GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A fire in a Grand Forks apartment injured one person and displaced more than a dozen other residents of the building.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze in the sixth-floor apartment Monday evening. Officials say fire damage was contained to the apartment, but there was smoke and water damage throughout the sixth floor and water damage to apartments below where the fire started.

The occupant of that apartment was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries. At least 14 other residents of the building were displaced due to the damage. The Red Cross was helping them find temporary lodging.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) – Moorhead police are asking for help in identifying a vehicle that was spotted on surveillance video near the area where the body of slain North Dakota State University student Thomas Bearson was found last September. Police have not been able to identify the make or model of the car, which spent a couple of minutes in a parking lot next to a recreational vehicle store in Moorhead on the evening of Sept. 20.  Bearson’s body was found in the RV lot on Sept. 23.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A West Fargo woman who pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in the death of her 4-day-old son has been ordered to spend about two months in jail. Authorities say Reanne Pederson’s baby died a day after the 32-year-old woman fell asleep while breastfeeding him in June 2014. She told authorities she likely suffocated the boy. Pederson pleaded guilty last November.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – An inmate at the North Dakota State Penitentiary is accused of threatening a federal judge.

Robert Lee Johnson is charged with one count of mailing threatening communications. He’s scheduled to make his first court appearance later this month.

Authorities say Johnson sent a letter to U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson that threatened Erickson and his family. The letter was postmarked on June 16.

A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A 57-year-old Sioux County man accused of sexually assaulting two young girls is facing multiple charges in federal court.

Jonathan Stretches of Cannon Ball made his initial court appearance Monday. He’s charged with five counts of sexual contact and one count of aggravated sexual assault in connection with incidents involving two minors between 1994 and 2005.

According to court documents, the first three counts allege he inappropriately touched one of the girls on three separate occasions. The documents show the three other counts involve another girl, including one count alleging Stretches attempted to have sex with her and threaten death or serious injury to the girl’s mother.

Stretches is set to return to court Wednesday. It wasn’t immediately known if he has an attorney yet.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The average retail price of a gallon of gasoline in the Dakotas has crept back above the $2 mark.

GasBuddy.com reports that the average price in North Dakota has risen nearly 11 cents per gallon in the past week, to $2.08. In South Dakota, the average price has risen about the same, to $2.02.

Officials cite rising oil prices and worries about worker strikes at refineries.

The national average increased nearly 13 cents per gallon over the week, to $2.17. But that’s still more than $1.10 cheaper than last year at this time.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. is asking North Dakota regulators to approve a natural gas rate increase.

MDU is seeking a 3.4 percent overall rate increase, which would raise $4.3 million a year more than current rates. If approved by the Public Service Commission, it would increase the monthly bill of residential customers by an average of about $3.50.

The utility says it needs the rate increase to cover the cost of increased investment in natural gas facilities. MDU’s natural gas investment in the state is projected to be $212 million by the end of the year, up 15 percent from last year.

MDU serves about 105,000 natural gas customers in 74 North Dakota communities.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Utah woman who worked in the North Dakota oil fields has filed a federal lawsuit against her former employer, alleging gender discrimination and equal pay violations.

Cindy Marchello, of Ogden, Utah, filed the lawsuit Monday in federal district court in North Dakota.

Marchello started working as a pump operator for Texas-based C&J Energy Services Inc. in October of 2012. She says her manager later gave her a desk job because it was “too dangerous” and “too cold” for her in the field.

Marchello also alleges that she was paid less than her male counterparts and that her employers threatened to fire her if she spoke out.

Marchello is being represented by Minneapolis-based Halunen Law.

A representative from C&J Energy Services didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

UNDATED (AP) – A person with knowledge of the talks says the Sacramento Kings and George Karl are discussing a deal for him to take over as coach. If hired, Karl could coach the Kings in their first game back after the All-Star break on Feb. 20 at home against Boston.

Tyrone Corbin is the Kings’ interim coach. Corbin has been told he will coach the Kings in their final two games before the All-Star break: Tuesday at Chicago and Wednesday at Milwaukee.

UNDATED (AP) – The San Diego Padres have landed free agent pitcher James Shields. The right-hander has agreed to a four-year, $75 million contract with the Padres. Shields helped Kansas City reach the World Series last season, going 14-8. The Royals made an attempt to retain Shields but their $15.3 million qualifying offer was rejected by the former All-Star.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has established an internal committee to review stadium options in Los Angeles and coordinate any possible move to Southern California. The move was outlined in a league memo obtained Monday by The Associated Press. The memo emphasizes that the league, not a single team, controls when and where a move can take place.

It comes about a month after a development group that includes a company controlled by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke (KRAHN’-kee) announced plans to build an 80,000-seat stadium in the Los Angeles suburbs.

The proposal that envisions a stadium rising on the site of a former horse track in Inglewood once again raises the possibility that Los Angeles could get another NFL team after a two-decade drought.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – A path is about to open that could lead to the first war vote in Congress in 13 years. It begins when President Barack Obama asks Congress for new war powers to counter the Islamic State group and that could happen as early as today. The debate on Capitol Hill will attempt to find a balance between lawmakers who want broad authority and others who are wary of another drawn out conflict.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) – A U.S admiral says he envisions the future of naval warfare consisting, in part, of precision lasers blasting drones out of the sky and electromagnetic cannons hitting targets from 100 miles out. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert says such weapons promise to be cheaper to use than conventional armaments.

YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AP) – Residents in northern Cameroon say Boko Haram (BOH’-koh hah-RAHM’) extremists had an active weekend in their country. They say seven hostages were killed and eight young girls were abducted by militants from neighboring Nigeria who hijacked a bus. Boko Haram has intensified attacks against countries providing soldiers to a multinational military force.

BOSTON (AP) – Non-emergency state workers who live in the hardest hit areas of Massachusetts have another snow day and the mayor of Boston says schools remain closed today as New England waits for the latest major storm to clear out. More than two feet of snow fell in some spots and the Boston-area public transit system was crippled. Many communities don’t have any place to dump the snow.

PARIS (AP) – Two French women now 20 years old will be compensated for being switched at birth and given to the wrong parents. A court has ordered a private clinic in Cannes (kan) to pay out 400,000 euros ($450,000) – each. It’s part of a 1.88-million euro payment to members of the two families including 300,000 euros for each of three parents involved and 60,000 euros for three brothers and sisters.
