Maneka kicks off campaign to mark 11 Aug as Daughters' Day
· Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has kicked-off a social media campaign to mark Daughters' Day tomorrow by tweeting a picture with her daughter-in-law and grand-daughter.
· The entire week is being celebrated as Daughters' Week as part of government's 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' programme to check female foeticide, improve sex ratio and educate girls across the country.
· Maneka Gandhi has also invited people to tweet their pictures with their daughters-in-law and grand-daughters with #BBPDaughtersWeek.
Odisha Crime Branch rescues 1051 children in first phase of Operation Muskan-2.
· In Odisha, as many as 1051 missing children have been rescued by the Crime Branch during the first phase of Operation Muskan-2.
· The Operation Muskan which was started on 25th of July jointly by the Crime Branch in association with Women and Child Development.
· Special DG Crime branch B K Sharma said the next phase of operation will resume outside Odisha from today where police teams will go to 10 states. The second phase operation will end on August 24.
· The Odisha police have launched a month-long drive called ‘Operation Muskan’ each year in two phases since 2015.
PM launches Yaad Karo Kurbani celebrations at Azad’s birthplace in MP
· Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the Yaad Karo Qurbani celebrations today at the birthplace of freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad at Alirajpur in Madhya Pradesh to mark 70 years of Independence and 74 years of Quit India Movement.
· Briefing media in New Delhi, Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, all the Union Ministers will visit 150 places all over the country associated with the Indian freedom movement.
Government to set up committee to review e-commerce rules
· The government has decided to set up a committee to look into all issues including foreign direct investment norms pertaining to the fast growing e-commerce industry in the country.
· The committee will be headed by the NITI Aayog CEO. The other members in the panel includes officials from commerce and industry ministry and department of electronics and IT among others.
· Representatives from four states including Maharashtra and Karnataka are also members of the panel. Some e-commerce firms are facing taxation related problems in few states.
Parliament passes bill for easier debt recovery
· Parliament has passed a bill which empowers banks to confiscate security in the case of loan default, a development that assumes significance in view of the episode surrounding industrialist Vijay Mallya.
· The Enforcement of Security Interest and Recovery of Debts Laws and Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Bill, 2016, will not, however, apply to loans for agricultural land as well as student loans.
· The bill, approved by Lok Sabha last week and cleared by Rajya Sabha today, amends four laws -- Sarfaesi Act, DRT Act, Indian Stamp Act and Depositories Act.
· Replying to a debate on the bill, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley emphasized the need for "firmness coupled with fairness" in recovering bad loans.
First Solar commissions 130 MW of solar power plants in AP, Telangana
· First Solar Power India, the local subsidiary of the Nasdaq-listed First Solar, announced the commercial operation of 80 MW and 50 MW solar power plants in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Wednesday.
· The projects are part of the 260 MW project portfolio owned by First Solar in India.
· The two plants will collectively produce enough energy to power approximately 2,27,500 average homes in India and will displace 204 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, the company said in a statement.
Niti ties up with US EIA to set up portal on energy data
· Moving a step closer to set up a portal to host all the data related to energy sector in the country, Niti Aayog today inked a pact with US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
· The think tank is working to develop Indias energy data agency which would take 3-4 years to develop. The web portal will host all the data related to energy sector including oil & gas, coal, solar & thermal energy etc.
· On the occasion, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Anil Madhav Dave made a case for having a global energy data grid which clearly specified the use of clean and unclean (polluting) energy across the world to deal with the larger issue of climate change.
Railways decides to set up separate CSR cell for more involvement of corporate
· Seeking larger participation of corporates in the rail sector, railways have decided to set up a separate corporate social responsibility (CSR) cell to rope in (attract someone into doing something) more private players.
· Addressing a CII summit on CSR, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today said, "Railways have a clear cut policy on how CSR funds can be used. We are in the process of creating a CSR cell in railways and there are already many corporates tying up with us."
· Highlighting the scope of corporates' participation in railways, Prabhu said the massive footfalls on stations can be turned into big business opportunities.
PM Modi, Russian Prez Vladimir Putin to jointly dedicate Kudankulam Nuclear Plant Unit-I
· In Tamil Nadu, the first unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant will be dedicated to nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
· The first unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant attained criticality in July 2013. Till now more than 10,800 million units of power has been generated from the first unit.
· The 1000 Mega watt Kudankulam nuclear power plant was built with Russian expertise following a pact between the then Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Soviet leader Mikahil Gorbachev in November 1988.

INTERNATIONAL:
Thousands rally in Moscow against Russia’s new ‘anti-terrorism’ laws.
· In Russia, about one thousand agitators rallied at Sokolniki park in Moscow to protest a controversial new legislation.
· The set of counter-terrorism amendments initiated by lawmaker Irina Yarovaya has sparked outrage among rights activists.
· President Vladimir Putin signed the amendments into law last month. Protesters denounced the new legislation as part of the Kremlin’s efforts to stifle protest ahead of next month’s Parliamentary elections.
Russia, Turkey agree to restore ties after diplomatic rift.
· Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to work toward restoring full relations with Turkey, but said rebuilding trade ties will be time consuming.
· The visiting leader said the two countries will restore their yearly bilateral trade target of 100 billion dollars and will speed up the resumption of charter flights from Russia to Turkey.
· The Turkish leader also said he is ready to build a natural gas pipeline with Russia and negotiate a deal to construct Turkey’s first nuclear power plant.
· The two agreed to meet later to seek common ground over how to resolve the crisis in Syria.

BANKING NEWS:
Bank Of Maharashtra, United Bank of India Get New Chiefs
· Pawan Kumar Bajaj and Ravindra Prabhakar Marathe were appointed as managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of United Bank of India and Bank of Maharashtra respectively.
· Mr Bajaj is executive director in Indian Overseas Bank. He has been appointed as MD and CEO "based on merit-cum-preference", an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training said.
· Mr Bajaj has been appointed to the post up to September 20, 2018, the date of his attaining the age of superannuation, it said.
RBI to inject Rs 10,000 cr through OMO for liquidity crunch on FCNR payout
· In a bid to meet the perceived liquidity crunch due to upcoming redemption of $20 billion, RBI announced Tuesday of pumping Rs 10,000 crore by buying government securities.
· "Based on the current assessment of prevailing and evolving liquidity conditions, the Reserve Bank has decided to conduct purchase of Government securities under Open Market Operations for an aggregate amount of Rs 10,000 crore on August 11 through multi-security auction using the multiple price method," RBI said in a statement.
· Earlier in the day, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan said "as we have reiterated in the past, we do not see the FCNR(B) repayments as disruptive. With the preparation we have made, and good management, redemptions should go smoothly. More generally, the new liquidity framework announced in the April policy is being implemented. We have reduced some of the structural liquidity deficit."
NABARD sanctions Rs 26.06 crore to Punjab
· National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) sanctioned Rs 26.06 crore to the government of Punjab.
· The fund has been sanctioned for tackling (handling) waterlogging (saturation of soil with water) by constructing lift schemes in low-lying (lying close to water or ground level) areas, village ponds and other allied (united) works, said an official release.
· The project will reclaim 5,913 hectares of land in 87 villages of Muktsar and Fazilka districts.
· Once the project is implemented, farmers will be able to cultivate crops in the previously waterlogged areas after a long gap.

NHAI Signs MOU with IIT- Kharagpur for Research Project on Paneled Cement Concrete Pavements for Highways
· National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IIT-Kharagpur for research project on Laboratory and Field investigations on Paneled Cement Concrete Pavements for Highways.
· The duration of the research project is 3 years and NHAI have paid Rs. 1.25 crore for the project, excluding cost of construction of trial pavement section on NH.
· In India, the highways are generally paved with Bituminous (Asphaltic Concrete) material produced from refineries.
· However, it has been experienced that these highways are prone to damage and need frequent maintenance due to adverse climatic conditions such as rain and hot weather prevailing in the country.
Vodafone renews IT deal with IBM for 5 years
· India’s second largest mobile operator Vodafone has renewed its multi-million dollar agreement for IT infrastructure with tech giant IBM for another five years.
· It will support Vodafone India’s IT environment transition into its hybrid cloud, allowing the Telco to leverage (use (something) to maximum advantage) and integrate existing IT resources and data assets with private cloud environments.
Govt identifies 1.36 crore non-filers under NMS
· The Centre has identified 1.36 crore non-filers with potential tax liability under the Non-Filers Monitoring System.
· Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar said, the total number of the Income Taxpayers in the country for the last financial year was over five crore 24 lakh.
Robbers cut open roof of train coach, steal Rs 5.78 crore
· In Tamil Nadu, unidentified robbers have stolen soiled currency notes worth Rs 5.78 crore belonging to a few public sector banks from a train while transferring from Salem to Chennai.
· The soiled and damaged currencies worth Rs 342 crore have been sent to the Reserve Bank of India branch in Chennai by the Salem-Chennai Express.

Max Hypermarkets India appoints Rajeev Krishnan as MD
· Landmark Group today announcedthe appointment of Rajeev Krishnan as Managing Director of Max Hypermarkets India.
· He has taken over from Viney Singh who will continue on the board of the company as a Non-Executive Director, a company statement said.
· Rajeev has over 29 years of global experience withstrong retail and consumer background at Target, Wal-Mart and Mckinsey and Company, it said.
· Prior to this, he was Senior Advisor for Mckinsey's retail and consumer practices.
State Bank of India appoints Dinesh Kumar Khara as MD
· Dinesh Kumar Khara was today appointed Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI).
· He is presently working as MD and Chief Executive Officer of SBI Funds Management Pvt Ltd.
· The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Khara for a period of three years, extendable by two years after review of his performance, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training said.

Honoured to be paying tribute to MS Subbulakshmi at UN on Independence Day
· A R Rahman is honoured and humbled to have got the opportunity to pay a musical tribute to legendary Carnatic vocalist, late MS Subbulakshmi, at the United Nations on India’s 70th Independence Day.
· Speaking about the same, the Oscar-winning music composer told IndianExpress.com, “We all grew up with her charm. She was magic on stage. I can still remember her face. To have a character like that and to make people feel enticed through music was amazing. She was such a legend. I am honoured that 50 years after she performed at the UN, I have got the opportunity to pay tribute to her and India.”

China launches satellite to get accurate images of earth
· China on Wednesday launched a new high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging satellite which provides accurate pictures of earth with ability to photograph detailed scenarios of its specific areas.
· The satellite was launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in northern Shanxi Province.
· The Gaofen-3 satellite was launched off on the back of a Long March 4C rocket at 6:55 am (local time), according to the centre.
SPORTS NEWS:
Rafaela Silva earns Brazil's first gold medal by winning judo division
· From the favela to the top of the podium, Rafael Silva earned Brazil's first gold medal of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
· Silva, the country's first female world champion in judo, won the 57-kilogram division of the Japanese martial art on Monday as the crowd chanted “Rafa” and waved the green and yellow Brazilian flags.
· The 24-year-old Silva beat Sumiya Dorjsuren of Mongolia after two days of disappointment on the mat for Brazil.
OBITUARY:
Veteran writer-producer Panchu Arunachalam passes away
· Film producer, script and screenplay writer and lyricist Panchu Arunachalam, who introduced Ilayaraja as music director in his film Annakili and made more films starring Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth died here on Monday. He was 75 and is survived by his wife, two daughters and two sons.
· Panchu Arunachalam was son of late poet Kannadasan's elder brother and worked as his assistant for many years. "Kannadasan would dictate the songs to him," said director S.P. Muthuraman, who had worked with him in films including Priya, Engayo Ketta Kural, Aduttha Vaarisu and Guru Sishyan.
