India, Tanzania sign 5 bilateral pacts:
· India and Tanzania signed five bilateral agreements during PM Narendra Modi's visit to the African country.
· These include the extension of a $92 million line of credit by India for the rehabilitation of the water supply system in Tanzania's Zanzibar region.
· The four other agreements include MoUs on water resource management and visa waiver for diplomatic passport holders.
Army Chief to visit Australia on four-day tour:
· Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh will visit Australia on a four day tour. The visit assumes special significance in the light of enhanced military cooperation between the two countries.
· He will be visiting Australian naval ships Kuttabul and Adelaide, Headquarters Force Command, Headquarters Joint Operation Command, School of Military Engineering, Royal Military College, Land Network Integration Centre (LNIC) and Land Systems Division.
Government imposes anti-dumping duty on a chemical:
· The Revenue Department has imposed an anti-dumping duty of around $168.76 per tonne on the import of a chemical ‘Purified Terephthalic Acid’ used in the textile industry, from five countries, including China and Iran.
· It has been imposed for five years in a bid to protect domestic manufacturers. Anti-dumping duty is imposed on goods being imported below the market value.
2nd Anti-Drug Working Group meeting of Heads of Drug Control Agencies of BRICS concluded:
· The 2nd Anti-Drug Working Group meeting of Heads of Drug Control Agencies of BRICS countries concluded in New Delhi.
· The day-long meeting was organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
· Besides the Indian delegation, it was attended by officials and policy makers from the other BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa.
National Banana Research Centre to be set up in Bihar:
· Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on Saturday announced that a National Research Centre for Banana will be set up in Bihar.
· The announcement came while inaugurating ‘Horti-Sangam 2016’, an event where farmers from over a dozen states put fruits, vegetables, and flowers on display.
Ex-Prez Abdul Kalam's memorial to open on July 27:
· The memorial of late President APJ Abdul Kalam will open to the public on July 27, which marks his first death anniversary.
· Situated at Dilli Haat, it will display several of Kalam’s belongings like a rudra veena, spectacles, books, and research papers.
· Earlier, Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra had personally visited Kalam’s hometown in Tamil Nadu to fetch the belongings.
Nitin Gadkari visits US to attract billions of dollars in FDI:
· Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will pay a weeklong visit to Unites States to at attracting billions of dollars in Foreign Direct Investment. This is his maiden visit to the US in his capacity as Union Minister.
· The visit aimed at consolidation and expanding India’s relations with the US by improving bilateral cooperation in infrastructure sector.
· The minister will envisage investment opportunities in the Indian maritime sector and invite US investments in building ports, port-led industrialisation, coastal economic zones, and construction of new berths/terminals.
Government to give 5 Lakh to cross-border firing victims:
· The government has decided to award a compensation of 5 lakh to civilian victims of cross-border firing.
· It has also increased the compensation from 3 lakh to 5 lakh to the victims of terrorism or Maoist violence.
· This is subject to the condition that no employment has been provided to any family members of the victims by the state government.
World Bank to lend $290mn for Bihar's JEEViKA ll:
· The Centre and the Bihar government have signed a $290 million credit agreement with the World Bank under the state's rural development project 'JEEViKA-II'.
· The project covers 300 new blocks in 32 districts not covered by earlier schemes, World Bank said. It will organise rural poor into self-help groups, enabling them to access markets and financial services, the lender added.
KERALA Government announces Rs 12,000 crore anti-recession package:
· Kerala Government today announced a Rs 12,000-crore rescue package for the state in view of the Gulf crisis and recessionary trends in the state.
· Presenting the first budget of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF Government, Finance Minister Thomas Isaac said out of this package, around Rs 2,500 crore will be used this financial year.
· Rs 500 crore to expedite development of Azhikkal port. It has also ensured availability of money for development of Vizhinjam International Cargo Shipment Port, Thiruvananthapuram.
To help village retailers access B2B e-commerce Rajasthan ties up with Applicate IT Solutions:
· The Rajasthan government has joined hands with business-to-business (B2B) ecommerce firm Applicate IT Solutions to enable 35,000 e-mitra kiosks in the state for traders and retailers to procure products directly from manufacturers.
· The e-mitra kiosks launched in 2011 by the state government allows villagers to access government services such as licenses and passport services.
INTERNATIONAL:
NATO Summit 2016 concluded in Warsaw:
· The 2-day long NATO Summit concluded in Warsaw, Poland. It was the 27th summit biannual summit of NATO since its inception in 1949.
· The summit was attended by Heads of State and Heads of Government of NATO members including the USA President Barack Obama, Polish president Andrzej Duda and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
· Besides, the summit also saw the presence of Heads of Government of non-member States and organizations of NATO including Afghanistan.
China completes Asia’s longest single cave,double track tunnel:
· China has successfully completed Asia’s longest 16-km single tunnel that has double tracks for high-speed trains in northwest Shaanxi province of the country.
· The tunnel cuts through the Qinling Mountains, It is part of a high-speed rail line that links Xi’an, the provincial capital and Chengdu in China’s southwest Sichuan province.
· The 643-km long line has a running speed of 250 km per hour, will slash the travel time between the two cities from 16 hours to just three hours.
US' Charleston named World's Best City:
· Charleston, a city in the United States, has been named the World's Best City in an annual survey by the Travel + Leisure magazine.
· The survey has ranked Chiang Mai in Thailand and San Miguel de Allende in Mexico second and third respectively.
· Florence in Italy and Luang Prabang in Laos are among the other cities featured on the list.
US introduces bill to prevent Indian firms from hiring on H-1B, L1 visas:
· A bipartisan group of US lawmakers have introduced a bill in the House of Representatives which if passed by the Congress would prevent Indian companies from hiring IT professionals on H-1B and L1 visas.
· The 'H-1B and L-1 Visa Reform Act of 2016' would prohibit firms from hiring H-1B employees if they employ more than 50 people and over 50 per cent of their staff are H-1B and L-1 visa holders.
· Since the revenue model of a majority of big Indian IT companies is heavily dependent on H-1B and L1 visas, such a bill is likely to have a major impact on their businesses.
· But before the bill is signed into law by President Barack Obama, it must pass the Senate where it is yet to be tabled.
Pound becomes 2016’s worst performing currency:
· Overtaking the Argentine Peso as the biggest loser versus the US Dollar, the British Pound on Friday closed at $1.2941 to become 2016's "worst performer" among 31 major currencies.
· The third consecutive week of losses comes amid falling investor confidence following the 'Brexit' vote, analysts said. Earlier in the week, the Pound had touched a 31-year low of $1.2798.
Bosnia gets travelling 'War Childhood Museum':
· Bosnians whose childhood was affected by the 1992-1995 ethnic war have donated cherished personal items from the era to the War Childhood Museum, a touring exhibition aimed at warning others about the dangers of conflict.
· The travelling museum features over 2,800 exhibits, including toys, letters, photographs, diaries and humanitarian food packaging.
China launches drive to protect hospital staff:
· China has started a year-long campaign this month to stop violence targeting medical staff in overcrowded hospitals by angry patients.
· China has been facing issues like illegal trading of appointment tickets, long queues to see top doctors and corruption that increase the cost of medical care.
· Since 2013, China has reportedly faced 71,000 such instances of conflict that needed mediation.
Gambia's President announces child marriage ban:
· Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh issued a statement after Eid ul-Fitr celebrations banning child marriages in the country, where around 30% underage girls are married.
· He warned that anyone marrying a girl below 18 would be jailed for up to 20 years. The Imams and parents performing these ceremonies will also be punished, he added.
APPOINTMENTS:
Tathagata Roy sworn-in as Governor of Arunachal Pradesh
· The Governor of Tripura, Mr Tathagata Roy was sworn-in as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh in the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Itanagar.
· The oath was administered by the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ajit Singh.
· Mr Roy will discharge the function of the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh during the absence on leave of Mr JP Rajkhowa.
· Later, Dr. Joram Begi was also sworn-in as the Chief Information Officer of Arunachal Pradesh in the same event. The oath to the Chief Information Officer was administered by Mr Tathagata Roy.
Phiroz Vandrevala steps down as TCS director:
· Country’s largest IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced that its Non-Executive Director Phiroz Vandrevala resigned from the company with immediate effect.
· He had been a director on the TCS board since September 2007.
· However, Vandrevala will continue with this role as the Vice-Chairman and MD of Diligenta which is TCS subsidiary.
Housing CFO Ritesh Jain quits, opens new startup:
· Real estate platform Housing's Chief Financial Officer Ritesh Jain has resigned to launch his own startup named FlexiLoans.
· Co-founded with Manish Lunia and Deepak Jain, FlexiLoans is an online lending platform that provides loans to SMEs.
AWARDS AND HONOURS:
13-yr-old boy wins 'India's Got Talent' season 7:
· Suleiman, the 13-year-old flute player from Amritsar won the seventh season of the reality television show 'India's Got Talent'.
· A 50 lakh cash prize, a car and a trophy bearing the signatures of the judges Kirron Kher, Malaika Arora Khan and Karan Johar were handed over to Suleiman.
· The young flautist is a student of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.
SIDBI partners with Yes Bank for loan guarantee under World Bank scheme:
· SIDBI(Small Industries Development Bank of India) entered into a partnership with YES Bank to guarantee 75% of loans of up to Rs 15 crore extended to energy efficiency projects under the WORLD BANK initiative.
· To transform the energy efficiency (EE) market in India by promoting increased level of EE investments, particularly through energy service performance contracting (ESPC) delivered through Energy Service Companies (ESCOs).
· The (SIDBI) is the project execution agency whereas Yes Bank claims to be the first Indian lender to be em-panelled for the programme.
· SIDBI will extend the guarantee for securing up to 75 per cent of the loan amount of up to Rs 15 crore extended by the bank to MSMEs under this programme.
BUSINESS AND ECONOMY:
IMF cuts Eurozone growth forecast post 'Brexit':
· The International Monetary Fund has downgraded its growth forecast for the Eurozone stating that "negative impact of the UK referendum” will dent the region's economic recovery over the next two years.
· According to IMF, GDP in the Eurozone is expected to grow 1.6% in 2016 and 1.4% in 2017, as against the earlier estimate of 1.7% for both the years.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
DRDO inks MoA with IITs for Centre for Propulsion Technology:
· The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with IIT-Bombay and Madras to establish a bi-nodal ‘Centre of Propulsion Technology’ (CoPT) at the two institutions.
· The initiative is aims to achieve synergy between DRDO and IITs for channelising the research efforts for developing products and related critical aerospace technologies.
Scientists propose bacteria-powered 'windfarm':
· Oxford University scientists have shown that natural bacterial movement could be harnessed to power microscopic 'windfarms', which in turn may help in powering micro-machines such as smartphone components.
· Using computer simulations, the team demonstrated that the chaotic bacterial movement could be organised to turn cylindrical rotors in order to provide a steady power source.
Serena Williams wins record 22nd Grand Slam:
· Defending champion Serena Williams beat Germany's Angelique Kerber in straight sets to win her 22nd Grand Slam, equalling Steffi Graf’s record for most Grand Slam title wins in the Open Era.
· Serena defeated Kerber 7-5, 6-3, to win her 7th Wimbledon women’s singles title. This was Serena's first victory in a Grand Slam final in last four attempts
Williams sisters win their sixth Wimbledon title:
· Serena Williams and Venus Williams won their six Wimbledon doubles title after defeating Tímea Babos of Hungary and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-4.
· The American pair is now 14-0 in Grand Slam finals. This is the fourth time Serena has won both singles and doubles titles in a single year, while Venus has done it twice herself.
