Rajasthan now wants more daughters as child sex ration comes down
· In India, a social problem doesn't get attention it deserves till it reaches alarming proportion. In that sense, census 2011, that reported steep fall of 21 points in child sex ratio, proved a blessing in disguise for the girl child in Rajasthan.
· As per census 2011, child sex ratio (CSR) fell to sub 900 levels in Rajasthan. It was 909 in 2001 census but a decade later came down to 888. Out of 33 districts in the state, barely 10 districts had a CSR of 900 or above.
· Experts had been warning about skewed child sex ratio ever since 2001 census revealed yawning gap between number of girls and boys in Rajasthan. But no one took them seriously and the slide continued.
· A big shock was needed for people and the policy makers to acknowledge the impending catastrophe and census 2011 data was just what the doctor had ordered.
President inaugurates smart model village pilot project
· President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated a smart model village pilot project at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
· The President said in the last four years of his presidency this was the first time that he was having the privilege of interacting with several sarpanches and village-level functionaries at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
· He called it a landmark initiative to replicate the experience in transforming the President’s estate into a smart model township in five selected villages in Haryana.
Religious Texts to be included in Haryana School Curriculum
· Texts from the holy books of various religions will be incorporated in the curriculum of government schools in Haryana from this month, a minister said.
· The subject of moral education which includes religious texts from 'Bhagavad Gita' (Hindu religion), 'Quran' (Islam), the 'Bible' (Christianity) and 'Guru Granth Sahib' (Sikhism) will be introduced at a programme to be held in the Kurukshetra University auditorium on July 5.
· Haryana Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said moral education would be introduced as a subject for students from class six to class 12.
Assam to introduce file tracking system for transparency
· Assam government has decided to introduce "File tracking" mechanism as part of its effort to bring in transparency in governance and to allow common people track the position of a file.
· Once this new system is inducted in finance department, it will be replicated in all the departments of the government, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at a meeting with Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Guwahati.
Rs.5,000 cr. Central aid sought for Mission Kakatiya
· Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao requested the Centre to extend an assistance of Rs.5,000 crore for Mission Kakatiya programme being implemented for the last two years for restoration of minor irrigation tanks with an objective of water conservation and improving groundwater table.
· The State Government launched Mission Kakatiya programme last year with plans to restore over 46,500 minor irrigation tanks across the State, including the revival of chain-link tank system introduced by the Kakatiya dynasty.
Govt cancels Rs.200cr green fine on Adani: Reports
· As per reports, the Environment Ministry has withdrawn a Rs.200 crore fine imposed on Adani Ports & SEZ for damaging mangroves, and the local environment near the firm's Mundra Port.
· The fine was imposed by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government in 2013. Reports claim that this was the largest ever fine imposed on a firm for environmental damages.
INTERNATIONAL:
India's rank falls to 75 on money in Swiss banks
· According to Switzerland central bank's latest update, India's ranking fell from 61 to 75 this year in terms of citizens holding money with Swiss banks.
· The UK was on top with 25% of the total foreign money in Swiss banks, followed by the US with a 14% stake. Notably, India's current 0.1% share is lowest for the country since 1996.
Saudi to further expand China energy investments
· Saudi Arabia is keen on expanding its investments in China’s energy industry, according to its Energy Minister Khalid Al Falih.
· In an emailed statement following talks with China’s Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli and other officials in Beijing during a G20 ministerial meeting, Falih said he wanted to see new investment projects carried out by Saudi and Chinese sovereign wealth funds.
· The kingdom and China share interest in crude oil storage, mining, renewable energy and industrial development and there is room to grow bilateral trade in both energy and other hydrocarbons products such as petrochemicals, he added.
BANKING NEWS:
SBI secures over Rs 4,000 crore from World Bank for solar programme
· State Bank of India has inked agreements with the World Bank for a $625 million (around Rs 4,200 crore) facility to support grid-connected rooftop solar programme in the country.
· This will help SBI in financing grid connected rooftop solar photovoltaic (GRPV) projects at very competitive rates, the country's largest lender said in a statement.
· Through this initiative, at least 400 MW solar capacity will be created across the country.

MEA, MSDE sign pact to skill Indians seeking overseas jobs
· Ministries of External Affairs, and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship formalised an agreement today to implement Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PKVY), a scheme designed to offer skill development to Indians seeking jobs overseas.
· The MoU will institutionalise a framework to provide skill training to lakhs of Indians who go abroad to work every year.
· On the occasion, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said Indian emigrant workers, especially those who went to the Gulf through recruitment agents, were exploited due to lack of requisite skills.
New FDI rules: Liberty Videocon Gen Insurance to get Rs 310 cr
· Liberty Videocon General Insurance is headed for capital infusion of Rs 310 crore as its foreign JV partner is set to raise stake to 49 per cent, the limit under the revised guidelines for the insurance sector. This will come from the foreign partner, taking the holding to 49 per cent.
· The joint venture is between India's Videocon Industries and Liberty Citystate Holdings Pte, part of the US-headquartered Liberty Mutual Insurance Group.
· The JV company had launched its operations in India in 2013, with a current market share of 0.4 per cent. It looks to become one of the dominant players in the general insurance business.
India’s pharma industry expected to grow to $55 bn by 2020
· India’s rapidly growing pharmaceutical market is expected to grow to $55 billion by 2020 and emerge as the sixth largest globally by size, said Indian Ambassador to the US Arun Singh.
· Formally inaugurating the 34th annual convention of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) here Friday, he outlined the rapid growth of the health sector in India, particularly in pharmaceuticals.
· He said that the Indian sector had a competitive edge over others because its productions costs were significantly lower than that of the US and almost half that of Europe.
Alibaba launches system to remove fake products
· Chinese online commerce giant Alibaba launched 'IP Joint-Force System', an online system to track and remove fake products from its shopping platform.
· This comes after Alibaba Founder and CEO Jack Ma stated last month that counterfeit goods have no place on its platform.
· Notably, Alibaba was removed from the Washington-based International Anti Counterfeiting Coalition earlier this year.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
TRAI launches 'MySpeed' app to check internet speed on smartphones
· The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched a mobile app to help consumers check the internet speed on their smartphones.
· The "TRAI MySpeed" app will help its installers check their data speed on 3G/4G networks.
· The mobile application is expected to be officially launched on Tuesday, July 5; however, it is already available for download on the government-run Mobile Seva App store.
· The "MySpeed" app will work on any smartphone that runs on an OS above Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean).
SPORTS NEWS:
Chinappa enters top 10 in World Squash Rankings
· Current national champion Joshna Chinappa became the second Indian in history to enter into the top 10 in PSA World Squash Rankings.
· The 29-year-old climbed a rank after finishing as the runner-up in the HKFC International tournament in Hong Kong.
· While, Dipika Pallikal, who was the first Indian to crack the top 10 back in 2012, was ranked 19th globally.
India to host world’s first MMA League
· India will host the world’s first Mixed Martial Arts League from August 26 to October 1.
· The league, consisting of eight regional teams, will feature 72 bouts in the league stage, alongside two semi-finals, a third-place match and the final.
· Each team will comprise of 12 players, both male and female, with nine Indian fighters and three international players.
Novak Djokovic knocked out of Wimbledon
· Defending Wimbledon champion and world number one Novak Djokovic was knocked out of the Championship after a 6-7, 1-6, 6-3, 6-7 loss in the 3rd round.
· Djokovic lost to world number 41 USA's Sam Querrey who started the match as an underdog with 20-1 odds. The loss also meant an end to Djokovic's 30-match winning run in Grand Slam matches.
Michael Phelps Books Third Rio Berth with 100m Butterfly Victory
· Michael Phelps rallied for a victory in the 100m butterfly at the US Olympic swimming trials to give himself a shot at a fourth straight gold in the event in Rio de Janeiro.
· Phelps, fourth at the turn, came off the wall strong and powered home to win in 51.00sec, edging Tom Shields who punched his ticket to the Rio Olympics in 51.20.
· Phelps never threatened his world record of 49.82, set in 2009 at the tail end of the bodysuit era.
· But he got the job done in booking a third individual event in Rio, where he'll become the first US man to swim in a fifth Olympic Games.
Relief for Ailing Hockey Legend Mohammed Shahid as Sports Ministry Announces Rs 10 Lakh Grant
· The Union Sports Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for ailing Olympic gold medallist Mohammed Shahid, who is undergoing treatment for serious liver and kidney ailment at Medanta Medicity in Gurgaon.
· Shahid's medical expenses are being handled by his employers Indian Railways.
· It looks to be good news for the legend as till a few days ago, he was lost in oblivion and there was no one to help.
· Known for his artistic stickwork, Shahid was a member of the V Baskaran led Indian team that won its last gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
OBITUARY:
Holocaust survivor, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel dies at 87
· Activist and writer Elie Wiesel, the World War Two death camp survivor who won a Nobel Peace Prize for becoming the life-long voice of millions of Holocaust victims, died on Saturday. He was 87.
· Wiesel was a philosopher, speaker, playwright and professor who also campaigned for the tyrannized and forgotten around the world. He died at his home in New York City, the New York Times reported.
Former French prime minister Michel Rocard dies
· Former French Socialist prime minister Michel Rocard, hailed a "visionary statesman", died Saturday aged 85 his son Francis told AFP.
· Rocard served as prime minister for three years from mid-1988 under Francois Mitterrand, the two-term Socialist president who led the country from 1981 to 1995.
· Mitterrand appointed Rocard to succeed future centre right president Jacques Chirac after a period of unprecedented left-right "cohabitation".
· Rocard, noted for his pro-European stance, died in a Paris hospital, said his son Francis Rocard, an astrophysicist.
