JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP CSi) – Authorities have recovered the bodies of two Idaho men believed drowned in a canoeing accident on Spiritwood Lake in southeastern North Dakota.

Searchers recovered the first body Monday afternoon and the second body Monday night about 9-O’Clock. The state medical examiner will conduct autopsies.

Authorities say a third man was able to make it to shore after the men’s canoe capsized about midnight Sunday.

Authorities did not immediately identify any of the men involved, pending notification of relatives, though Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser says the victims were contractors from Idaho who were remodeling a lakeside home.

Two remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) were used in the search and recovery operation in addition to sonar equipped boats from the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, Stutsman County Dive Team and one boat on loan from Gun and Reel.

On Monday, the Stutsman County Dive Team was called to an area of Spiritwood Lake.

Three men were canoeing on the lake late Sunday or early Monday when the craft capsized tossing them into the water.

One of the three men tried to save one of the other men, and was unsuccessful in an attempt to pull him ashore, as that individual sank in the water, and presumably drowned.

The surviving man helped searchers in locating the approximate area on the lake in which the incident occurred.

The men were camping when the three men went out on the water Sunday night.

Alcohol may have been involved, as the incident continues under investigation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Ten projects are getting a total of nearly $547,000 in funding this quarter from the North Dakota Agricultural Products Utilization Commission.

The group funds developers of North Dakota+farm products. It’s a program of the state Commerce Department.

The largest grant this quarter is going to C2renew Corp., which is getting $117,000 to work with three North Dakota companies to develop new bio-based material.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Department of Transportation will begin issuing redesigned driver’s licenses this week that feature revamped security features.

The new licenses have a different background color, improved printing and image overlap. Officials say these features will reduce counterfeiting.

The changes apply to all types of licenses including minor driver’s licenses and permits.

The department will begin issuing the new licenses at motor vehicle offices in Bismarck. Locations in other parts of the state will issue the new licenses later this spring and summer.

Drivers do not need to renew their current licenses until they expire.

TIOGA, N.D. (AP) – State officials have joined leaders of the oil conglomerate Hess Corp. in celebrating the upgrade of the company’s gas plant in Tioga. COO Greg Hill says the facility’s upgrade has reduced flaring from between 25 and 30 percent to between 15 and 20 percent. The company expects to reduce flaring to below 10 percent in the coming years.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Tribal leaders wants students sanctioned for wearing a T-shirt with a caricature of the University of North Dakota’s former Indian head logo drinking out of a beer bong. The shirts with the words “Siouxper Drunk” were worn at an annual spring party this month. UND’s president says federal privacy laws prohibit the school from identifying students who designed or wore the T-shirts or any action that may have been taken against them.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota corn farmers are having a tough time getting their crop in the ground because of a wet spring, and U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is asking the federal Agriculture Department to help them out.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service reports that less than one-fifth of North Dakota’s corn crop is in the ground. Normally at this time of year, more than half of the crop is seeded.

Heitkamp is calling on the Agriculture Department to delay the May 25th crop insurance planting deadline for corn in place for most North Dakota counties. After that date, farmers will see reduced crop insurance coverage because their crops will be deemed more susceptible to summer heat or fall frost.

The Agriculture Department’s Risk Management Agency didn’t immediately comment on Heitkamp’s request.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck State College is starting construction on a new Communications and Creative Arts Center.

The school scheduled a Tuesday afternoon ground-breaking ceremony for the facility on campus.

The 40,000-square-foot center will bring BSC’s English and visual arts departments together into a modern facility, and also will replace the library with a new learning commons.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Xcel Energy is coming to Fargo for its annual shareholders’ meeting.

Company officials say it makes sense to hold the meeting in North Dakota because of its vibrant economy and Xcel’s recent investment in new transmission lines across the state.

Xcel Energy provided electricity to 90,000 customers and natural gas to 48,000 customers in North Dakota, including Fargo.

The company does business in eight states.

The meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Fargo.

New York tracks have a rule prohibiting any equipment not specifically approved by stewards, and nasal strips were not on the list.

 NBA…

NEW YORK (AP) – The NBA has initiated a charge against Donald Sterling, setting up a June 3 hearing after which owners could vote to terminate his ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers. The charge asserts that Sterling has damaged the NBA and its teams, disparaged African-Americans and that his actions “significantly undermine the NBA’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.”

Sterling, who has been banned for life by Commissioner Adam Silver after the release of a recording in which he made racist remarks, has until May 27 to respond to the charge, and the right to appear at the hearing in front of the board of governors.

If three-fourths of the owners vote to sustain the charge, Sterling will be forced to sell the team he has owned since 1981.

INDY/NASCAR

     Busch suffers setback

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Kurt Busch’s attempt to complete “the double” may have gotten tougher. Busch crashed hard into the outside wall at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as his No. 26 car went through the second turn during practice for Sunday’s Indianapolis 500. Busch was checked at the infield medical center and cleared to drive.

He is attempting to become the fourth driver to complete the Indy 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. He will start 12th for the 500 if the car can be repaired. If Andretti Autosport uses a different car, Busch would start from the back of the 33-car field.
