International Conference on Voter Education begins in Delhi



i. An International Conference on Voter Education organised by the Election Commission of began in New Delhi today. The topic of the Conference is Voter Education for Inclusive, Informed and Ethical Participation.

ii. The three day Conference was inaugurated by Chief Election Commissioner Dr Nasim Zaidi. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Zaidi said, India has delivered credible elections each time without interruption for over six decades. He said, election commission rediscovered itself in 2009 when it focused on voter education as a priority.

Nirmala Sitharaman unveils logo for IPR cell in New Delhi



i. Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today unveiled the logo of Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) at a function in New Delhi.

ii. It has been designed keeping in mind the slogan of the National IPR Policy - Creative India, Innovative India.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Sitharaman said, this is an ambitious task as India’s intellectual property related activities need great traction.

The CIPAM has been set up as a professional body in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion to take forward the implementation of the National IPR Policy. It was approved by the Government in May this year.

Indo-Bangla bilateral meeting for rail project held in Tripura

i.In Tripura, the Indo-Bangla bilateral meeting for Agartala-Akhaura rail project was held in Agartala. Issues related to land acquisition, tendering process and completion of the project were discussed.

The 10-member Indian delegation was led by Mr. Ajit Kumar Gupte, Joint Secretary (DPA), Ministry of External Affairs during the talks. The Bangladesh delegation was led by Shashi Kumar Singha, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Railways.

Mr. Ajit Kr. Gupte told that the work from Indian side will be started in December. He said, the project is expected to be completed within two and half years. The total cost of the project would be 972.52 crores, out of which 580 crores will be spent by India and 392.52 crores will be spent by Bangladesh.

Three day conference of Indian Air Force concludes

i. Three day conference of top commanders of Indian Air Force concluded today in New Delhi .

The conference deliberated on various issues including drafting of women as fighter pilots, induction of fighter aircraft like LCA Tejas and Rafale.

Addressed by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, the conference discussed crucial issues facing the Air Force in detail.

President to inaugurate 28th Accountants General Conference tomorrow

President Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate the 28th Accountants General Conference in New Delhi tomorrow. The Accountants General from various places of the country will participate in the conference and will review the international 'best practices' prevalent in audit and accounting.

Finance Ministry in a release said, the conference offers a forum for exchange of ideas, grappling with evolving issues and experience sharing.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Public Accounts Committee Chairman, Prof. K V Thomas and CAG Shashi Kant Sharma will also address the Conference. On the second day of the conference Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will address the officers. The two-day conference is being organized by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India

Consumer Mela starts tomorrow for spot registration of consumer grievances

Department of Consumer Affairs is organizing Consumer Mela 2016 at Central Park in New Delhi from tomorrow for on spot registration of consumer grievances.  An official release said, the objective of the Mela is to bring consumers, companies, regulators and Department of Consumer Affairs on one platform for consumer awareness and grievance redressals.

Industry bodies like CII, FICCI and PHD Chambers and sector regulators like FSSAI and TRAI will participate in the Mela. The Consumer Counseling Mechanism, popularly known as National Consumer Helpline will educate consumers about their rights and responsibilities, the procedure for seeking Grievance Redressal in the Mela

AP Cabinet decides to allot land for steel plant

Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has decided to allot land for steel plant proposed in Orvakallu in Kadapa district. It was decided to commence production in 2018. The Cabinet which met yesterday in Vijayawada presided by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has also decided to incorporate Industrial Park in each constituency in an area of 100 acres to encourage setting up of small and medium scale industries.

Further, the state cabinet has decided to amend Industrial Development Enable Act. It was also decided to include Hindupur town in Ananthapur City Development body.

It was also decided set up Godavari Urban Development authority with Kakinada and Rajahmundry cities and to establish AP cultural and tourism heritage board besides bringing private agriculture colleges under the purview of Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University. The Cabinet also approved the State Rent Control Bill 2016.

Mumbai 39th On Global Power City Index

London has topped the 2016 Global Power City Index for the fifth consecutive year. Mumbai was ranked 39th on the list for business, innovation and culture, according to a report released.

The 2016 Global Power City Index (GPCI) report was released by the Mori Memorial Foundation’s Institute for Urban Strategies. Mumbai, the only Indian city to feature on the index, was ranked 39th.

Name Vadodara airport after King Gaekwad III: RS MP

Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani has requested PM Narendra Modi to name the Vadodara airport after late king Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III. This demand has been raised over the years by various people, Nathwani added. Gaekwad ruled the erstwhile princely state of Baroda from 1875 to 1939. Notably, PM Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the new airport on October 22

Burundi first nation to quit war crimes court

Burundi's parliament has recently voted to withdraw from Rome Statute, the 1998 treaty establishing the International Criminal Court (ICC), making it the first country to quit. This comes after several African nations expressed concern that ICC has been focussing only on Africa. Notably, ICC is the first world body with permanent jurisdiction to prosecute genocide and war crimes

UNESCO criticizes Israeli excavation of Palestinian religious sites

United Nations cultural agency has adopted a resolution criticizing Israeli excavation of Palestinian religious sites at al-Aqsa and al-Haram al-Sharif.

Palestine's deputy ambassador to UNESCO, Mounir Anastas, told reporters the resolution reminds Israel that they are the occupying power in East Jerusalem and it asks them to stop all their violations, including archaeological excavations around religious sites.

The UNESCO resolution also condemned Israel for restricting Muslim access to the site and for aggression by Israeli police and soldiers while also recognising Israel as the occupying power.

India, Myanmar agree for security coordination in border areas

India and Myanmar have agreed for close security coordination in border areas keeping in view the sensitivity of each other’s strategic interests.

In a press statement after holding delegation level talks with visiting State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, as a reliable partner and friend, India stands shoulder to shoulder with Myanmar.

The Prime Minister said, the two countries also agreed to enhance engagement in several areas including agriculture, power, and renewable energy.

Ecuador Cuts Internet of Julian Assange

Ecuador has cut off Julian Assange’s internet access because of his involvement in releasing hacked emails from Clinton aide John Podesta’s work account.

Assange has been encamped in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since being granted asylum.

If he leaves the Ecuadorian embassy the British police have promised to arrest him. He is editor-in-chief of the organisation WikiLeaks, founded in 2006.

PNB Housing IPO to Open on October 25

PNB Housing Finance, a subsidiary of state-run Punjab National Bank (PNB), has filed the papers with SEBI for its Rs 3,000 crore initial public offering (IPO).

The issue will open on October 25 and close on October 27. PNB Housing was the fifth largest housing finance company (HFC) in India by portfolio size. Housing loans constituted nearly 70 per cent of the company’s total loan portfolio.

MakeMyTrip Acquires Ibibo

Online travel company MakeMyTrip has acquired rival Indian travel company Ibibo. The combined entity will compete against rivals Yatra and Cleartrip.Founder Deep Kalra will remain Group CEO and Executive Chairman of MakeMyTrip and Co-founder Rajesh Magow will continue to remain CEO India of MakeMyTrip.

Founder and CEO of ibibo Group, Ashish Kashyap, will join MakeMyTrip’s executive team as a Co-founder and President of the organisation. MakeMyTrip will own 100 per cent of ibibo Group. ibibo Holdings will own a 40 per cent stake in MakeMyTrip, becoming its single largest shareholder and will contribute proportionate working capital upon the closing of the transaction.

MakeMyTrip brings its strong brand, robust mix of domestic and outbound hotels and packages business and strong position in the air ticketing business. ibibo Group, via its brand goibibo and redBus, comes with a strong presence in various fast growing travel segments including hotels, bus bookings and air ticketing.

Geeta Phogat appointed DSP in Haryana Police

Haryana Government today appointed International woman wrestler Geeta Phogat as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Haryana Police. Phogat, a 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medalist, was given the rank under the sports quota after the Cabinet headed by CM Manohar Lal Khattar, approved the state Home Department's proposal.

Jayasuriya Named as Brand Ambassador

Former Sri Lankan cricket skipper Sanath Jayasuriya was named brand ambassador of the third edition of the STAIRS School Football League (SSFL).

STAIRS is a not-for-profit organisation working towards sports, education, health and skill development of children across India. SSFL-3 will begin with league matches at over 15 different venues across four zones in Delhi.

S.P Yadav elected new President of Urology Society of India

S P Yadav has been elected as the new President of the North Zone of Urology Society of India. His tenure would begin from October 2017 for a period of one year. The announcement was made at the conclusion of a 3-day annual conference held under the auspices of the Agra Urology Association from 16 October to 18 October 2016.

13-yr-old boy wins Abdul Kalam IGNITE Award

A 13-year-old Chhattisgarh boy has won the prestigious APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE Award for suggesting an idea for a software to immediately register a vote given through an electronic voting machine. IGNITE is a national competition of original technological ideas and innovations by children up to class 12 or those out of school up to the age of 17 years.

2016 Wildlife photographer of the year

American photographer Tim Laman won the '2016 Wildlife Photographer of the Year' for his image 'Entwined Lives', showing a critically endangered Bornean orangutan making a 30-metre climb. Given for a story told in six images, the award judges photographs' story-telling power along with individual quality. The images will reportedly go on display at London's Natural History Museum from October 21.

Robert De Niro to receive Chaplin Award

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has named Robert De Niro the recipient of its 44th annual Chaplin Award, which honors major industry talents.  De Niro will take home the 2017 trophy for a four-decade acting career that stretches from early work including "Mean Streets," "Raging Bull" and "The Godfather Part II" to more recent projects such as "Silver Linings Playbook".

INS Tahiyu commissioned into Indian Navy

The 315-tonne INS Tahiyu is the sixth Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC) Car Nicobar Class vessel was commissioned and allotted to the Eastern Fleet of the Navy today at Vishakhapatnam.

The vessel was commissioned into the Indian Navy by the Flag-Officer-Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command Vice-Admiral H.C.S. Bisht. Built by Kolkata-based shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), INS Tahiyu is the 20th vessel in this class to be built by the shipyard.

AIR correspondent reports, it is an improved version of the earlier vessels and it can achieve a top operating speed of 35 knots per hour. The ship is fitted with three water jet propulsion systems, powered by marine diesel engines generating 2720 KW of power. The ship will be commanded by Commander Ajay Kashov and will have four officers and 41 crew members

TRAI Starts Discussion on Norms for M2M

TRAI has sought industry views on regulatory framework, spectrum, and service quality related requirements for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications.

According to some estimates, the number of connected devices in India is projected to touch about 275 million by 2020.

M2M communication can include a gas, electricity or water meter communicating information it records such as consumption level.

Comic book features stories of acid attack survivors

Two years after the release of a comic book on rape victims-turned-superheroes, the creators of 'Priya's Shakti' have come out with a sequel featuring acid attack survivors. Titled 'Priya's Mirror', the new series aims at changing attitudes that lead to gender inequality and violence. It is a three-dimensional augmented reality comic, which was launched at the New York Film Festival.

South African struggle icon Mewa Ramgobin dies at 83

South African struggle icon and husband of Mahatma Gandhi's granddaughter, Mewa Ramgobin, has died at the age of 83 after a prolonged illness. Ramgobin, the former President of the Natal Indian Congress which fought discrimination against Indians in South Africa, breathed his last at Cape Town hospital on Monday. Ramgobin was married to Ela Gandhi, a human rights activist and Mahatma Gandhi's granddaughter.

A former African National Congress member of Parliament until 2009, he was among the first supporters of the Release Mandela campaign. He was charged for treason in 1985. Ramgobin's commitment to the Gandhian cause saw him establish a Gandhi museum and library, organising the Annual Gandhi Lecture and educate people from different race groups on Gandhian philosophies.
