Odisha: free Wi-Fi service launched at Cuttack Railway Station



i. In Odisha, after Free Wi-Fi service in Bhubaneswar and Puri railway stations, the service was launched today at Cuttack Railway Station making it the third such place in the State.  Cuttack MP and Biju Janata Dal leader Bhatruhari Mahatab inaugurated the high-speed internet service provided by Google in collaboration with RailTel.

ii. As a part of the Digital India initiative, the Indian Railways have made a target to provide internet facilities to the passengers at 100 busiest stations by the end of this year. Notably, Bhubaneswar was the second railway station covered under the free Internet Wi-Fi project, after Mumbai Central in January this year.

Bhai Dooj being celebrated all over the country


i. Bhai Dooj, the festival of symbol of brother-sister love is being celebrated all over the country today. On this day sisters pray for their brothers to have long and happy lives by performing Tika ceremony and brothers offer gifts to their sisters. Bhaiya Dooj is also known as Bhau Beej and Bhathru Dwithiya.

ii. This day is also observed as Yama Dwitiya. As per legends, Goddess Yamuna fed her brother Yamraj on Kartik Dwitiya at her own home. Since then this day is known as Yama Dwitiya. In Uttar Pradesh, Mathura, district administration has made elaborate arrangements in anticipation of huge crowd at Vishram Ghat along Yamuna for mass bathing today on this occasion. Lakhs of people take the customary bath in the Yamuna on Bhai Dooj.

PM to set in motion year-long Swarna Jayanti celebrations of Haryana

i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Haryana in Gurugram today. The State, which was created on 1st of November 1966, completes 50 years today. During the event, Mr. Modi will launch year-long Swarna Jayanti celebrations of the state.

ii. He is also expected to make important announcements. On the eve of the event, the State Government yesterday announced welfare measures for various sections of the society including unemployed post-graduates, ex-Servicemen and those drawing social security pensions.

iii. Apart from Mr Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled States and more than 50,000 people are expected to attend the event at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium. Security has been tightened in the city in view of the mega event.

PM inaugurates Chhattisgarh foundation day celebrations; Unveils Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya's statue

i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Chhattisgarh's 16th foundation day celebrations in Naya Raipur. The Prime Minister will later address people gathered on the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee ground, where the 5-day long Rajyotsava is being held.

ii. Chhattisgarh Governor B D Tandon and Chief Minister Raman Singh are also present at the site. Mr Modi unveiled the statue of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya in Naya Raipur. He also dedicate to people, 'Ekatma Path' and the Bus Rapid Transport System in the city.

Centre notifies rules for Real Estate Act for five UTs

i. The Centre has notified the rules for Real Estate Act that seeks to regulate the housing sector besides bringing transparency and ensuring timely completion of projects in five Union Territories. An official release said in New Delhi that the rules notified by the Housing Ministry will be applicable to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, and Lakshadweep.

ii. Ministry of Urban Development will come out with such rules for the National Capital Region of Delhi while the other States and UTs will come out with their own rules. The Act, which is touted as a major reform measure to regulate the vast real estate sector, requires registration of all projects with state-level Real Estate Regulatory Authorities to ensure protection of the interests of both buyers and builders.

Puducherry celebrates Liberation Day with great fervor

Puducherry today celebrated its Liberation Day with great fervor. It was on 1st of November 1954 that the treaty of De Facto merger was signed by India and France ending 280 years of French rule in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Chief Minister V Narayanasamy took salute at the function held at Gandhi Tidal Beach Road.

A colourful parade by contingents of various police units and school students was held as part of the Liberation Day celebrations. Later, Chief Minister met freedom fighters who attended the programme. Liberation Day celebrations are also held in the other three enclaves of Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Liberation Day is a public holiday in the Union Territory.

TDP to launch 'Jana Chaitanya Yatra' in Andhra Pradesh

The ruling Telugu Desam Party will launch 'Jana Chaitanya Yatra' from today in Andhra Pradesh to highlight the welfare and developmental initiatives of the government. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu will also launch a membership drive for the party in the state's Prakasam district. President to embark on three day visit to Nepal tomorrow

President Pranab Mukherjee is embarking on a three day state visit to Nepal starting tomorrow.  This is the first visit by an Indian head of the state in 18 years to the neighbouring Himalayan country.  Mr. Mukherjee’s visit is seen as a “goodwill friendship visit” on the invitation of Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari. A high-level delegation is accompanying the President.

During the visit, he will hold talks with the President, Prime Minister and other leaders of Nepal. Mr. Mukherjee is likely to have discussions on various bilateral, regional and international issues of significance like post-earthquake reconstruction projects, concerns of Madhesi community among others.

Indo-Nepal joint military exercise kicks off

Seeking to boost their defence ties, India and Nepal yesterday commenced their 10th joint military exercise which will be held over two weeks with emphasis on counter terrorism in mountainous terrain. Indo-Nepal Joint Military Exercise Surya Kiran commenced at Army Battle School, Saljhandi in Nepal.

The Surya Kiran series of Exercises are being conducted annually, alternatively in Nepal and India. Notably in the series of military training exercises undertaken by India with various countries, Surya Kiran series with Nepal is the largest in terms of troop’s participation.

Indian Army said in a statement that the aim of this exercise is to conduct battalion level joint training with emphasis on Counter Terrorism in mountainous terrain. Aspects of Disaster Management have also been included in the exercise. Joint Battalion Level Exercise will enhance defence co-operation and relations between the two nations.

Navy chief leaves on 4-day visit to Myanmar

Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba has left on a four-day visit to Myanmar during which he will hold talks with the top defence authorities and seek to deepen bilateral military ties. During his official visit beginning today, Admiral Lanba will hold bilateral discussions with U Myint Swe, First Vice President; Commander-in-Chief, Myanmar Army and Admiral Tin Aung San, Commander-in-Chief, Myanmar Navy.

The visit of the Chief of Naval Staff will also coincide with the port call of Indian Naval ships of the 1st Training Squadron which are on a overseas deployment as part of training curriculum of Indian naval cadets. The two navies cooperate with each other in terms of training and operational interactions. India has been partnering the capacity building of the Myanmar Navy through assistance in military hardware and equipment.

Pope Francis marks anniversary of Protestant Reformation in Sweden

Pope Francis has taken part in events to commemorate the anniversary of the Protestant Reformation during his trip to Sweden.  The Pope appealed to Catholics and Lutherans to "mend" history and look with honesty at the past, "recognising error and seeking forgiveness". By tradition, on 31 October 1517 the German theologian Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of a church. The papal visit kicks off a year of events to mark the quincentenary. Pope Francis and Lutheran leaders presided over a ecumenical prayer service in Lund cathedral in southern Sweden yesterday.

Banks to report frauds of Rs 1 crore and above to CVC

With several high-ticket alleged frauds like Vijay Mallya loan default case coming to fore, Central Vigilance Commission has now made it mandatory for the public sector banks to report to it all such matters involving funds over Rs one crore.

The Commission will also call regular monthly meetings of senior officials of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), CBI and banks to monitor probe in suspected bank frauds of Rs 50 crore and above.

Finance Ministry releases Rs 1,093 crore for restoration of infrastructure in J&K

The finance ministry released first installment of special assistance of Rs 1,093.34 crore for repair and permanent restoration of damaged public buildings in Jammu and Kashmir in pursuance of the announcement made by the Prime Minister last November.A total sum of Rs 2,000 crore has been provided for permanent restoration of damaged Infrastructure such as schools, colleges, hospitals, bus stations and other critical public infrastructure under Prime Minister Reconstruction Plan for J&K.

The Prime Minister Reconstruction Plan for J&K was announced by Narendra Modi on November 7, 2015, for Rs 80,068 crore for post flood relief and restoration and long-term development of the state, including assistance for small trade and business, power, new and renewable energy.

China, Belgium to enhance investment ties

China and Belgium have agreed to expand cooperation in areas such as investment, new energy, and in the Belt and Road Initiative. This came following the meeting of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel in Beijing. Further, Xi said that the two countries should explore cooperation in high-end technology and industries with high added value.

India and Palestine inks MoU to setup Palestine-Indo techno park in Ramallah

India and Palestine on Monday signed a MoU for setting up a Palestine-India Techno Park in Ramallah. During the visit of President Pranab Mukherjee to Palestine in October last year, the announcement for setting up of park was made.

India has announced a grant of $12 million for setting up the park with payment of $3 million each on half-yearly basis for two years.The Palestinian side has made the land available for the project.President of India, during his 2015 visit to Palestine announced five projects with regards to solidarity with Palestinian crisis. These projects includes a Techno Park in Ramallah ($12 million), Palestine Institute of Diplomacy ($4.5 million), and India-Palestine Centre of Excellence in ICT in Gaza ($1 million).

IRS officer Sushil Chandra to take over as CBDT chairman

Senior Indian Revenue Service officer, Sushil Chandra will take over as chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) today. Chandra, a 1980-batch officer of Indian Revenue Service, is at present working in the board as Member (Investigation).

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister had early this month approved the name of Mr Chandra as the CBDT Chairman to replace Rani Singh Nair who retired from service yesterday. CBDT has six members apart from the chairman, and is responsible for framing policy and administrative issues related to direct taxes and the Income Tax department.

Rekha to get Lifetime Achievement Award at Dubai film fest

Veteran actress Rekha is set to be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Dubai International Film Festival. Rekha reportedly acted in 180 films over forty years. The fest, which will take place from December 7 to 14 this year, has earlier honoured film personalities including Omar Sharif, Morgan Freeman, Sean Penn, Yash Chopra, and Subhash Ghai

India now world's third largest startup base: Nasscom

India has emerged as the world's third largest startup base, behind the US and UK, according to a new report by Nasscom. Nearly 1,400 new Indian startups are expected by end of 2016, and the country will be home to 10,500 startups by 2020, the reports claims. It added that Bengaluru, NCR, and Mumbai remain the country's major startup hubs.

Indian students make device that detects panic, sends SOS

Four Indian engineering students have created a working prototype of an earphone-like device 'NeuroBuds', which detects when a user panics, and sends an SOS alert or a call for help. The device eliminates the need to physically make calls or press buttons on the smartphone. Once a panic signal is detected, a 10-second gap is given to dismiss an alert.

Engineered spinach plants can detect explosives

In a first, MIT researchers have engineered spinach plants, which are capable of detecting hidden land mines and other explosives. By embedding spinach leaves with carbon nanotubes, scientists transformed spinach plants into sensors that can detect harmful chemical compounds called nitroaromatics found in explosives, and can then relay the information to a smartphone-like device.

92-Year-Old Wins Gold At World Masters Athletic Championships

In a first, a 92-year-old Indian Navy veteran has won a gold medal in a 5,000-metres race walk at the World Masters Athletics Championships being held in Perth.  Commodore V Sriramulu (Retd), a veteran settled in Visakhapatnam, has won the Gold Medal in the Race Walk event in the age group of 90-95 years.  He is also participating in two other race walks - one of 10 kms and another of 20 kms this week.

Indian junior men's hockey team win 4 Nations tournament

Indian junior men's hockey team clinched the 4 Nations Invitational Tournament in Spain by defeating Germany 5-2 in the final. India's Harmanpreet Singh was named the best player of the tournament while Varun Kumar was the top goal scorer. Hockey India announced ₹1 lakh prize money for each of the players and ₹50k for the support staff.

Andy Murray Win Erste Bank Open Title

Andy Murray has beaten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to win the Erste Bank Open.  Murray overcame the Frenchman with a 6-3, 7-6 victory He has also recently won the China Open and Shanghai Rolex Masters.  The Scot now closes in on world No 1 Novak Djokovic with the victory. Three times a Grand Slam winner and twice Olympic champion, Murray has never been top of the world rankings.

FIFA World Cup Trophy creator passes away at 95

Silvio Gazzaniga, who created the FIFA World Cup Trophy, passed away on Monday in Milan at the age of 95. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said, "He was the creator of a trophy, which is the most beautiful emblem that FIFA could dream of having as a prize." FIFA had received 53 proposals from seven different countries before confirming Gazzaniga's design.
