BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Jamestown lawmaker is pushing a measure that would exempt dairy and swine operations from North Dakota’s anti-corporate farming law.
Sen. Terry Wanzek also is a farmer and grew up milking cows. He says dairy and hog farm operations are in serious decline in North Dakota.
Wanzek says his bill is aimed at saving those industries.
The legislation would allow domestic corporations and limited liability companies to operate dairy and hog farms, as long as the operations don’t take up more than 640 acres of land.
North Dakota’s anti-corporate farming law dates back to 1932. It now allows corporations with as many as 15 shareholders to own farms or ranches, as long as the shareholders are related.

Neither gave a reason for resigning.
Other recent resignations has led to the filling of those Foster County positions.

The North Dakota-based group assists family farmers in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and eastern Montana.
Farm Rescue sets up camp on the farms of injured or ill farmers, doing their planting or harvesting work rather than handing out money. The group also assists farmers who have been victims of natural disasters.
Volunteers help the farmers plant and harvest up to 1,000 acres of crops free of charge.
The nonprofit was started in 2006 and it has helped hundreds of families.
The organization says priority will be given to applications received by March 31.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – A 30-year-old Dickinson man is dead following a head-on crash in western North Dakota.

Authorities have not publicly identified the man.
The 47-year-old driver of the semi-tanker was not injured.

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota State College of Science is seeking more help from the state crime bureaus in North Dakota and Minnesota as campus police continue investigating the death of a student.
The college has issued a statement saying it’s the “appropriate next step” in the investigation into the death of 20-year-old Andrew Sadek. He disappeared last May and his body was found in the Red River in late June. An autopsy concluded he died of a gunshot wound to the head.
Sadek was working for a regional drug task force as a confidential informant a few months before he died. His mother, Tammy Sadek, believes he was murdered.
An independent state review concluded that the drug task force handled its dealings with Sadek properly.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Supreme Court says a man whose record includes 47 felony convictions cannot file an appeal from a 26-year-old case.
Edward Waslaski Jr. pleaded guilty in 1988 to 39 counts of burglary in various counties in North Dakota and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Waslaski says his lawyer advised him to plead guilty to multiple charges to ensure a better outcome for a group of co-defendants, rather than look out for his individual interests.
The court said in a ruling released Thursday that a judge was right to throw out Waslaski’s application for appeal.
Waslaski pleaded guilty in 2007 to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A contingent of Fargo public officials is meeting with lawmakers in Bismarck about flood control money for North Dakota’s largest city.
A bill introduced at the start of the session had called for Fargo to receive $120 million that could be used on building dikes and levees within the city limits. But Fargo’s acting mayor says that funding has been put on hold because of the revised budget projection due to slumping oil revenues.
Mayor Tim Mahoney says there’s a lot of “running around out there” because lawmakers aren’t sure how much money they can put into the bill to help Fargo with its chronic flooding problem.
Mahoney says he believes it’s still possible to break ground in 2016 on a nearly $2 billion Red River Valley diversion project.
NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) – Truckers who don’t use a new $25 million highway bypass around New Town face the prospect of a $1,500 fine.
The city has begun enforcing the new ordinance, to crack down on truck traffic. City Auditor Eileen Zaun says a city official recently observed 45 trucks go through the city in less than half an hour.
Signs have been placed at both ends of town designating the bypass and warning truck drivers about the penalty for not using it.
The ordinance applies to trucks whose weight exceeds 35,000 pounds, with or without a load. Trucks delivering products into the city are exempt.
Construction of the 3.2-mile bypass that diverts truck traffic around New Town’s Main Street began last spring and wrapped up last fall.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Cybersecurity is the top item on President Barack Obama’s agenda today. PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) – The Taliban are claiming responsibility for an assault on a Shiite mosque today in northwestern Pakistan that killed 19 people and wounded more than 40. BERLIN (AP) – Germany is reporting a spike in measles cases. Authorities in Berlin say the increase has been traced to unvaccinated refugees but at least two measles cases appear to have come from the United States. Berlin has recorded 468 cases of measles this year, more than the rest of Germany had during all of 2014. Measles has since spread to Berlin’s non-refugee population, partly because immunization rates among over-45s are low.
