Crystal Cove’s beautiful vistas, bright sun, and boundless energy have been inspiring artists since the early 1900s. Today, Crystal Cove Alliance celebrates this long history of Plein Air art through the Crystal Cove Interpretive Store’s juried art program, which is opening its 2017 call for applications from new and returning artists on October 1.
The Interpretive Store’s art program is run with the help of the Crystal Cove Alliance Art Council, which celebrates its eleventh anniversary this month. Every year in December, the Art Council votes to select a new group of talented artists to bring Crystal Cove’s special magic to life, capturing the historic cottages, enigmatic rock formations, and tide pools bursting with activity that make the Cove so special.
These distinguished artists display their work in the store and at art shows throughout the year. In addition, they generously donate half of the proceeds from the sale of their paintings to Crystal Cove Alliance, providing a sustainable source of funding to support CCA’s mission of education, conservation, and preservation at Crystal Cove State Park.
When the juried artist program was first started by the CCA Art Council in 2005, it featured Plein Air oil and watercolor paintings in the California Impressionist style. Interpretive Store manager Kian Maleki is hoping to broaden the scope even further during the 2017 jurying process, which is open for applications from new and returning artists until November 15.
“Crystal Cove Alliance has worked hard to protect the tradition of Plein Air art at Crystal Cove State Park,” Kian says. “With our abundant scenery, it’s easy to see why people flock here to paint. We’re excited to expand our program to include more diverse styles and to invite even more artists to experience and express the beauty of the Cove.”
