Jamestown, (CSi)  Today  (Monday, May 12,  2014) releases from the Jamestown and Pipestem dams will be adjusted due to recent rainfall amounts in the James River Basin.

Pipestem Dam Manager Bob Martin, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, says the release from Pipestem Dam will be cut to 5 cfs, and releases from Jamestown Dam will increase to 445 cfs, for a combined release of 450 cfs.

Before Monday, releases from Pipestem Dam are at 50 cfs with 400 cfs from Jamestown Dam.

Martin said officials are attempting to have Jamestown Dam at its conservation pool, or normal level, of 1,431 feet mean sea level by June 1, 2014.

The water level atJamestown Dam was at 1,433.7 feet msl as of 1 p.m. Friday.

The water level at Pipestem Dam was at 1,457.7 feet and is rising about 4 inches per day.

The releases at Jamestown Dam have remained steady for much of the past week with outflows roughly matching inflows.

When Jamestown Dam reaches conservation pool, releases will decrease there and increase at Pipestem Dam.

Martin says release plans are based on average rainfall.

Any heavy rainfall may require increased releases to reach the target reservoir levels.

(CSi) The Bloom Township Board of Supervisors has denied a zoning permit needed by the city of Jamestown for landfill expansion. The planned expansion is adjacent to the current location.

Bloom Township Chairman Roy Werner, voted in favor of the zoning permit while Township Supervisors Duane Haskin and Jim Bredahl voted in opposition.

Those voting against awarding the permit wanted more information on the road used to bring garbage from the garbage bailer to the landfill.

Residents near the road said traffic to and from the current landfill caused excessive dust.

If the township approves the zoning permit, the city of Jamestown would then need to seek approval from the North Dakota Health Department for a landfill permit
