As more people find comfort in the cloud, IT infrastructure professionals say their perception towards in-housing services has now shifted. According to Hostway, recent survey findings show that IT professionals would rather store their sensitive data in the cloud rather than through the use of an in-house service.

The survey, conducted in June at the 2013 Cloud Expo East, was designed to measure participant perceptions about security, scalability, and performance of key services in public cloud vs. in-housing environments.

When asked which service – web servers, database servers, email services, CRM and other collaboration software – was more secure in either environment, 62 percent of respondents said they felt safer and more comfortable with cloud services.

As for scalability, 80 percent said the public cloud services were more scalable over in-house. Meanwhile, 73 percent said the overall performance of these core services were best when hosted by the cloud.

While database services were shown to be the most debated of services measured, with 55 percent choosing cloud services; overall, the results show a higher percentage of IT professionals more interested in the public cloud hosting serves than in-house resources.

A cloud computing report from IDG Enterprise, found that 61 percent of organizations today have at least a portion of their computing infrastructure in the cloud, as stated by Eweek.

According to Eweek, the report found that cloud computing capabilities that align with a company’s business strategy are driving investments, led by enabling business continuity (43 percent) and improving customer support and services (43 percent).

“Private cloud models continue to maintain the largest footprint,” said Bob Melk, senior vice president, group publisher and CMO of IDG Enterprise in a statement to Eweek. “However, the different factors that contribute to these decisions continue to evolve.”

“The sensitivity of compliance, security management as well as cultural implications and total cost of ownership is driving each organization to evaluate their risk tolerance with unique business needs in order to execute their optimal cloud strategy,” added Melk.

IDG also found that increasing flexibility to react to changing market conditions and reducing resources waste was another key driver in investments toward the cloud, as stated by Eweek.

“We’ve noticed a trend toward greater acceptance of public cloud hosting services over the past year,” said Aaron Hollobaugh, vice president of marketing at Hostway. “Organizations that were previously hesitant are now moving larger, more robust database workloads into the public cloud environment, and we’re seeing rising demands for hybrid or public cloud installations from companies that previously used more traditional managed hosting services.”
