First BRICS Trade Fair and Exhibition begins in Delhi today
i. The first BRICS Trade Fair and Exhibition began in the national capital today, ahead of the BRICS political summit in Goa. The fair is a platform for respective BRICS countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to exhibit state-of-the-art technologies and advances made in industrial development.
ii. AIR correspondent reports that the theme of the trade fair is Building BRICS - Innovation for Collaboration. The focus of the three day fair is to showcase some of the best technologies available across BRICS nations to address BRICS countries main development challenges. It will also focus on Start-ups, to bring together young entrepreneurs from across BRICS nations on this platform.
'1st Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi to be ready by 2017 end'
i. The first Hindu temple in UAE's capital Abu Dhabi will be ready by 2017-end, a businessman overseeing the project said on Tuesday. The temple is being built on 20,000 square meters of land donated by the country's government. Hindus currently travel to Dubai around 100 km away to perform prayers. Notably, Indians constitute 26 lakh or 30% of UAE's population.
Muharram being observed in various parts of country today
i. Ashoora-e-Muharram is being observed in various parts of the country today. The day marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed and his companions, who laid down their lives for upholding truth, righteousness and justice in Karbala.
ii. Tazia processions are being taken out to mark the occasion. Majaalis or religious meetings highlighting the supreme sacrifice of Karbala Martyrs are also being held.
Sex ratio increased to 922 from 837: Haryana CM
i. Haryana Chief Minister on Tuesday said the sex ratio in the state has reached 922 as of September 2016. Earlier, the sex ratio in the state was 837, he added. During the Dussehracelebrations, a special aircraft also flew over the venue and threw pamphlets of the central government's 'BetiBachaoBetiPadhao' scheme.
Khattar raises slogan 'Haryana ek Haryanvi ek'
i. Raising the slogan 'Haryana ek Haryanvi ek', CM ManoharLalKhattar urged the people to help eradicate casteism for the development of the state. People should get opportunities on the basis of their qualification and not their caste, he added. The sex ratio in Haryana has increased from 837 to 922, Khattar further asserted.
India now the 12th largest holder of US govt bonds
India’s holdings of the US government bonds touched a high of $123.7 billion in July, making it the 12th largest holder, US Treasury Department's latest data showed. China and Japan were the top two countries with the largest exposure to American government securities at $1.22 trillion and $1.15 trillion, respectively. India added $6 billion in July, as per the data.

Aung San SuuKyi to embark on three day-visit to India
The State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San SuuKyi will pay a three day-visit to India from 17th of this month. The visit will take place immediately after the conclusion of the BRICS-BIMSTEC outreach summit to be held in Goa on October 16, to which the State Counsellor will lead the Myanmar delegation. The State Counsellor will be accompanied by several key Ministers and senior officials.
During her visit, SuuKyi will call on the President Pranab Mukherjee and have meetings with Prime Minister NarendraModi and External Affairs Minister SushmaSwaraj. She will also attend a business event during which she will interact with leading Indian business leaders on ways of bolstering bilateral economic and commercial relations.
The visit of the State Counsellor will provide an opportunity for the two sides to discuss issues of mutual interest and seek ways to further strengthen the close and friendly ties that exist between the two countries.
5.3 magnitude earthquake hits Lakshadweep in morning
A medium intensity earthquake, measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale, hit the Lakshadweep Sea region this morning. The National Centre for Seismology, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences, said the quake hit the Lakshadweep Sea around 4:01 AM at a depth of 10 kms. There were no immediate reports of loss of lives or property.
Australia raises $5.8 bn in the largest govt bonds sale
Australia, in its biggest-ever government bonds sale, raised 7.6 billion Australian dollars ($5.8 billion) in a debut offering of 30-year securities. “The eventual size was slightly larger than we expected, but does show good demand,” said an analyst. With this, the yields on benchmark 10-year bonds jumped to the highest since June.
WHO sending 10 lakh cholera vaccines to Haiti
The World Health Organization (WHO) is sending around 10 lakh cholera vaccines to Haiti, following the outbreak of the disease in the hurricane hit Caribbean nation. This comes after 13 people died and over 200 were infected with the deadly water-borne disease, according to officials. Notably, the death toll in Hati due to Hurricane Matthew has reached over 1,000.

Gold imports declined by 59% during Jan-Sep: Assocham
India’s gold imports declined by around 59% year-on-year to 270 tonnes between January to September, a report by industry body Assocham stated on Tuesday. Gold imports declined due to a prolonged strike by jewellers, among others, it added. Notably, India is the world's second biggest gold consumer with average imports of over 1,000 tonnes annually.

Bharat Petroleum plans to raise $500 million
Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) is planning to raise $500 million through a bond issue or an external commercial borrowing shortly, as per reports. The state-run refiner will use the money to refinance a bridge loan it took to buy stakes in Tass-Yuryakh and Vankor, two oil fields operated by Rosneft OAO, a Russian government-owned energy giant.
India's purchases of Iranian oil fell by 4% in Sep
India's purchases of Iranian oil fell by 4.1% to 5,52,000 barrels per day (bpd) in September, according to data compiled by Reuters. However, India's oil imports from Iran in the January-September period grew by 90.5% to an average 4,11,900 bpd the data showed. Average imports during the April-September period were the highest in at least 15 years

Jayalalithaa's portfolios given to ex-CM Panneerselvam
The portfolios held by Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa, who has been undergoing treatment in hospital, have been transferred to state finance minister O Panneerselvam, reports said. The change has been made on the advice of the CM, an official statement said. Notably, Panneerselvam has held the CM's office twice, both times when Jayalalithaa was ineligible to hold the office
Cosmetics brand CoverGirl appoints first male spokesperson
American cosmetics brand CoverGirl has appointed its first male spokesperson, 17-year-old makeup artist James Charles from New York. Singer Katy Perry, who is another CoverGirl brand ambassador, announced the news on Instagram, "Honored to have the pleasure to announce the very first COVERBOY, James Charles!" Charles will reportedly be appearing in advertisements for CoverGirl’s newest mascara.
Morocco king reappoints AbdelilahBenkirane as PM
AbdelilahBenkirane, the leader of Morocco's Islamic Justice and Development Party, has been appointed for another term as the country's prime minister. This will be his second term as Prime Minister of Morocco. Benkirane has been serving as Prime Minister in a coalition government since November 2011.
World's best-performing IPO this year has gained over 6,000%
The world's best-performing initial public offering (IPO) by the Hong Kong-based Luen Wong Group Holdings Limited is currently trading 6,715% above its offer price. The civil engineering company's stocks had jumped over 1,400% on the first trading day after its April IPO. Luen Wong had reported sales worth $41 million last year and is currently valued at $2.9 billion.
India ranked 97th out of 118: Global Hunger Index
Hunger levels in developing countries may have fallen 29% since 2000, but India was still rated as a country with ‘serious’ hunger levels in the 2016, shows Global Hunger Index that was released on Tuesday.
Despite improvements in hunger and nutrition over the years, India still has a long way to go before it is able to achieve the United Nations goal to end hunger by 2030
If hunger declines at the same rate as the report find it has since 1992, more than 45 countries—including India, Pakistan, Haiti, Yemen, and Afghanistan—will still have “moderate” to “alarming” hunger scores in the year 2030.
India ranked 97th out of 118 countries on the International Food Policy Research Institute’s (IFPRI) Global Hunger Index (GHI) in 2016, behind Nepal , Sri Lanka , Bangladesh, among others, but ahead of Pakistan and three other Asian countries. It was positioned at 80 out of 104 countries the previous year.
Ashwin reclaims top spot in ICC Test bowler rankings
Indian spinner RavichandranAshwin, who took 27 wickets in the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand, reclaimed the top spot in the ICC Test bowler rankings on Wednesday. Ranked third before the final Test, Ashwin leapfrogged pacers, James Anderson and Dale Steyn, to reach a career-best rating of 900 points. Notably, Ashwin is also the top-ranked Test all-rounder.

Veteran actor Ian McKellen was honoured at the UK Theatre Awards that took place in London for his individual contributions to British theatre. McKellen was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution to British Theatre prize.

European Space Agency to attempt Mars landing on Oct 19
The European Space Agency (ESA) will attempt to land its Schiaparelli landing module on the Martian surface on October 19. If successful, the ESA will become only the second space agency after NASA to land a spacecraft on Mars. The module, which was launched in March, will test the technology needed for Europe's 2020 rover landing on the Red planet.
New species of British Jurassic reptiles discovered
Scientists have identified a new species of extinct marine reptiles, that lived during the age of the dinosaurs, from fossils collected over a century ago. The newly identified species of British ichthyosaur, which resembled dolphins or sharks, were ocean dwelling reptiles. Ichthyosaur lived around 200 million years ago, a time when the UK was a small series of islands.

Actress-turned-author Twinkle Khanna has shared the first look of her second book titled 'The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad'. "My new book of stories that will hopefully make you laugh a lot and sigh a little," Twinkle captioned the picture. Her first book was 'MrsFunnybones: She's Just Like You and a Lot Like Me', which was published in 2015.

India clean-sweeps three match test series against New Zealand
India on 11 October 2016 won the three-match test series against New Zealand, 3-0. In the third and final test played at Holkar Stadium in Indore, India wrapped up the New Zealand innings at 153 in 44.5 overs claiming a huge victory by 321 runs.
The entire second innings of the visitors folded in just one-and-a-half sessions on Day -4 with an entire day remaining. The chief wrecker for India was R Ashwin who claimed 13 wickets in the match with six wickets in first and seven in the second inning. 41-yr-old wins women's road world c'ship time trial in Doha
Amber Neben, a 41-year-old veteran cyclist from the United States, won gold in the women's time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Doha on Tuesday. Neben registered a timing of 36 minutes and 37.04 seconds in the 28.9 kilometres long race. Holland's Ellen van Dijk was second, while Australia's KatrinGarfoot was placed third in the event.
Ironman World Championship triathlon 2016
Kailua-Kona in Hawaii hosted the 38th edition of the Ironman triathlon where 2,300 professional and amateur athletes gathered to undertake the 140.6-mile (approximately 226.3 kilometres) journey which includes cycling, swimming and running. The participants take part in a 112-mile (180.2 km) long cycling leg, a 26.2-mile (42.2 km) marathon and a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim.
Parmeshwar Godrej: A Style icon passes away
Parmeshwar Godrej, philanthropist and wife of Godrej group chairman Adi Godrej passed away in Mumbai on October 11 2016. She was 70. She was among India's foremost style icons and a gracious host.
