Jamestown (CSi) The University of Jamestown will present degrees to 190 graduates during its 108th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 10 at the Jamestown Civic Center. Baccalaureate takes place at 10:30 a.m. Commencement is at 2:30 p.m.
Dr. Gary Watts, Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs, will deliver the Commencement address.
Speakers representing the Class of 2014 are Stephanie Erlandson, an exercise science graduate from Breckenridge, Minn.; and Peter Odney, a mass communication graduate from St. Paul, Minn. Ben Kirkeby, Assistant Professor and Psychology Department Chairman, will deliver the Baccalaureate address.
Dr. M. James Scherbenske, a 1959 graduate from Falls Church, Va., will be inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame on Friday, May 9 and recognized at the Commencement ceremony. Dr. Scherbenske is retired from the National Institutes of Health as a health scientist administrator.
The University of Jamestown Concert Choir will present a Commencement Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 9 in Voorhees Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.
Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Regional Airport Manager, Matt Leitner says the airport staff is readying the facility for the start of skyWest’s Jamestown air service starting on June 5, 2014.
On Thursday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 Leitner said the SkyWest, United Airline service schedule is posted at the airport’s web site: http://flyjamestown.net/
He added that as of Thursday 275 boardings have been made through local travel agents, or on line at flyunited.com
Leitner noted that an Open House at the airport will be on June 20, 2014, with more information to be released later.
Leitner pointed out that Jamestown Regional Airport has received grant funding from the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission in the amount of $241,400 dollars.
The dollars will be used for upcoming projects including, airfield crack sealing and marking, the purchase of a new rescue and fire truck, wetland mitigation reduction and construction, the environmental assessment for jet service, and construction of a t-hangar building.
Leitner said the bid under review for the construction of an 8-unit hangar at $580,000 with officials to put together the financing package.
He added that the new fire and rescue truck with a capacity of 1,500 gallons will replace the truck now in use, with the price tag of $750,000. The state will pick up five percent, and the local share, also five percent is $37,500. The present unit will be traded in for the new truck. He said the present ARFF truck is fully operational and meets all of the requirements for the 50-seat CRJ-200. He said the airport would like to be proactive should Jamestown’s commercial air service be enhanced in the future, such as a 70 or 90-seat regional jet. Leitner said officials recognize that the state and community are poised for the continuation of large-scale economic growth and the objective as an airport is to be ready for it.
Another airport project is to establish parking for long-term, and short-term usage.
Jamestown (CSi) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, a Ravenna
Nebraska man was killed when he rolled his semi rig Thursday morning about 7:10 p.m., northbound on Highway One about nine miles north of Verona.
The 35 year-old was driving the semi that drifted off of the roadway into the East ditch, where it rolled onto the roof, pinning him inside.
He was not wearing a seat belt, and he died on the scene.
He was taken to the Oakes Hospital by the Oakes/LaMoure Ambulance.
His name will be released pending notification of relatives.
WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – A man charged in a fatal hit-and-run in Oakes a year ago has pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and prosecutors have dropped a murder charge against him.
Twenty-three-year-old Dakota Sutton, of Brampton, was charged in the April 2013 death of 28-year-old Reavis Dandridge. Prosecutors say Sutton forced Dandridge out of his truck, then ran him down and left him for dead.
Sutton pleaded guilty Thursday to manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence under the plea agreement with prosecutors.
Manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, compared to life behind bars for murder. A sentencing date was not immediately set.
Family members of Dandridge who live in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota say the plea deal is an injustice.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Fargo man is accused of stealing more than $50,000 in cash and jewelry from the home of a neighbor and family friend.
Charles Carney is charged in Cass County with two counts of felony theft. Police believe the thefts took place over a period of two to three years. Some of the stolen jewelry was tracked to local pawn shops.
The victim’s attorney, Randy Stefanson, says Carney was a trusted friend who had a key and “carte blanche” access to the property.
Lorelle Moeckel, Carney’s attorney, did not return phone messages.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Police say the suspect who assaulted a man inside a vehicle in Fargo lured the victim through an online sex ad and could be responsible for at least four similar attacks and robberies.
Authorities say the victim had responded to a Craigslist ad placed by 18-year-old Obsa Ali Omer. The victim was driving the two of them through a construction zone Wednesday afternoon when he was cut by Omer with a knife.
Fargo Police Chief Keith Ternes says Omer is suspected in two other assaults in Fargo and two robberies in Moorhead, Minnesota. Those cases also were related to online ads.
Police are asking victims of similar robberies to report them to law enforcement.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck man has pleaded guilty to forgery and counterfeiting charges in a case involving a Minot law firm. Brent Jungling entered his plea this week in a case where checks worth more than $90,000 were stolen and cashed from a law firm. Four other men have been arrested in connection with the case.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by a Washington state couple who were caught with medical marijuana.
Brian Kuruc and his wife, Rebecca Larson of Dickinson were apprehended last year at a Casselton motel. They entered conditional guilty pleas to possession of marijuana and tampering with physical evidence.
Defense attorneys argued that Kuruc and Larson both had valid pot prescriptions from Washington and the amount of marijuana was under their allowable limits.
The justices said in a ruling released Thursday that a prescription is not a valid defense and they don’t believe the Legislature meant to put the state “in the perplexing position” of recognizing prescriptions that can’t be legally obtained by its own citizens.
The court noted that medical marijuana is not legal under federal law.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The main railroad moving crude oil out of the rich Bakken formation in North Dakota and Montana says a new federal emergency order on rail shipments will not affect shipments. The U.S. Department of Transportation on Wednesday required railroads to inform state emergency management officials about the movement of large shipments of crude oil. BNSF Railway Company says it will comply with the new reporting requirements but it also “will continue moving the freight that our customers demand.”

Jamestown (CSi) The Stutsman County Wildlife Federation has canceled the Youth Fun Day that was rescheduled for Saturday May 10, 2014.
Spokesman Matt Opsahl says thr soil conditions are too wet at the Pipestem range to prepare the rifle range and hold the event. He says the event will be scheduled again next spring.
The club will meet Thursday night at 7:00, weather permitted the black powder and fireworks demo will be held after the regular meeting at about 8:00.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Park Board has approved a Hillcrest Municipal Golf Course improvement plan.
The project is expected to cost about $550,000.
Improvements planned include:
Filling the fairway bunker and regrade the fairway on hole No. 10;
Constructing bunkers and reconstruct the tees on hole No. 13;
Reconstructing the tees on holes No. 16, 17 and 18;
Reconstructing and leveling the tees on holes No. 1, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 15;
Leveling the green and fairway and reconstruct the green surround and bunker for hole No. 17;
Regrading the fairway and tees on Hole No. 11, including work to improve the cart path and culverts.
The commission approved an addendum in the contract with the golf course designer Herfort Norby Golf Course Architects, LLC, of Chaska, Minnesota.
Norby receiving $6,400 more for designing the following improvements:
The addendum includes an estimate of $90,000 to $110,000.
An estimate from Norby will be obtain for adding a second well to the golf course to improve the irrigation system.
Project funding will be discussed at the regular City Park Board meeting Monday, May 12, 2014.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Game and Fish Department is urging boat owners who still need to renew their registration to use the agency’s online renewal system to speed up processing time.
Department Licensing Manager Randy Meissner says the agency is dealing with a high volume of registrations as boat owners prepare for the new season. He says the processing time for mail applications is 10 to 14 days.
Meissner says that might be cutting it a little close for someone wanting to register a boat by Memorial Day weekend. And he says the processing time can be cut to just a few days through the online renewal system, at www.gf.nd.gov .
2014 is the first year of a three-year boat licensing period. More than 60,000 boat owners were mailed renewal notices in December.

MIAMI (AP) – The Miami Heat tied a franchise record with their eighth straight playoff victory last night. LeBron James scored 22 and Chris Bosh added 18 in the Heat’s 94-82 win over Brooklyn to take a 2-0 lead in that Eastern Conference semifinal.
Game 3 is Saturday night in Brooklyn.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) – The San Antonio Spurs went 2-up on Portland by routing the Blazers 114-93. Kawhi (kuh-WY’) Leonard scored 20 points to lead the Spurs and Tony Parker added 16 points and 10 assists.
The Trail Blazers host Game 3 on Saturday night.

MONTREAL (AP) – The Boston Bruins are going home tied 2-2 with the Montreal Canadiens for Game 5 Saturday night. Matt Fraser, in his first NHL playoff game, knocked in the game-winner at 1:19 of overtime to give the Bruins a 1-0 win last night.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – In the Freeway Series, the Anaheim Ducks posted a 3-2 road victory last night to cut the L.A. Kings’ lead in the series to 2-1. The road team has won every game in this Western Conference semifinal.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota took Anthony Barr, a linebacker out of UCLA, with the ninth pick. He was from offense to defense after two years in college and finished with 23 1/2 sacks in two seasons playing outside linebacker in 3-4 defense. The Vikings traded back into the first round to grab Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater with the 32nd and final pick of the first round last night. The Vikings wanted to jump in front of quarterback-needy Houston. Bridgewater threw for 3,970 yards with 31 touchdowns and four interceptions last season.
NEW YORK (AP) – The Houston Texans selected South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon (jah-DAY’-vee-ahn) Clowney with the top pick in the NFL draft last night. Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL’), aka Johnny Football and the Heisman Trophy winner in 2012, fell to No. 22 where he was taken by the Cleveland Browns.

NEW YORK (AP) – The Yankees will retire former manager Joe Torre’s No. 6, leaving Derek Jeter’s No. 2 as the last single digit in New York’s pinstripes.
Torre will also be honored with a plaque in Monument Park, along with Rich Gossage, Tino Martinez and Paul O’Neill.
Torre managed the Yankees to World Series titles in 1996 and from 1998-2000 and six AL pennants during 12 seasons as manager that ended in 2007. Currently Major League Baseball’s executive vice president for baseball operations, he is being inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame this summer.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The estranged wife of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling will fight to retain her 50 percent ownership stake in the team, her lawyer tells The Associated Press, adding an unwanted twist to the NBA’s plan to force new ownership on the franchise.
Shelly Sterling’s attorney, Pierce O’Donnell, says his client “will not agree to a forced or involuntary seizure of her interest.”
O’Donnell says “we will fight vigorously to defend her property rights.”
O’Donnell says Mrs. Sterling has no interest in managing the Clippers and wants a new investor group to come in with a professional management team.

MOSCOW (AP) – President Vladimir Putin is making his first trip to Crimea since Russia annexed the formerly Ukrainian peninsula. The trip follows a massive show of military muscle today in the annual Red Square parade marking victory over Nazi Germany. The celebrations come as pro-Russian insurgents in eastern Ukraine prepare a referendum on secession similar to the one held in Crimea.
BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) – The government of the Nigerian state of Borno has identified by name the 53 girls who escaped from Islamic militants. The move is generating concern that the girls could be stigmatized now that their names are public. Boko Haram (BOH’-koh hah-RAHM’) abducted more than 300 girls from a school last month. Some 276 remain missing, and U.S. officials are arriving in Nigeria to help the government find and rescue them.
WASHINGTON (AP) – House Democrat leaders will meet with rank-and-file members this morning to decide whether to participate in a new investigation of the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, or boycott the election-year inquiry. After 13 public hearings on the incident, Democrats are accusing Republicans of politicizing a tragedy that left four Americans dead, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – President Barack Obama is promoting advances in energy efficiency at a Wal-Mart in California today. It’s part of his broader campaign to confront climate change. The White House says Wal-Mart has committed to doubling the number of solar energy projects at its facilities. But the choice of location is drawing complaints from labor unions and pay equity advocates who say it conflicts with Obama’s emphasis on pay issues because Wal-Mart wages are low.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – A senior South Korean prosecutor is confirming that the president of the company that owns the ferry that sank off the South Korea coast last month has been formally arrested. Kim Han-sik is facing allegations that he was aware that the ferry exceeded its cargo limit but didn’t do anything to stop it from leaving port. More than three weeks after the sinking, 273 bodies have been retrieved while 31 others remain missing.
