WAHPETON (AP) The North Dakota attorney general has called for an independent review of a drug task force based in Wahpeton.
Wayne Stenehjem (STEN’-jem)’s order to investigate the Southeast Multi-County Agency comes after the disappearance and death of North Dakota State College of Science student Andrew Sadek.
Sadek had been facing drug-related charges. His mother says the drug task force pressured her son to work with them.
Sadek was last seen leaving his dorm in May. His body was found in the Red River near Breckenridge, Minnesota, in June. He died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Jamestown (CSi) Dietrich Bus Service syas that school buses used to transport Jamestown Public School students to and from school will no longer travel across the railroad tracks in the 1200 block of 3rd Street Southeast in Jamestown.
On Wednesday morning, a railroad crossing arm came down on a bus there.
Dietrich Bus Service in Valley City, Safety Specialist, Brian Yanish, says the driver of the empty school bus had reported the incident to Dietrich’s location manager in Jamestown. The incident remains under investigation by Dietrich Bus Service.
Yanish adds, when there are students on the bus, the bus doesn’t travel over the railroad tracks on 3rd Street Southeast.
BNSF says, there was no report of a signal malfunction with the crossing arm on Wednesday.
The railroad reviewed the signal and found it was working as intended on Wednesday.
The crossing was tested Friday and workers confirmed the signal was working as it should.
Jamestown (CSi) The James River Humane Society is offering a reduction on the adoption fees for cats and dogs through October.
On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable two James River Humane Society President, Matt Opsahl said the reduced adoption cost is $99.
He said the shelter has a large number of cats available for adoption with the number at 35, adding that the large number is requiring a few of the cats being placed in foster homes, until they are adopted.
He pointed out the the shelter has 16 dogs available. A few are from a recent Prairie Paws rescue from Minot, and are being socialized before adoption.
Opsahl said the paid weekend position remains open at the shelter, with pay rate at $10 per hour.
The James River Humane Society is located off the I-94 Bloom Exit.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Salvation Army Coats for Kids distribution starts today.
More than 200 children’s coats have been donated to the program.
Wal-Mart gave the Salvation Army a grant for $300 allowing the purchase of another 8 oto 10 coats.
Other area businesses that have helped donate coats include Ave Maria Village and Blue Star Dry Cleaning and Beyond.
There is a need for snow boots, including children’s winter boots.
Items may be dropped off at the Salvation Army office, on 1st Avenue North in Jamestown.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Police in Grand Forks are searching for a suspect in a convenience store robbery.
Police say the man entered Valley Dairy Big Cigs around 10:25 a.m. Sunday and brandished a handgun. Authorities say the man left the store with an undisclosed amount of money.
Authorities are asking that people with information on the incident contact the Grand Forks Police Department.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A 48-year-old Bismarck man is in custody after punching a Wal-Mart security guard in an attempt to resist being arrested in a shoplifting incident.
Police say a man is facing a robbery charge. Police didn’t publicly identify him.
Police say the security guard tried to stop the man when he was caught taking items from the store. Authorities say the man then punched the guard and unsuccessfully tried to run away.
The maximum penalty for a robbery charge is five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – Seven people were charged with drug-related crimes after police searched a Dickinson home.
Police found several people in the home who were smoking methamphetamine.
Thirty-six-year-old Jesse Clark faces the most serious charges. He’s charged with three Class C felonies. Police say he was found with heroin, morphine and codeine.
Court documents do not list an attorney for Clark.
Preliminary hearings for all seven defendants are set for Dec. 22.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – About 40 North Dakota Army National Guard soldiers will return to North Dakota today and Tuesday after a yearlong deployment in Kosovo.
The soldiers are members of the Guard’s Company C, 2nd Battalion, 285th Aviation Regiment that is based in Bismarck. The soldiers earlier this month arrived at Fort Hood, Texas, where they went through a demobilization process.
They will arrive on various flights to Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks and Minot.
The Guard says the soldiers supported an international peacekeeping mission. The unit operated Black Hawk helicopters as part of a task force that conducts military peace support operations in Kosovo.
The North Dakota aviators also provided air transport for U.S. and NATO Forces, including training and assistance to the Kosovo Security Forces.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A truck driver accused of illegally dumping saltwater in the western North Dakota oil patch has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Leo Slemin has pleaded guilty to violating state rules and regulations in a deal that calls for a suspended one-year jail sentence, three years of supervised probation and $3,525 in fines and fees.
Saltwater is a byproduct of oil production. It can pose a danger to the environment and must be disposed of in a manner that complies with the rules established by North Dakota’s Industrial Commission.
Slemin was a driver for Black Hills Trucking Inc. The state Oil and Gas Division is pursuing civil penalties against the Wyoming-based company.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Schools in North Dakota’s oil country have seen an increase in the number of students who are deemed homeless under federal regulations.
Williston Public School District No. 1 has 123 students considered homeless, while the New Public School District No. 8 in Williston has 115 students – 33 percent of the student body – who fall under that category.
Students are deemed homeless under federal law when they “lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.” Students living in motels, hotels, trailer parks and campgrounds are considered homeless.
Steve Holt is the superintendent of McKenzie County School District No. 1, which has 375 homeless students. Holt says the number of homeless students is a direct correlation to the oil patch’s lack of housing.
BURLINGTON, N.D. (AP) – A volunteer fire department in the western North Dakota oil patch is so busy that it doesn’t have time for its annual Halloween haunted house fundraiser.
The fire department in Burlington has hosted a haunted house the past five years. The event brought in about $10,000 each year for the department in the city of about 1,050 people west of Minot.
The volunteer firefighters say they don’t have time for a haunted house this year because of oil-related activity such as traffic crashes and hazardous material incidents, along with the training necessary to respond to those calls.
Department spokesman Karter Lesmann says firefighters are so busy that “it’s not really volunteer anymore.”
The department did keep its scheduled annual pancake breakfast fundraiser over the weekend.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs and industry leaders are expected at an energy conference in Bismarck this week.
The eighth annual Great Plains and EmPower ND Energy Conference is Tuesday at the National Energy Center of Excellence at Bismarck State College.
The conference is hosted by North Dakota’s congressional delegation and governor, BSC, the Great Plains Energy Corridor, KLJ and the state Commerce Department.
The congressional delegation says the conference will help highlight North Dakota’s approach to energy development. North Dakota has become the second-leading oil and gas producing state in the country while also developing renewable energy.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota pre-school teacher says he planted a few pumpkin seeds in August with the sole purpose of showing his students how they would blossom.
But Lincoln teacher Joshua Smith tells KXMB-TV he never imagined what those seeds would turn into.
Smith ended up with two huge pumpkins: One weighed 460 pounds and the other 500 pounds. The vines were 38 feet long.
Smith says decided to move the pumpkins to Papa’s Pumpkin Patch in Bismarck to give more children the opportunity to take a look. The pumpkins are so big that Smith had to use a special sling with his boat tire to move them.

The Jimmies host Mayville State, who were hammered by VCSU Saturday, next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rollie Greeno Field.

VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – Valley City State scored the first 21 points in less than seven
minutes Saturday as the Vikings routed visiting Mayville State 62-6 in NSAA football
action.
After making their first appearance inside the Top 25 poll at No. 23 this week, the
Vikings came out sharp Saturday at Shelly Ellig Field. The tone was set early as the
Viking defense forced a 3-and-out, and Lenzel Koskela blocked the punt and returned
it for a touchdown just 39 seconds into the game. It was the start of 28 straight
points for the Vikings, who led 28-0 after the first quarter and 41-6 at halftime.
After Koskela’s blocked-punt touchdown, VCSU’s defense forced 3-and-outs on
Mayville’s second and third drives of the game. Those stops led to two more
touchdowns on a 24-yard run by Ian Keller and a 4-yard run by Kurtis Walls. After an
interception by Mychael Bruce on Mayville’s fourth drive, the Vikings capped off the
first-quarter scoring barrage on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Walls to Antoine
Griffin.
Walls and Griffin hooked up six times on the day for 120 yards and three touchdowns.
Walls finished with 272 yards through the air and five touchdown passes, including
one each to Zach Johnson and Jake Miller. Trevor Goerts carried the ball 15 times
for 115 yards, and Ian Keller had 14 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown.
VCSU backup quarterback Josh Hansana capped off the scoring with an 85-yard
touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. He finished with six carries for 121 yards
and the score.
Valley City State out-gained the Comets 598-198 in total offense. The Viking defense
came up with four interceptions, one fumble recovery, three sacks and 11 tackles for
loss. Four different Vikings had six tackles to lead the defense: Marvin Conley,
Nick McBeain, Ethen Preston and PJ Peterson. Preston, Peterson and Bruenjes all had
a sack for the Vikings. Mychael Bruce had two interceptions and both Stevenson
Stlouis and Marvin Conley had one interception.
Mayville’s lone touchdown came on a 4-yard run by Lance Jackson midway through the
second quarter.
The Vikings improve to 6-1 overall. Mayville State drops to 2-5 overall. Saturday’s
game was a non-conference matchup. The two teams will play again Nov. 1 in Mayville
for the conference game.

The St. Louis Cardinals rallied to nip San Francisco 5-4 on Kolten Wong’s walkoff homer in the ninth inning. That followed homers by pinch-hitter Oscar Tavaras in the seventh and by Matt Adams in the eighth for the Cards.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals try for their 10th straight postseason victory — a streak that dates to 1985 when the Royals last won a World Series — tonight against slumping Baltimore. The Royals, who’ve won the first two games of the ALCS in Baltimore, go with Jeremy Guthrie tonight (8:07 p.m. Eastern) against Wei-Yin Chen, who was 16-10 in the regular season for the Orioles.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Tahir Whitehead intercepted Teddy Bridgewater twice as the Detroit Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings 17-3 yesterday. The Lions played a low-risk game and punted nearly as often as the Vikings did. But their defense made another case for top billing in the league. Ziggy Ansah had 2 1/2 of Detroit’s eight sacks. Bridgewater threw three interceptions in his second career start for the Vikings.
Peyton Manning moved closer to the all-time touchdown record by hitting for three against the Jets in a 31-17 win. Manning now has 506 career touchdowns, two shy of the record set by Brett Favre (farv). He could break the mark next Sunday at home against San Francisco.
Aaron Rodgers came through with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Quarless with 3 seconds left to give the Green Bay Packers a 27-24 win over host Miami. Rodgers finished with three touchdown passes and 264 yards while committing no turnovers. Green Bay has won three straight and is now 4-2 while the Dolphins dropped to 2-3.
Jay Cutler threw for 381 yards and a touchdown, Matt Forte (fohr-TAY’) ran for a couple of second-half scores, and the Chicago Bears picked up another road victory by beating the Atlanta Falcons 27-13 on Sunday. The 3-3 Bears have won three of four away from Soldier Field this season.

A new No. 1
UNDATED (AP) – There is a new team on top of The Associated Press Top-25 poll.
Despite the fact they have not been beaten, Florida State’s Seminoles have been replaced at the top of the AP poll by Mississippi State. The formerly No. 1 Seminoles were 38-20 winners over Syracuse in a road game Saturday, while then No. 3 Mississippi State knocked off then No. 2 Auburn, 38-23.
In the new poll, Mississippi State is first with FSU second, Mississippi third, Baylor fourth and Notre Dame fifth.
Auburn is now ranked sixth with Alabama seventh, Michigan State eighth, Oregon ninth and Georgia 10th.
Mississippi State received 1,480 points from the media panel with 45 first-place votes. Florida State got 1,415 points and 12 first-place nods and Mississippi three first-place votes and 1,413 points.
In the 78-year history of the AP poll no team has gone from unranked to No. 1 in just five weeks.

League MVP Durant may miss two months…Wizards’ Beal out 6 weeks.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – NBA MVP Kevin Durant of the Thunder has a fractured right foot and the team says it’s not sure how long he’ll be sidelined. General Manager Sam Presti says Durant informed the team of “discomfort” in the foot after practice a day earlier.
He underwent tests and the team says he was diagnosed with a fracture. The team says traditional treatment requires surgery, and recent NBA cases have resulted in a return to play in six to eight weeks.
Durant won the scoring title last season, collecting his first MVP award and leading the Thunder to the Western Conference finals. He skipped playing for the U.S. national team in this summer’s Basketball World Cup so he could get additional rest. He played in two preseason games before complaining of pain.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal underwent successful surgery to repair a non-displaced fracture of the scaphoid bone in his left (non-shooting) wrist. Beal is expected to miss approximately six weeks.

Bae wins opening PGA event of new season
NAPA, Calif. (AP) – Third round leader Sang-Moon Bae has won the PGA’s Frys.com Open in Napa, California. He shot a final-round 1-over 73 but that was good enough to beat Steven Bowditch by two shots. He’s the first player on the PGA Tour since Ben Crane at the St. Jude Classic in June to win with a final round over par.

Feng finishes first
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) – China’s Shanshan Feng rallied to win the LPGA tournament in Malaysia. She played a six-hole stretch on the back nine in 6 under to secure her fourth LPGA Tour title. The 25-year-old entered the round four strokes off the lead. She closed with a bogey-free 8-under 63 for a three-stroke victory.

STOCKHOLM (AP) – Research on market power and regulation translated into this year’s Nobel Prize in economics for French economist Jean Tirole (zhahn tee-ROHL’). It’s the first economics prize without an American winner since 1999. Tirole says he’s very moved by the honor.
AREQUIPA, Peru (AP) – Defense ministers from the Americas and some European nations are expected to attend a meeting in Peru today where Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will discuss plans for the Pentagon to get a better handle on how climate change will affect the military. The report is slated for release today. Military leaders have long warned that changing climate patterns will have a broad and costly impact on the Defense Department.
KIEV, Ukraine (AP) – Ukrainian military officials say there’s some evidence that Russian troops are actually returning to home bases following an order by President Vladimir Putin. The officials say they have observed a reduced presence of Russian troops in areas at the heart of fighting between government troops and separatist rebels. They also say Russian troops have been observed returning to home bases.
UNDATED (AP) – There’s cautious optimism in Spain about the prognosis for a nurse who contracted Ebola. The director of the Madrid hospital treating the woman says she is stable and doctors are cautiously hopeful she will recover. In Liberia, some nurses are turning up for work despite calls for a strike to demand better hazard pay. And in Texas, the investigation continues into exactly how a health care worker contracted Ebola while caring for an infected patient.
RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) – With $5.4 billion in pledges, the Palestinian prime minister is issuing a call to donor nations to honor their commitments to help rebuild the Gaza Strip in the wake of the 50-day Hamas-Israel war. The money was pledged during a one-day meeting yesterday in Cairo. After a previous war in 2009, only a small fraction of pledged money was actually sent.
