India lost Bharat Ratna Dr. Kalam one year ago



·        Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, passed away on 27th July, 2015 while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong. Dr. Kalam, an inspiration to many, had once said, "Don’t take rest after your first victory because if you fail in second, more lips are waiting to say that your first victory was just luck."

Dr Abdul Kalam's statue unveiled in Rameswaram

·        A life-size statue of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was unveiled at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, on his first death anniversary.

·        The bronze statue was inaugurated by Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Manohar Parrikar.

·        After unveiling the statue, Naidu said, “Dr Kalam will live forever in our minds and hearts. His thoughts continue to be with us all the time."

Talks on with private players to provide Wi-Fi in whole Delhi



·        The Delhi government is in talks with private players and assessing various models to bring the entire national capital under Wi-Fi network in “a year or two”, an official said today.

·        Gajendra Haldea, a member of the Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDC), said the government should be more of an “enabler” in rolling out projects such as Wi-Fi.

·        DDC is an advisory body to the government. “We are in dialogue with various private players, if anymodel is affordable then the universal Wi-Fi can be rolled out in Delhi in a year or two,” he said at a seminar on ‘ICT Solutions for Digital and Smart Delhi’ organised by FICCI here.

Union Government issues notification for implementation of 7th Pay Commission

·        The Union Government has issued notification for the implementation of 7th Pay Commission. It was issued as per the Cabinet approval in June 2016.

·        With this issuance, 4.8 million central government employees and 5.2 million pensioners will get the increased payout from their August 2016 salaries.

·        Besides, Union Government has given CBSE chief Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi an additional charge of Chief of the implementation cell of the Seventh Central Pay Commission.

·        The 7th Pay Commission hike will result in increase in salaries of central government employees in the range of 7 thousand rupees to 18 thousand rupees per month.

Gujarat has cleanest railway stations, Bihar dirtiest, shows survey

·        The cleanest railway stations in the country are in Gujarat and the dirtiest in Bihar and UP, according to a passenger feedback survey on cleanliness carried out by the Railway Ministry, which says lack of sanitation at stations was the biggest area of concern for commuters.

·        Out of the 40 different cleanliness parameters passengers rated stench at stations as their top concern, followed by lack of dustbins and unclean platforms. The survey was conducted at 407 major railway stations and nearly 1,30,000 passengers took part in it. The report was released by the Railway Minister today.

FDI in pharma sector at Rs.4,975 crore in 2015-16

·        The pharmaceuticals sector received FDI of Rs.4,975 crore in 2015-16, down from Rs.9,052 crore in 2014-15, the Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

·        India’s FDI policy provides for 100% FDI under automatic route in greenfield pharma (involves start of new venture with construction of new facilities) and upto 100% under government route in brownfield pharma (involves purchase of existing facilities).

MHA sets up T V S N Prasad Committee to explore possible alternatives to pellet guns in Kashmir

·        The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has setup a seven-member expert committee for exploring the other possible alternatives to pellet guns as non-lethal weapons.

·        The Committee will be headed by T V S N Prasad, Joint Secretary in the MHA. It will submit its report within two months.

·        Other members of the committee: Atul Karwal (IG, CRPF), Rajeev Krishna, (IG Operations, BSF), Tushar Tripathy (DDG, Small Arms, Ordnance factory Board) and Naresh Bhatnagar (Professor at IIT, Delhi).

Parliament Passes Child Labour Amendment Bill, UNICEF Voices Concern

·        Parliament has passed the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2016.  The bill was first passed in Rajya Sabha and later in Lok Sabha during Monsoon session of Parliament.

·        It seeks to amend the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 to widen the scope of the law against child labour and stricter punishments for violations.

·        A week after the bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha, the Lok Sabha approved the measure that brings a raft of changes to a three-decade-old child labour prohibition law. The bill now goes for the President's assent before becoming law.

Defence Ministry unveils statue of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in Rameswaram

·        Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Manohar Parrikar unveiled a life-size statue of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at Peikarumbu, his burial site in Rameswaram Island.

·        Today is the first death anniversary of the former president and the Ministry of Defence has planned a host of events.

·        An exhibition named “Mission of Life” depicting the life of Kalam and his achievements towards nation building is set to be inaugurated.

·        Dr. Kalam passed away on July 27, last year while delivering a lecture at the IIM-Shillong in Meghalaya. He suffered a massive cardiac arrest. IIM-Shillong will organise a lecture series on making the world a better planet.

Concor opens new facility at Krishnapatnam port

·        A port side container facility of the Container Corporation of India (Concor) has been opened at Krishnapatnam Port.

·        The facility is expected to foster trade, boost industrial growth and help in development of the region, he added.

·        Concor had earlier entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to initiate three Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) in Visakhapatnam, Krishnapatnam and Kakinada.

·        The port had already acquired 140 acres at Krishnapatnam for setting up the MMLP and is in the process of acquiring 24 acres more.

MP passes Bill to discourage open defecation

·        Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday passed a Bill mandating that those aspiring to contest Panchayat elections must have toilets with flush in their homes.

·        The Assembly passed the Madhya Pradesh Panchayat Raj Evam Gram Swaraj (Samshodhan) Vidheyak 2016 through voice votes.

·        The state will now bar those who do not have a toilet in their house from contesting Panchyat elections under the 3-tier system in the state.

Odisha Govt. approves 3 Investment Projects worth Rs 874 crore

·        State Level Single Window Clearance Authority (SLSWCA) meeting held under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary Sri Aditya Prasad Padhi in secretariat conference hall accorded in principle approval to 3 investment projects of worth Rs. 874 crore.

·        Approving the projects Sri Padhi directed the concerned departments to facilitate grounding of these projects by quickening the procedures of various compliances, Chief Secretary also directed the Collectors of all districts to conduct District Level Single Window Committee (DLSWC) meetings regularly and plan for development of industrial ventures, small & medium enterprises in the district. Principal Secretary Industry Sri Sanjeeb Chopra presented the details of the investment proposals and outlined the issues for discussion.

Centre Approves Rs. 1601 Crore for Skill Development Programme in Jammu & Kashmir

·        Centre has approved Rs. 1601 crore for Jammu and Kashmir under skill development initiative Himayat to train 1.24 lakh local youths in vocational courses, Rural Development Minister Abdul Haq Khan said.

·        He said the proposals for implementing the program have already been invited online by DDU-GYK National Mission Management Unit, Union Ministry of Rural Development.

Mumbai to Delhi in less than 13 hours on Talgo trains

·        A Mumbai to Delhi train journey within 13 hours could come true in the first week of August.

·        As part of the final phase of trials, the nine-coach Talgo - the Spanish-manufactured high speed train will undertake three trips between Mumbai and Delhi between August 1 and 5.

·        The Western Railway (WR) sources said that the train will depart from New Delhi at 7.55 pm on August 1, and will maintain a speed of 130 kmph during the entire journey.

Centre, states agree to keep GST rates lower than current level of taxes

·        The Centre and states have agreed on the principle to keep Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates lower than the current levels of taxes.

·        Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley chaired the meeting of the Empowered Committee of state Finance Ministers in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the GST Bill which has been passed in the Lok Sabha but is stuck in the Rajya Sabha.

·        It was also agreed to include in the Constitutional Amendment Bill the mechanism of compensating states for any loss of revenue in the first five years of GST subsuming all indirect tax levies including VAT.

INTERNATIONAL:

Hillary Clinton makes history as first female presidential nominee

·        Hillary Clinton has been crowned as the Democratic presidential nominee, making history as the first woman to be picked by a major political party to run for the White House, and firing the gun on a fierce battle with Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.

·        The former first lady, New York senator and secretary of state, cleared the penultimate hurdle in her second run for president after Vermont, the home state of her opponent Bernie Sanders, carried her delegate count over the 2,383 threshold needed to secure the nomination at the Democratic convention.

·        There were huge cheers on the floor of the arena as Mrs Clinton officially became the nominee, ending what had been a bitter and unexpectedly close primary season running against Mr Sanders.

World Health Organisation declares Brazil free of measles

·        The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Brazil free of measles. The step was taken after no case of the disease was registered in 2015 on 26 July 2016.

·        From 1985 to 2000, Brazil saw no domestic cases of measles, although it broke out in 2013 in the northeastern states of Pernambuco and Ceara.

·        The WHO it had worked alongside the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) to eradicated the disease, with a joint investment of 335000 US dollar going towards measles control.The health agency also hired 165 dedicated nursing staff in Brazil.

BANKING NEWS:

Yes Bank gets Sebi nod for mutual fund, AMC business

·        Private sector lender Yes Bank said it has received an in-principle approval from the capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to sponsor a mutual fund and to set up an asset management company and a trustee company.

·        In a BSE filing, Yes Bank said it "has received an in-principle approval from Sebi to sponsor a Mutual Fund and to setup an asset management company (AMC), and a trustee company. The AMC and the trust company shall be set up as wholly owned subsidiaries of Yes Bank."

·        Yes Bank got the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) approval granted in October 2015.Yes Bank said it has already identified senior leadership and technology architecture to establish this business, and will commence operations within 12 months.

SBI Launches Debit Card-less Instant Money Transfer Facility

·        State Bank of India launched a payment system at its ATMs which will allow the account holders transfer money using mobile phone number as identifier, reported PTI.

·        The facility will enable a payment of up to Rs 10,000 from any SBI bank account and the recipient of this payment can withdraw funds instantly from an IMT-enabled ATM without using a debit card, the top lender said in a statement.

ICICI, Axis bank joins Swift's global payments initiative

·        Global payments leader SWIFT  said ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have become the first domestic lenders to sign up for its global payments innovation initiative, which already has over 70 other leading banks globally.

·        The initiative aims to enhance cross-border payments by leveraging Swift's messaging platform and global reach and in the first phase, the initiative will focus on business-to-business payments.

·        Designed to help corporates grow their international business, improve supplier relationships, and achieve greater treasury efficiencies, the new service will enable corporates to receive an enhanced payments service directly from their banks.

LeEco acquires US TV company VIZIO’s businesses for $2 bn

·        Chinese internet and technology conglomerate LeEco on Wednesday announced the acquisition of the hardware and software businesses of US TV company VIZIO Inc. for $2 billion to strengthen its presence in North America as part of its globalisation strategy.

·        According to the deal, the VIZIO hardware and software businesses will be owned and operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of LeEco, while the VIZIO data business — Inscape — will operate as a separate, privately owned company, LeEco said in a statement.

Niti Aayog panel recommends replacing MCI with National Medical Commission

·        A high-level panel set up by government think-tank Niti Aayog has recommended replacing the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a National Medical Commission.

·        This would end the much-criticised inspector raj, presenting a major reform of the medical education system and the profession .

·        The setting up of a new institution would require BJP-led NDA government to frame a new law, something which has been attempted several times in the past but no government has succeeded.

TCS, Infosys in Forbes India 'Super 50' list; Tata Motors, HUL dropped

·        Software majors TCSand Infosys pharma giants Sun Pharma and Lupin and private sector lenders HDFC Bank and Axis Bank feature in Forbes India's Super 50 List this year, while biggies like Tata Motors and HUL have been dropped.

·        The list, in its second year, also features 14 newcomers, including Infosys, Maruti Suzuki, Bharat Forge, Alembic Pharma, Gillette India, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Kansai Nerolac and LIC Housing Finance, among others.

·        Companies which have been dropped from the list include Tata Motors, Hindustan Unilever, MRF, Glaxo SmithKline Consumer Healthcare, Pfizer, Dr Reddy's Labs, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, HDFC and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

PM Modi to hold meeting with Niti Aayog on 15-year vision document

·        Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting on July 28 with the Niti Aayog to take stock of the progress made on the 15-year vision document and also share his views on the development strategy with the government's think tank.

·        The premier policy making body has been entrusted to prepare a 15-year vision document beginning 2017-18 fiscal, which will replace the Nehruvian five-year planning system followed for over six decades.

·        States are required to be roped in because they would also work on their 15-year vision, which will eventually help the Centre to prepare its roadmap for development in the country, the official said.

Indian-American to be recognised as emerging Democratic leader

·        Indian-American Raja Krishnamoorthi, a Democratic Congressional candidate from Illinois, will be introduced as one of the party’s emerging leaders during the ongoing Democratic National Convention.

·        Krishnamoorthi, 42, is among only two Congressional candidates to have been invited on to the DNC stage here as the party’s rising star or emerging leader.

·        Stephanie Murphy from Florida is the other Congressional candidate to be recognised by the Democratic party in this category.

East Bengal to honour Milkha Singh with Bharat Gaurav Award

·        Kolkata’s football club East Bengal has announced that the 2016 Bharat Gaurav Award, also known as Pride of India Award on 26 July 2016, will be conferred on legendary athlete Milkha Singh.

·        Singh will be honoured with the prestigious award on the East Bengal Foundation Day (1 August 2016). Along with the award, a cheque of 2 lakh rupees will also be presented to him.

·        Besides, special awards along with a cash prize of 1 lakh rupees each will be given to East Bengal players Shyam Thapa and Shyamal Ghosh.

Carnatic musician TM Krishna, social activist Bezwada Wilson among winners of 2016 Ramon Magsaysay award

·        Carnatic musician TM Krishna and social activist Bezwada Wilson are the 2016 Ramon Magsaysay awardees from India.

·        Other winners are Conchita Carpio-Morales from Philippines, Dompet Dhuafa from Indonesia, Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and Vientiane Rescue from Laos.

·        The award is bestowed on leaders from Asia for their selfless service to society. It is named after former Philippine president Ramon Magsaysay.

India's CSIR ranked World's 12th Best Government Institute

·        The 2016 report of the prestigious Scimago Institutions Rankings in the fourth week of July 2016 ranked the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) as the 12th Best Government Institutions in the world.

·        In 2016, the ranking of the premier institute jumped to 12th spot after being at 14th spot for three consecutive years. The overall global ranking of CSIR also improved from 110 to 99th position.

·        CSIR is the only Indian organization to have found a place among the top 100 global institutions.

Muttiah Muralitharan and 3 others to be inducted into ICC Hall of Fame

·        Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan, along with three others, will be inducted into the International Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame later this year.

·        Record-breaking off-spinner Muralitharan becomes the first Sri Lankan player to be inducted along with twice ICC Women’s World Cup winner and former Australia captain Karen Rolton, her compatriot Arthur Morris, a member of Don Bradman’s ‘invincibles’ and England’s George Lohmann, the 19th century fast bowler who took 100 wickets in just 16 Tests.

Parveen Rana to replace Narsingh Yadav for Rio Olympics

·        India named Parveen Rana as a replacement for dope-tainted wrestler Narsingh Yadav for Rio Olympics in the 74kg freestyle category on 26 July 2016. The Rio Olympics is scheduled to happen from 5 August to 21 August 2016.

·        Freestyle wrestler Rana had earlier won a gold medal in the 74kg category at the Dave Schultz Memorial Wrestling Tournament in USA in 2014.

Odisha announces Rs 60 lakh special incentive for Rio Olympic qualifiers

·        Odisha government has announced 60 lakh rupees cash special incentive for six sportswomen of the state who have qualified for the Rio Olympics on 26 July 2016.

·        The six sportspersons are sprinters Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda and four hockey players Deep Grace Ekka, Namita Toppo, Lilima Minz and Sunita Lakra, would receive 10 lakh rupees each.

·        Chief minister Naveen Patnaik has directed the Odisha Mining Corporation to pay the special incentive amount to the six sportswomen. He said that the incentive would be of immense help for them to prepare for the mega event.

Rio bound shot putter Inderjeet Singh fails dope test: NADA

·        India’s Rio Olympics bound shot putter Inderjeet Singh (28) has been tested positive for a banned substance. In the out-of-competition test conducted by National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), Inderjeet’s ‘A’ sample was tested positive for a banned steroid.

·        Inderjeet Singh had won a bronze medal in the 2014 Asian Games. He had won the gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in 2015. He had qualified for the 2016 Olympics by achieving qualification mark with a throw of 20.65 m in May 2015 at 19th Federation Cup.

Former diplomat Arundhati Ghose passes away

·        Former Indian diplomat Arundhati Ghose passed away on 26 July 2016 in New Delhi.The eminent diplomat headed the Indian delegation at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

·        Arundhati Ghose: Born on 25 November 1939, she studied at Cathedral and John Connon School.She graduated from Lady Brabourne College in Kolkata.

·        Thereafter, she studied at Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan.Later, she joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1963.She was the first Permanent Representative of India to the UN Offices in Geneva.
