Jamestown (CSi) The University of Jamestown’s next production is Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol,” the classic tale of redemption and Christmas, November 6-8, 2014 at the Reiland Fine Arts Center.

On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 the director Mike McIntyre said the cast of 50 people, along with 25 or so in the orchestra, is one of the largest productions ever staged at the University.

There are 20 roles played by children from the community, from elementary school to high school.

The Musical Director is Richard Walentine, with Rena Haatvedt the Director of Choreography.

Featured songs are by Alan Menken, who wrote the music for many successful Disney animated movies in the 1990s like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.”"

UJ senior,Jacoby Holte was also on the show, he plays Ebenezer Scrooge, the stingy old man who is transformed into a kinder soul after being visited by three spirits on Christmas Eve.

Also joining us was junior, Sydney Johnson who plays The Ghost of Christmas Past.

Chris Koppinger, another UJ student, is playing Bob Crachit, Scrooge’s clerk and father of the Crachit family, including Tiny Tim, played by Jackson Walters.

Holte said he hasn’t done a lot of theater work in the past and was a bit surprised he got one of the lead roles. Holte was the lead in the university’s production of “Carousel” last year.

Holte said the biggest challenge he has faced is consistency. He said playing an older man with an accent and trying to convey more than just the surface emotions of what Scrooge is going through has been tough.

McIntyre added that Holte has a dynamic voice, which makes it possible for him to cover different demands as to what certain roles he might ask for.

Performance are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, November 6-8/

Tickets may be purchased at the Reiland Fire Arts Center box office, room 130, from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday by calling (701) 252-3467, ext. 5435, or by email at tickets@uj.edu.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Street Department Crews along with the City Forester will be conducting annual tree branch clearing in the Northeast section of the city (beginning November 3, weather permitting.)

Once the Northeast is finished Street Dept. Crews will then move to the Southeast section of the city. Tree and shrub branches that are overhanging streets and alleys in these areas will be removed to prevent interference with traffic and City maintenance equipment in accordance with City Ordinances.

Jamestown City Forester, Doug Wiles says,it is the homeowner’s responsibility to maintain trees and shrubbery. When this responsibility is neglected, it becomes the duty of the City to clear overgrowth that threatens public safety. In some cases, the only answer is removal of the tree or shrub. This is a clearance procedure and should not be mistaken for a complete pruning of the tree. If a complete pruning is needed, have your trees pruned by a City licensed local tree service.

If citizens of Jamestown have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Doug Wiles, City Forester, at City Hall by phone at 252-5900. If the Forester is unavailable, please leave a detailed message with your contact information.

The section of the city code pertaining to trees is on line at

Valley City (CSi) The Valley City Planning and Zoning committee is in the process of re-writing the zoning ordinance for Valley City.

Those may include proposed changes the public may want concerning the residential housing and commercial zoning ordinance. Other issues addressed recently were parking issues, temporary storage units, sidewalks and others.

Day says more meetings will be held but residents and business owners can make their opinions known online at  www.valleycitytomorrow.com

NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) – A California man is dead following a rollover accident in western North Dakota.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says 54-year-old Jack Coombs, of Azusa, California, died Saturday after he was ejected from a 1996 GMC Yukon. Authorities say Coombs was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Patrol says Coombs was traveling southbound on 88th Avenue Northwest, about 9 miles south of New Town, when he lost control of his vehicle, ran off the roadway and overturned.

Authorities say Coombs died of injuries sustained in the incident.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 58-year-old inmate has died at the Cass County Jail.

Sgt. Tara Morris with the sheriff’s office says Charles William Bliss died around 6:48 a.m. Sunday. Bliss was being housed at the jail on a fugitive warrant from the state of Washington.

Morris says Bliss drew the attention of a corrections officer after breakfast and indicated he was having medical problems. Bliss became unconscious while jail staff initiated emergency procedures and called 911.

Emergency personnel responded to the jail, but their lifesaving measures were unsuccessful.

Morris says all evidence indicates that Bliss’s death is related to a medical condition. An autopsy is being conducted by the state’s medical examiner.

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting in the investigation.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man says he will plead guilty to an illegal ammunition charge.

Jerome Fletcher, of Minot, is charged in federal court with possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. Authorities say he had 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition in his possession in November 2013.

Fletcher has an extensive criminal record that includes convictions for robbery, assault and possession of methamphetamine.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Sentencing has not been scheduled.

A defense attorney was not available for comment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Historical Society is slated to get an update on repairs to the boyhood home of famous band leader Lawrence Welk.

The group is slated to get the report on Monday.

The group voted in January to buy the Strasburg homestead from Welk’s nieces. But a final sale price was not negotiated.  The purchase agreement also was contingent on negotiated repairs being made to the property, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Legislature last year included $100,000 in the Historical Society’s budget for the purchase but lawmakers stipulated that repairs must first be made.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A revamped North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum opens to the public Sunday.

The opening coincides with the state’s 125th statehood anniversary. The revamped center includes a new theater, cafe and outdoor space. State lawmakers approved about $40 million for the 97,000-square-foot expansion in 2009. The historical society raised an additional $12 million.

Two of the museum’s galleries are slated to open Sunday.

The Governor’s Gallery features traveling and temporary exhibits. The gallery’s first display explores how the lives of rural North Dakota residents changed when they went from using kerosene lamps to having electricity.

The Inspirational Gallery shows the history of the state through six different themes. It includes interactive displays, a full-size grain silo and objects used at Native American boarding schools.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot officials are taking aim at backyard target shooting.

A City Council committee has directed the city attorney and police chief to draft an ordinance restricting projectiles. The Minot Daily News reports the ordinance would restrict the use of arrows and BB pellets to qualified shooting ranges.

Police Chief Jason Olson says it’s a matter of public safety. He says the city had an ordinance at one time but it was eliminated years ago for unknown reasons.

Council member Miranda Schuler opposes an ordinance. She cites the concerns of people who safely target practice in their yards.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck-based company is facing fines of $2,500 per day for a Main Street construction project in Williston that is behind schedule.

The  $10.7 million project was bid in May and was to be completed on Nov. 1. It got a late start and Knife River Corp. says it is several weeks behind.

City Engineer Bob Hanson says two weeks of good weather is needed for the project to wrap up.

The project has detoured people around the commercial and civic heart of Williston. Business owner Tammi Dickerson says she is “truly disgusted” with the delay.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A quarterly state auction for oil drilling rights on North Dakota state land is being held at the state Capitol in Bismarck.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota wildlife officials this fall are continuing a surveillance program for chronic wasting disease.

The Game and Fish Department will sample hunter-killed deer from 10 hunting units in the central part of the state and one in the southwest for the disease that affects the nervous system of members of the deer family and is always fatal.

There’s no evidence the disease can be transmitted naturally to people or livestock.

Moose and elk killed in the state also are eligible for testing. Hunters should bring those heads to a Game and Fish office.

A list of drop-off sites for deer heads can be found at http://www.gf.nd.gov .

Another quarterback record fell in Pittsburgh. Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH’-lis-bur-gur) threw six touchdown passes for the second consecutive week while going 25 of 37 for 340 yards in Pittsburgh’s 43-23 win over Baltimore.

Roethlisberger is the first quarterback in NFL/AFL history to throw for 12 touchdowns over a two-game stretch, breaking the record of 11 set by Tom Flores for Oakland in 1963 and matched by Tom Brady seven years ago.

UNDATED (AP) – Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans tore his right Achilles tendon in Philadelphia’s 31-21 win over the Texans in Houston. That’s according to a person familiar with the injury.

NASCAR…

FORT WORTH, Texas, (AP) – None of the eight championship contenders were able to clinch one of the final four spots in the Chase during Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway. Jimmie Johnson won his third consecutive Texas fall race after already being eliminated from the Chase last month. He emerged from a frantic finish, the second attempt at a green-white-checkered finish after his teammate and Chase contender Jeff Gordon spun out from the front after contact with Brad Keselowski.

GOLF…

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Tom Pernice (pur-NEES’) Jr. birdied the fourth playoff hole to beat Jay Haas in the Champions Tour’s season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The 55-year-old Pernice got up-and-down from the left bunker on the par-5 18th, holing a 6-foot putt after Haas made a 12-footer for par. Pernice capped his 3-under 67 with a 6-foot birdie putt on 18 to match Haas at minus-11.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) – Inbee Park has won the LPGA Taiwan Championship for her third victory of the year.  The world’s top ranked player shot a final round 1-under 71 to finish at 22-under. That’s two shots better than Stacy Lewis, who finished with a 69.

UNDATED (AP) – Mississippi State and Florida State remain 1-2 in the newest Associated Press college football poll, but Auburn climbed a notch to third with Saturday’s win over Mississippi. Alabama slips to fourth, followed by Oregon. TCU makes a four-step climb to No. 6 following a last second win over West Virginia.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL-HILL/TUMOR…

CINCINNATI (AP) – Lauren Hill felt so good after fulfilling her dream that she felt inspired to play another game for Division III Mount St. Joseph’s.

Much depends on Hill’s health and energy as she deals with an inoperable brain tumor that has left her with just months to live. In between making two layups that started and finished Sunday’s 66-55 victory over Hiram College and brought a crowd of 10,250 to its feet, she spent much of her inspiring game sitting on the bench wearing sunglasses and headphones.

Hill’s condition has made her extremely sensitive to sensations her teammates and opposing players take for granted, but she still enjoyed the bright gym and the cheering crowd. And she certainly savored her two baskets in a game she described as amazing and awesome.

In World and national news…

PARIS (AP) – French officials say they have no leads yet as they investigate who might be behind a series of drone flights above French nuclear power stations. A government official tells The Associated Press that authorities have counted about 15 drone flights over a half-dozen nuclear sites since October 1. Authorities insist France’s nuclear facilities can handle security risks possibly posed by drones. France gets more than two-thirds of electricity from nuclear power.

NEW YORK (AP) – The head of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is declaring that “the New York City skyline is whole again” with the new World Trade Center taking in its first tenant today. Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, the new, 104-story, $3.9 billion skyscraper that dominates the Manhattan skyline is opening its doors to Publishing giant Conde Nast which begins moving in.

DETROIT (AP) – The first of several reports due today from automakers is a sign that sales are strong. Nissan’s U.S. sales rose more than 13 percent in October. The Japanese automaker says its Nissan and Infiniti brands sold just over 113,000 cars and trucks last month. Nissan sales rose almost 15 percent while Infiniti was down 1 percent. Nissan says high consumer confidence and low gas prices helped raised sales.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Federal investigators say a braking device deployed too soon on an experimental space tourism rocket that broke apart in flight over California’s Mojave Desert. The co-pilot died Friday and the pilot was able to deploy his parachute. The device has a two-step activation process, but apparently deployed by itself after the initial action to unlock it. That doesn’t fully explain the disaster and the investigation is months from being completed.

BEIRUT (AP) – Syrian activists say al-Qaida fighters from the Nusra Front are massing for a possible attempt to snatch a Turkish border crossing now held by other Syrian rebels. If Nusra Front fighters seize the crossing, it would block an important supply line for Western-backed rebels.
