Local farmers and conservationists are invited to discuss the challenges and opportunities for conservation in North Dakota and how the 2014 Farm Bill’s conservation compliance requirements impact farmers.

This discussion will allow top officials to hear the concerns of farmers and to make sure the new rules are implemented in the least burdensome way according to Heitkamp.

As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Heitkamp helped write, negotiate, and pass the 2014 Farm Bill. Some North Dakota producers are facing challenges to meet conservation requirements.

The Roundtable discussion will be held

Wednesday, August 6 inside Valley City State University’s Froemke Auditorium, Foss Music Hall starting at 10:15am. The public is welcome to attend.

LISBON, N.D. (AP) – A 64-year-old Lisbon man is dead after crashing his small airplane near the southeastern North Dakota city.

The Highway Patrol says the man was the only one onboard the plane when it went down in a wheat field 4 miles northwest of Lisbon about 7:40 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities did not immediately release the pilot’s name or the type of plane he was flying.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Federal court officials in North Dakota are warning of an email scam inviting people to fill out online forms for jury duty.

The subject line is “EJuror Program” or something similar. Officials say the email contains spelling and grammatical errors and asks for sensitive, personal information.

All requests to complete a juror qualification questionnaire in federal court in North Dakota are sent through the U.S. mail. The official correspondence will have instructions for logging on to the court’s secure website.

Citizens who receive the phony emails are asked to contact the federal clerk’s office in North Dakota.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck police are marking the 20th anniversary of a woman’s disappearance with a renewed appeal to the public for information that might help solve the case.

Michele Julson has not been seen since she dropped her son off at his grandfather’s home on Aug. 2, 1994. She was planning to pick up her work paycheck but didn’t. Her car was found six days later at a hotel.

Julson was 26 when she disappeared. She is one of four open missing person cases in Bismarck.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Minnesota man has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide in the traffic deaths of two sisters in eastern North Dakota.

51-year-old James Yahnke (YAWNK’-ee), of Nielsville, Minnesota, is accused of being drunk and driving 94 mph on a rough section of a Traill County road north of Hillsboro in May and losing control of the car.

Authorities say Yahnke and the two women were thrown from the vehicle. Twenty-three-year-old Mercedes Rowley of Sharon and 21-year-old Teja (TAY’-tah) Beyer, of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, died at the scene. Yahnke was hurt and flown to a Fargo hospital for treatment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Three pigs exhibited at the recent North Dakota State Fair in Minot have tested positive for a strain of swine flu.

The state Agriculture Department says results from the National Veterinary Services Laboratory show the pigs tested positive for the H3N2 influenza virus.

Officials say influenza can spread from pigs to people, but there is no evidence that any people have become ill due to exposure to the pigs.

State animal health officials inspect all livestock displayed at the State Fair. Officials say the pigs appeared healthy when they arrived at the fair and became sick later. Their owners removed them after they were tested, at the recommendation of veterinarians.

State officials did not disclose who owned the pigs or where they came from.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Health Department says a storage tank in Bottineau County leaked five barrels of oil and 260 barrels of saltwater into a ditch and a farm field.

Health officials said Thursday that the spill occurred about four miles southwest of Antler at a site owned by Murex Petroleum.

Officials say about 420 barrels of fluid from the site has been collected, which includes rain water from the area.

State inspectors say samples have been collected for testing. Officials say the impacted soil at the site is being hauled to a disposal facility.

A barrel holds 42 gallons. Saltwater is a byproduct of oil production.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s congressional delegation says the state is getting more than $190,000 in federal funding to help communities handle hazardous material transportation incidents.

Sens. John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp say the funds are intended to improve preparedness and support training programs to help emergency responders.

The money comes from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Ag Coalition has joined the opposition to a proposed ballot measure that would set aside more oil taxes for water, wildlife and parks projects.

The group represents more than 40 organizations with various interests in agriculture. It joins the North Dakotans for Common Sense Conservation group in opposing the proposed Clean Water, Wildlife and Parks Fund.

Conservation advocates want 5 percent of the state’s oil extraction taxes for the proposed fund. The current fund is capped at $30 million during the state’s two-year budget cycle.

Supporters say more needs to be done to protect the state’s air, water and land.

Opponents worry the proposed fund would spend too much money with too little flexibility and also say it could take land out of agricultural production.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Minnesota Twins recalled first baseman Kennys Vargas from Double-A New Britain yesterday. Vargas hit .281 with 17 doubles, 17 home runs and 63 RBIs in 97 games with New Britain. He has a career .288 average in the minors and has never played in the majors.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Minnesota Twins have signed All-Star catcher Kurt Suzuki to a two-year, $12 million contract extension. Suzuki has been one of the few bright spots for the Twins this season. He is hitting .304 with two home runs and 41 RBIs.

UNDATED (AP) – The Detroit Tigers have amassed quite a collection of Cy Young Award winners.

The latest is David Price, who was acquired from Tampa Bay in a three-team deal with Seattle before Thursday’s trade deadline.

The Rays received left-hander Drew Smyly and minor league infielder Willy Adames from the Tigers. Tampa Bay also got infielder Nick Franklin from Seattle, with Detroit outfielder Austin Jackson going to the Mariners.

Price is 11-8 with a 3.11 ERA in 23 starts this season, two years after his first 20-win campaign.

The trade joins Price with Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander in the rotation for the AL Central-leading Tigers, giving Detroit the last three AL Cy Young winners.

Boston parted with ace Jon Lester and No. 2 John Lackey while getting a slugging outfielder who’s tailor-made for Fenway Park.

The Oakland Athletics have acquired Lester, outfielder Jonny Gomes (GOHMZ) and cash from the Red Sox for Yoenis Cespedes (yoh-EHN’-ihs SESH’-peh-dehs) and a draft pick. Lester is 10-7 with a career-best 2.52 ERA in 21 starts in his final season before becoming a free agent. He joins a rotation that already has Scott Kazmir, Sonny Gray and the recently acquired Jeff Samardzija (suh-MAR’-juh).

Cespedes was dealt to the Bosox a little more than two weeks after winning the Home Run Derby for the second straight year. He’s hitting .256 with 17 homers and 67 RBIs in 101 games this season.

The Bosox also shipped Lackey to St. Louis for fellow righty Joe Kelly and outfielder Allen Craig.  Lackey is 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA in the fourth year of a five-year, $82.5 million deal. Kelly is 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA in seven starts. Craig is batting .237 with seven homers and 44 RBIs.

In other deadline deals:

– The Red Sox have obtained third baseman Kelly Johnson from the New York Yankees for shortstop Stephen Drew, who is batting just .176 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 39 games this season. Johnson was hitting .219 with six homers and 22 RBIs in 77 games before landing on the disabled list.

– Atlanta has acquired utilityman Emilio Bonifacio (boh-nih-FAH’-see-oh), left-handed reliever James Russell and cash from the Chicago Cubs for catching prospect Victor Caratini.

– The Miami Marlins obtained right-hander Jarred Cosart, utilityman Kiki Hernandez and outfielder Austin Wates from Houston for third baseman Colin Moran, outfielder Jake Marisnick, right-hander Francis Martes and a 2015 compensatory draft pick.

– Oakland sent lefty Tommy Milone to Minnesota to reacquire outfielder Sam Fuld, who’s expected to help fill the void created by the A’s dealing Cespedes. Milone was 6-0 with a 2.87 in his last 10 starts for Oakland before he was send to Triple-A, prompting him to ask for a trade.

– Baltimore has picked up left-handed reliever Andrew Miller from Boston for minor league pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez.  The 29-year-old Miller has a 2.34 ERA in 50 appearances with the Red Sox this year.

– Washington has acquired two-time All-Star infielder Asdrubal (as-DROO’-buhl) Cabrera and cash from Cleveland for little-used shortstop Zach Walters.

– Seattle has acquired outfielder Chris Denorfia from the San Diego Padres for a pair of minor leaguers.
