BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakotans enjoyed a balmy New Year’s holiday, but the pleasant weather is coming to a quick end.
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and advisories for the northern and east central parts of the state from this afternoon into Saturday morning. Some areas could see up to 10 inches of snow as a system pushes in from the Canadian Rockies.
The storm also will bring some icy temperatures. Highs in the north on Saturday could be as cold as minus 10 degrees, and wind chills could drop to minus 40.
That’s in stark contrast to New Year’s Day on Thursday, when high temps around the state were in 20s and 30s above zero.
Forecasters say the extreme cold will stick around into next week.

(CSi GasBuddy.com) Hard to believe, but the national average price of gas was more than $1 per gal. higher at the start
of 2014 ($3.29) than it was on the last day of the year. On Jan. 1, 2014, WTI crude oil was
trading at $98 per barrel and gas below $3 was found in just a handful of states.
When GasBuddy issued our 2014 Fuel Price Outlook we said the year “will find more consistent
downward pressure on U.S. gas prices than any year since the Great Recession (2008).” Of
course, nobody anticipated that crude oil prices would plunge so far for so long and that 2014 gas
prices would fall to 2009 levels.
Spring-to-Summer Ascent
Like clockwork the first quarter brought rising fuel prices associated with the annual transition
from ‘winter blend’ gas to the lower Reid Vapor Pressure (cleaner-burning) gasoline mandated
by the EPA. By the end of March the national average stood at $3.53 per gal., and the price at the
pump continued to move higher as gasoline supply declined and ethanol prices weighed on
gasoline prices. Ethanol prices through March stood well higher than wholesale gasoline prices,
making the required blending of ethanol even more expensive.
By late April prices in Hawaii reached $4.34/gal.; California was at $4.21/gal.; Illinois averaged
$3.90/gal., Connecticut was at $3.85 and New York was just a penny behind at $3.84/gal.
Motorists in the Great Lakes had their share of headaches too due to a refinery glitch at BP’s
Whiting, IN refinery, and a glitch at ExxonMobil’s Joliet refinery.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Minot man who’s used to pulling others from life-threatening situations got some quick help from two fellow anglers when his four-wheeler went through the ice.
Keith Thornby has worked at Minot’s Trinity Hospital and also served on an ambulance crew.
He was pulling an ice house with an all-terrain vehicle at Douglas Bay on Lake Sakakawea last weekend when it went through the ice after sundown.
Thornby estimates the water was 7 to 10 feet deep.
One of the two anglers he was out with was stepson Brandon Mosser, of Minot, who crawled on the ice and tossed Thornby a tow strap. Then he and a friend pulled Thornby to safety.
He was soaked and cold but OK.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Two University of North Dakota researchers are getting a grant of nearly $1.5 million over five years to study drugs used to treat HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
The money from the National Institutes of Health is going to UND professor Jonathan Geiger and assistant professor Xuesong Chen.
Earlier this year, the two researchers were awarded a five-year, $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for similar work.
The UND medical school calls it a “huge achievement,” saying it’s hard enough to get one grant from the National Institutes of Health, let alone two.
ROLLA, N.D. (AP) – A veteran North Dakota law enforcement officer was enjoying his first day of retirement yesterday.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Researchers are using a replica of a fully stocked bar as a tool in testing the safety of a new drug designed to help heavy drinkers say “when” sooner than usual. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health say they believe that sitting in the dimly lit bar-laboratory should cue the volunteers’ brains to crave a drink, and help determine if the pill they’re testing counters that urge.
