening the apparatus and to tackle such exigencies through global frameworks. In a statement, 'New Delhi Declaration', the participating nations of the three-day Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction 2016 spelt out the commitment towards preventing and reducing disaster risk and strengthening the resilience of communities.
ii. The conference also commemorated the first World Tsunami Awareness Day. The observance of the day stressed on the importance of early warning systems and preparedness of communities in order to mitigate damage from the often devastating natural hazard. It was the first Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction after the advent of SFDRR.
First International Agro-biodiversity Congress to be held tomorrow
i. The first ever International Agro-biodiversity Congress will be held in New Delhi tomorrow. Prime Minister NarendraModi will inaugurate the four day conference which will be attended by 900 delegates from 60 countries. The event will initiate and encourage a dialogue among stakeholders, including farmers, to better understand everyones role in agro-biodiversity management and the conservation of genetic resources.
ii. The IAC will shed light on how conserving agro-biodiversity can lead to its sustainable use for food and nutritional security of ever-increasing world population. It will also address the threats imposed by climate change and ways to achieve sustainable agriculture production. India is one of the mega-diversity centres possessing unique crop and animal diversity.
CHRI to hold national workshop on condition of prisons on Nov 8
Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, CHRI, will hold a day long national workshop on condition of prisons in the country in New Delhi on Tuesday. Briefing media in New Delhi, Director of the institute SanjoyHazarika said, two national reports on prison monitoring will be launched during the conference.
During the interaction, the CHRI quoting the National Crime Records Bureau data said, the prisons in the country are over-crowded and it is holding more than 4 lakh 19 thousand prisoners against the capacity of 3 lakh 66 thousand. The institute said, nearly 70 per cent of the inmates in the jails are yet to be proven guilty and one-fourth of them have already spent more than a year behind bars. The CHRI said that not even a single prison in India matches international standards
Poor in India can register themselves online for availing houses under “Housing for All by 2022” scheme: Venkaiah Naidu
Union Urban Development Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu has said the poor in India can register themselves online for availing houses under the Centre’s “Housing for All by 2022” scheme. Addressing the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Builders Association of India in Chennai this morning, he said the public can apply through the over 2-lakh Common Service Centers across the nation at a nominal cost of Rs 25.
The scheme came into force yesterday, in collaboration with the Union IT Ministry. Mr Naidu said this will avoid the pain of approaching Tehsildar office, collectorates and other government offices. Their applications would be forwarded to the state governments who after due verification would grant houses. The Centre is also taking action to bring in a Single-Window Clearance system for Construction activity wherein an application needs to be processed within 60 days. If no reply is given within the period, it would be deemed as an approval for the project, Mr Naidu informed.
Buddha Mahotsava kicks off in Arunachal Pradesh
In Arunachal Pradesh, the three-day Buddha Mahotsava started in West Kameng District yesterday. The first day of the festival showcased the vibrant culture of different tribes of the region, like that of Monpa, Sajolang(Miji) Aka, Sartang, Bugun and Sherdukpen tribes. The festival was opened by BJP MP ManojTiwari. He said, the Centre is giving top priority to the development of Arunachal Pradesh.
Indo-Tibetan Border Police, IMF first to scale Mt Kangto
A joint team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Indian Mountaineering Foundation has become the first to scale the base of the 7,090-metre-high Mount Kangto, the highest peak of Arunachal Pradesh. The expedition was flagged off by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister PemaKhandu in September, while the feat was achieved in October.

India, China agree to maintain high-level exchanges
India and China have agreed to maintain the pace of high level exchanges including in the political, economic, defence and counter-terrorism fields. External Affairs Ministry in a release issued in New Delhi said, National Security Advisor AjitDoval met with State Councillor of China Yang Jiechi yesterday. They agreed that the forthcoming high level engagement in counter-terrorism field is yet another manifestation of growing convergence of views of two countries on this pressing challenge facing international community.
Indonesian President postpones his visit to Australia
Indonesian President JokoWidodo has postponed his visit to Australia following violence at a protest by Muslims against Jakarta's Governor. A statement from Presidential office said in Jakarta today that the President has decided to postpone his scheduled state visit to Australia, due to the latest situation and condition in Jakarta.
The demonstrators demanded the resignation of Jakarta's Governor, BasukiTjahajaPurnama, a Christian, of having insulted Islam's holy book, the Koran. Indonesian police have said one person died and more than 100 were injured in the clashes. At a news conference held in the early hours today, Widodo blamed political actors for exploiting the situation.
Paris climate agreement becomes international law
Paris climate change agreement, the first ever deal involving all the world's nations in the battle against global warming, came into force on 04th November. The deal seeks commitments to cap the use of fossil fuels like coal and oil. Currently, the deal is backed by 97 countries that are collectively responsible for nearly 67.5% of the global greenhouse gas emissions.
The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) dealing with greenhouse gasses emissions mitigation, adaptation, and finance starting in the year 2020.
AnuragBhushan unveils Mahatma Gandhi statue at Consulate office in Dubai
The Consul General of India in Dubai AnuragBhushan today unveiled the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Consulate office in Dubai. A large number of Indian expatriates were present at the unveiling ceremony. Rich tributes were paid to the Father of the Nation. The statue of Mahatma Gandhi is about two and a half feet in height and weighs around 10 kgs.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Consul General lauded the virtue of peace and Ahimsa espoused by Gandhiji and also announced that efforts will be made to open a Gandhi Centre in the Consulate premises in association with the Karnataka Gandhi SmarakNidhi soon. This will be the first of its kind initiative in the Middle East region. The Consulate in Dubai also celebrated the 141st Birth Anniversary of SardarVallabhai Patel today , popularly known as the Iron Man of India.

Yes Bank launches new mobile banking app
India's Private sector lender Yes Bank has launched “Yes Mobile 2.0”. The app will allow customers to undertake most transactions on the app including NetBanking registration, thereby eliminating the need to visit the website or a banking branch.
President approves payment of 2% DA from July 1
President Pranab Mukherjee on 04 November 2016 approved the 2% hike in Dearness Allowance to central government employees from July 1, a move that could benefit 50.68 lakh employees and 54.24 lakh pensioners. DA is provided to employees and pensioners to minimise the impact of price rise on their earnings. Earlier this year, DA was hiked 6% to 125% of the basic pay.

CII launches unique platform ‘Startup Mentorship Circle’
In view of Prime Minister NarendraModi’s vision of nurturing entrepreneurship, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has launched a unique platform called ‘Startup Mentorship Circle’ to help in connecting start-ups with the global marketplace.
CII provides perhaps the largest network for start-ups with its 8000 direct and 2 lakh indirect members. During the ‘Speed Meeting with Mentors’, leaders of Indian industry chatted with some of the start-ups, assessed their plans and fine-tuned their business plans.
Centre imposes Rs 10,000 crpenalty on RIL and its partners
Government has slapped a nearly 10,000 crore rupee fine on Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and its partners BP and Niko for pumping out gas that flowed to the Krishna Godavari-D6 Block from an adjoining field owned by ONGC. The Centre has given RIL a month to respond. The Oil Ministry, in a notice, to all the three partners sought 1.47 billion dollars for producing nearly 338 million British thermal unit in seven years ended March this year.
After deducting about 72 million dollars royalty paid on the gas produced and adding an interest at the rate of Libor plus 2 per cent totaling nearly 150 million dollars, a total demand of 1.55 billion dollars was made on RIL, BP and Niko. RIL said, it will issue a notice of arbitration against what it called was a globally unprecedented and arbitrary decision. It said, it carried out its activities within the boundaries of the block it operates and abided by the law.

Assam govt inks MoU with Civil Aviation Ministry for regional connectivity
In Assam, giving a fillip to regional connectivity in the aviation sector, the state government has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Civil Aviation under Regional Connectivity Scheme also known as UDAN. AIR correspondent reports that the MoU was signed by the Chairman of Airports Authority of India Dr. GuruprasadMohapatro and Commissioner and Secretary, Government of Assam, AshutoshAgnihotri in presence of Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok GajapatiRaju in Guwahati on Friday.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) shall be the Implementing Agency for the scheme on behalf of Ministry of Civil Aviation. As per the MoU, the State Government shall reduce VAT to 1% or less on ATF at RCS Airports and for RCS flights from other airports located within the state. Assam shall also provide minimum land for development and expansion of RCS Airports.
India, Venezuela sign deals to increase oil production
India and Venezuela have signed an oil production deals worth about 1.45 billion US dollar to increase oil production. The agreement was signed between India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), VenezeulasPetroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), and Venezuela’s consortium Delta Finance BVin Caracas, Venezeula.
The agreement comes amid a severe economic crisis in Venezuela, and it is seen as a way to boost oil production, pay off debts, obtain funds from other foreign partners, and increase the country’s oil income. The Indo-Venezuelan partnership, created in 2009, is expected to double the San Cristobal field daily oil production from 20,000 to 40,000 barrels of oil.

Shyamal Mukherjee Elected PWC Chairman
Shyamal Mukherjee has been elected as the chairman of PwC India, replacing two-time chairman Deepak Kapoor. As per PwC Governance rules, a chairman is allowed to serve a maximum of two terms. The new chairman will take over from Deepak Kapoor on January 1, 2017. Mukherjee is a member of the India leadership team and part of PwC’s Global Strategy team.

Kamala Harris set to become 1st Indian-American US Senator
Kamala Harris, California's Attorney General, is on the cusp of becoming the first Indian-American Senator in the US Congress. The latest polls have placed ahead of her rival, days before the 8th of November general elections. Harris, 51, has already got the backing of US President Barack Obama to be the state's next Senator, brightening her chances to become the first from the Indian community ever to be a member of the Upper House.
She heads into the US Senate election with a considerable lead over fellow Democrat Loretta Sanchez. Harris, born in Oakland, California, is the daughter of an Indian mother who emigrated from Chennai in 1960 and a Jamaican American father.
Haryana govt conferred award for e-governance
The Haryana government has been conferred with prestigious award for outstanding work in the field of e-governance at the 'State of the States Conclave 2016' organized by private media channel, India Today, in New Delhi today.
On behalf of Haryana Chief Minister ManoharLal, his Additional Principal Secretary DrRakesh Gupta received the award from Union Finance Minister ArunJaitley today. Notably Haryana government has taken many initiatives using information technology like e birth registration, e registry of land, e PDS system to provide e-governance to the people.

Taylor Swift has been named the highest-paid woman in music for 2016 in Forbes’ annual list. US business magazine estimated Swift earned $170m between 1 June 2015 and 1 June 2016. Trailing behind Swift on the list was Adele, who placed second with $US80.5 million. Number three on the list was Madonna, off the back of the successful Rebel Heart tour which grossed $US170 million

China has selected historical adventure film Xuanzang, which co-stars Bollywood actor SonuSood, as its official entry for the 89th Academy Awards. The project is a part of the three-film agreement signed between India and China.

Online platform explaining Indian laws launched
An online platform named 'Nyaaya' has been launched in India which explains the country's central and state laws in a user-friendly method, supported by interactive guides and visualisations. It explains sexual harassment, domestic violence, dowry and anti-corruption laws among others. Currently available in English, Nyaaya wants to launch its service in India’s 22 official languages.

Indian eves beat China to lift Asian Champions Trophy title
The Indian women's hockey team lifted the Asian Champions Trophy title, after a 2-1 win over China in the final in Singapore on Saturday. India's Deep Grace Ekka opened the scoring with a 13th-minute strike, before China's ZhongMenglingequalised in the 44th minute. India claimed the title after Deepika Thakur's rebound strike in the final minute of the match.

Vice President Shri. M Hamid Ansari has released the book ‘An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India’ authored by DrShashiTharoor. ShashiTharoor is a LokSabha MP & former Congress minister.
