Jamestown (CSi) The 2014 Community Block Party “Rock the Block” will be

Thursday, August 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Downtown Jamestown.

At the annual event, booths from businesses, organizations and University groups help welcome to the community, new and returning University of Jamestown students. Over 250 freshmen are required to participate, but many upper-class students will join as well.

On Friday’s Show Jamestown Chamber of Commerce, Executive Lisa Hicks pointed out, the Chamber and University of Jamestown is accepting registration for booth space.

In addition to a few blocks of First Avenue being closed north to the railroad tracks, this year entire block First Street South, between Second Avenue West and Second Avenue East will be closed as well.

Closing some of the streets in the downtown area allows booths to be set up by local businesses, charities, churches and other organizations.

Booths are free, and about 11 feet wide.

The event features free food, job postings, coupons and activities for adults and children.

As of July 24, 2014, 40 groups have signed up for the Block Party.

Another event organizer, Gary Van Zinderen at the University of Jamestown says, all booth availability will be taken over the next few weeks.

Local sponsors support the event costs at about $4,000 that helps pay for name badges, printing, postage, permits for closing the streets and more.

Generally only businesses with a local presence can participate.

Ms. Hicks added that Cavendish Farms gives out free, freshly-made french fries at its booth, and R.M. Stoudt gives away hot dogs.

Some new businesses have also signed up for the party.

Those attending will also be able to purchase food from vendors, when the free offerings run out, offering brats, ice cream and similar fairlike fare.

There will also be a dunk tank, inflatable games, a barrel train and other activities are also planned.

Businesses and clubs use the fair for a variety of purposes, including giving away samples and promoting services but also recruiting new employees and inviting students to join them.

To sign up for a booth or help sponsor the event, visit contact the University of Jamestown www.uj.edu http://www.uj.edu and click “Community.” Anyone with questions may call 252-3467, ext. 5563, or 252-4830.

Also to sign up for a booth or for more information, contact Lisa Hicks at the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce at 701-252-4830.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – New faculty and administrators at the

University of North Dakota are going on a three-day tour of the state next month.

The event is meant to give the new staff a look at the state and introduce them to alumni and others.

This year’s event starts on Aug. 18.

Planned stops include Hillsboro, Jamestown, Edgeley, Bismarck, Medora, Washburn, Cooperstown and Mayville.

Former UND President Tom Clifford started the bus tour 24 years ago.

Each year, the tour alternates between northern and southern routes across the state.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A part-time employee at the Tappen post office says she will plead guilty to theft.

Samantha Mittleider is charged in federal court with misappropriation of postal funds and false statements. Authorities say Mittleider stole money orders worth more than $1,100 between February and April 2013.

The plea agreement says Mittleider also failed to disclose she was fired from a previous job for theft.

A plea and sentencing hearing is scheduled Oct. 10 in Bismarck. The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison.

U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says reports of postal thefts are increasing in North Dakota and it’s important to prosecute cases even though the dollar amount may seem small.

A spokesman with the federal public defender’s office could not be reached for comment.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A judge has rejected a motion to throw out a lawsuit filed in December by two-dozen sex offenders who are civilly committed to the North Dakota state hospital.

The complaint accuses the state of favoring unnecessary punishment over treatment and violating the rights of the plaintiffs by depriving them of a realistic opportunity to be released.

The suit seeks class-action status for all people who have been civilly committed to the state hospital as sexually dangerous individuals.

The state had argued that the suit should be dismissed because the federal government should not be allowed to review the decisions of state district courts.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Attendance at this year’s North Dakota State Fair fell short of last year’s record.

The fair wrapped up its nine-day run on Saturday. Manager Renae Korslien (KORZ’-leen) says 314,446 people attended – the second-highest attendance on record.  Last year, 320,485 people passed through the gates.

Korslien says that she’s pleased with this year’s attendance, given that rain fell on a couple of the fair days.

Next year, the fair will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Marketing Director Jennifer Hubrig says staff is already working on some special activities.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A company exploring for natural gas outside of western North Dakota’s oil patch says it has found the resource.

Strata-X Energy received four drilling permits from the state last year for Emmons and McIntosh counties, in the southeastern part of the state. The Denver-based company drilled a well about 10 miles east of Linton in June and says it hit gas.

The company plans to drill three more wells later this year, as it works to determine whether future drillings in the two counties would be economical.

Strata-X has leases on about 187 square miles for its Sleeping Giant Gas Project.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Milk production in North Dakota during April, May and June was down 7 percent from the second quarter of 2013.

The Agriculture Department says production during the three-month period this year totaled 83 million pounds, down from 89 million pounds the previous year. The average number of milk cows during the quarter was 16,500.

Milk production nationally during the second quarter totaled 52.8 billion pounds, up 1.6 percent over the year.

WASHINGTON (AP) – David Fiebiger watched the collapse of trading company MF Global, but didn’t think the misdeeds of a big firm would have much effect on him or his Finley, North Dakota-based operation.

Fiebiger is the general manager of Finley Farmers Grain and Elevator. He says that new regulations from the Commodities Futures Trading Commission would eventually make it nearly impossible for him to use commodities markets to manage his risks.

Fiebiger – and many members of Congress – say regulations the CFTC put in place would eventually require much higher initial payments for trades, pricing smaller operations out of futures markets they use regularly to hedge their risks.

Congress is considering legislation that would undo the requirement. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., introduced legislation earlier this month that would do just that.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Supporters of two ballot initiatives spent the last week gathering signatures at the North Dakota State Fair.

Petitions were circulated for one measure requiring North Dakota schools to start after labor day and another measure that would establish a trust fund for water, wildlife and parks projects.

The deadline to get an issue on the November ballot is Aug. 6.

Charles Tuttle, of Minot, who manned a table outside the fair gate to solicit names for the school measure, says he collected about 2,000 signatures at the fair. He says bad weather on Saturday hampered efforts, but believes supporters are close to wrapping up the campaign.

The school initiative needs 13,452 signatures to qualify for the ballot.

In sports…

Jamestown (CSi) On Saturday and Sunday the 14th annual Jamestown Drag Races were held at Jamestown Regional Airport.

A record number of participants, were on hand with 159 cars Saturday and 144 cars on Sunday.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota has a full-time national anthem singer for its men’s hockey games at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The school says entertainer and motivational speaker Mark J. Lindquist will perform at all UND home games.

The Ortonville, Minnesota, native travels the country performing the anthem for collegiate and professional sports teams. He sang at the College World Series earlier this summer and will be performing for the Los Angeles Dodgers in August.

Lindquist is an actor who has appeared in ABC’s “Lost,” CBS’ “Hawaii Five-O” and the Universal Studios movie “Battleship.” He currently lives in Fargo, where he co-founded the company Breath Is Limited Motivational Speaking.

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota-based snack food company has inked a deal with a third Major League Baseball team.

Giants Snacks Inc. is now the official provider of sunflower seeds to the Texas Rangers. The Wahpeton company partnered with the Minnesota Twins in 2004 and with the Colorado Rockies in 2007.

Vice President of Marketing Robert Schulersays the deal with the Rangers will boost name recognition for the brand in Texas and help grow sales.

Schuler says baseball and sunflower seeds go together – and the company’s association with pro baseball teams is a natural fit. He says Giants Snacks is eyeing California as a possible next target.

BASEBALL-HALL OF FAME

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) – The Baseball Hall of Fame has added six new members who have taken their place among the greats of the game.

It was a big day for the Atlanta Braves, who saw former pitchers Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine enshrined along with longtime manager Bobby Cox.  Those three were part of a dominating Braves era that saw the team win 14 straight division titles.  Maddux and Glavine are 300-game winners and Cox is fourth on the all-time victory list.

No. 3 on that list is Tony LaRussa, who has also been inducted along with fellow managing great Joe Torre.  LaRussa is a four-time manager of the year who won 12 division titles, six pennants and three World Series. Torre is fifth on the managerial wins list and captured 10 division titles, six AL pennants and four World Series with the Yankees.

Slugger Frank Thomas rounds out the class of 2014. He hit .301 with 521 homers and 1,704 RBIs in his 19-year career mostly with the White Sox.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Capturing his fifth Brickyard 400 victory title yesterday, Jeff Gordon looked like the driver he was 20 years ago when he captured his first. The win moved Gordon into a tie with Michael Schumacher (SHOO’-mah-kur), who has five Formula One victories over the famed Indianapolis oval.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Carl Edwards’ 11-year run with Roush-Fenway Racing will end after this NASCAR season.

Roush officials confirm that Edwards will not be back in the No. 99 Ford, which had long been rumored but not substantiated because Edwards refuses to publicly discuss contract negotiations. He’s believed to be headed to Joe Gibbs Racing in a new fourth car, but his contract with Roush doesn’t permit him to announce his plans until September.

PARIS (AP) – Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali has won the Tour de France, becoming the first Italian to win cycling’s greatest race in 16 years.

GOLF-CANADIAN OPEN

The data recorders were sent to experts in Britain for examination.
