Council picks up weed award

A council project that has seen the above ground eradication of the invasive Boneseed plant and mapped its distribution within the Eurobodalla has taken out a Weed Management accolade at the NSW Local Government Excellence in Environment Awards this week.

The Weed Management Award is sponsored by the NSW Department of Primary Industries and recognises innovative and effective programs that address noxious and environmental weeds in NSW and has shone a light on Eurobodalla Shire Council's success in containing and then eliminating the threat of boneseed invasion, moncler daunenjacke.

Council's Divisional Manager for Environmental Services, Deborah Lenson, says the Boneseed Eradication Project is part of a larger NSW and Victorian program and its success in protecting our area's highly valued biodiversity has relied on the involvement of a number of stakeholders, mantel moncler, including the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Landcare, moncler fabrikverkauf, local land owners and council staff.

"Maps created in 2006 revealed that outlier infestations of boneseed had the potential to invade most of southern, central and western NSW so the project's aim was to eradicate the weed," Ms Lenson said.

"To do this council first needed to better understand the plant's distribution in the landscape and determine the best control methods, moncler frankfurt."

She says boneseed is able to survive and adapt to nearly all environments including the ocean, winter kollektion, tablelands and mountains and the desert and has a significant impact on native flora and fauna.

"In particular,http://www.adonim.de/lebens.php?id=34, boneseed in Long Beach was threatening the forest understorey in Murramarang National Park that is so important for glider habitat. The park is one of the best intact forests in south eastern Australia and contains five out of the six Glider species in Australia."

Ms Lenson says council engaged the community in the Boneseed Eradication Project because it needed the help of residents to find and control more plants than council staff would have been able to do on their own.

"Our local Landcare groups in particular are passionate about their areas and were strongly engaged with the project. Long Beach Landcare in particular, led by the late Alison Baird, carried out inspections and controlled the boneseed found on council reserves, moncler jacken," Ms Lenson said.

She says council then carried out comprehensive boneseed control work in local suburbs and, given the seriousness of the threat, helped landholders eradicate the above ground plants.

"Everyone was on board one hundred percent and all above ground plants were destroyed and Murramarang National Park is no longer under threat of boneseed invasion," said Ms Lenson.

Council also contributed its data to the NSW and Victorian Boneseed Outliers Eradication Program. "The data we gathered during our local control program was fed back into a higher level dataset because we wanted to ensure that state and federal agencies could use the information to make well informed decisions around future weed control investment programs," Ms Lenson said.

She would like to congratulate council's Invasive Species Supervisor, Paul Martin, and all the members of council's environment team on winning the NSW Local Government Excellence in Environment award.

"Thanks to their consistent, timely inspections, moncler online shop men, education programs, control and collection and the sharing of information along with the partnerships they developed, jacke moncler, this project has been a great success. This recognition is greatly deserved," Ms Lenson said.

Until the seed bank in the soil is completely extinguished, all partners in the Boneseed Eradication Project continue to work to ensure that boneseed remains under control.
