Scenic Gem (built 2014) is the fourth in a series of five, new-design Scenic Tours ships launched in the 2012-2016 period – together with its Scenic-named fleetmate sisters Crystal, Jade, Jewel and Amber. These luxury river ships, along with the 2015 launched Opal and Jasper, are part of the Scenic Tours fleet expansion, making this company one of the top-choice all-inclusive river cruise lines in Europe. Each of the Scenic cruise ships is ~20% longer but with smaller capacity, allowing larger accommodations and public space in comparison to standard river travel boats operated on Europe’s main waterways. All Scenic Gem cabins are with max capacity of 2 guests per cabin. With the exception of the lower Jewel Deck cabins (water level location), all of the Jade boat’s staterooms (80%) are Suite accommodations – each with a private balcony for all-weather use. The number of cabin categories is 12.

Scenic Gem cabins review
Follows review of Scenic Gem cabins as amenities, furniture and complimentary services:
Unlike most Scenic cruise ships, Gem has no single cabins (balcony suites that can be booked with single occupancy supplement rates).
All Scenic Gem rooms have twin beds convertible to queen, luxury bedding sets, bedside tables, luxury en-suite bathroom (WC, sink, shower cubicle, lighted mirror, color lighting system, luxury bath products /shampoo, liquid soap, conditioner, body lotion), slide-door closets (hangers, drawers, shelves), flat HDTV (linked to an Apple-Mac mini computer with Infotainment system, radio and “View From the Bridge” /real time webcam views), desk, book case, safe, leather chair, mini-bar (complimentary, restocked daily with soda, juice, sparkling water, liqueur, snacks), iPod station (clock), hairdryer, bathrobes, slippers, umbrella, individual climate control, 220V power outlets (European/Australian sockets only, Americans need adapters).
All staterooms on Jewel Deck are with fixed / non-opening Picture Windows, which are located high-up on the riverside wall. All the rest accommodations (all in Suite categories) are with floor-ceiling sliding doors opening to a private, full-size veranda (round table, wicker chairs). These balconies are widely known as “Sun Lounges”. This is a glass-enclosed area (part of the cabin) with comfortable seating, located behind floor-ceiling opening windows. Behind the windows there are sheers and blackout curtains. The cabin’s “sun lounge” portion can easily transform into an outdoor veranda at the push of a button.
Suite bathrooms are with large glass-enclosed showers with doors.
The two Deck 3 (aft-location) Royal Panorama Suites are the largest accommodations on the Jade ship. They plans feature aft wall windows, large sitting area with sofa, luxury bathroom with separate shower/bathtub, wrap-around balcony.
Royal Suites are with larger sitting area (with sofa), bathrooms with dual sinks, separate bathtub/shower and ample cabinet space.
Junior Suites have bathtubs and expanded vanity sink areas with mirrored cabinets.

Complimentary butler service is available for all passengers. It includes shoeshine, shore excursions arrangements, Spa reservations, drinks service. Bonus services available to passengers in all grades balcony cabins are morning coffee/tea and cocktail parties arrangements.
Additional perks for Diamond Deck passengers are the room service breakfast and complimentary pressing (2 items daily).
Royal Suite butler service also includes luggage unpacking/repacking, free laundry/pressing, in-room dining service.
Laundry/pressing services for a fee are available for all Standard cabins (no self-serve laundry facilities on the ship).
Cabin service is twice daily.
On Scenic Tours land excursions, each of the passengers receives a ScenicTailorMade device (GPS tracking system). These GPS devices also function as listening device (when switched on the tour guide channel /headset). Their other features are the uploaded digital maps (useful on individual tours in cities, with indicated key attractions, prerecorded commentaries, photos) and can be used for listening the cruise director’s commentaries during scenic river cruising along the itinerary route (thus replacing the passenger-announcement system).

Scenic Gem Deck 1 Plan – Jewel
All staff accommodations, crew cabins and the crew lounge/dining area are after the passenger staterooms. Aft are the ship’s engine room and propulsion units.
Service and storage areas are positioned forward (water storage and ballast tanks).
Elevator (lower level 1 of 3)
Wellness Area includes small Spa facility (massage room), Beauty Salon (manicures/pedicures, hairdresser/barber services) and Fitness Centre (elliptical trainer, recumbent bike, rowing machine, treadmill, large-size TV). Bottled water and towels are complimentary.
Jewel Deck cruise cabins from 100 to 115, all of of which are Picture Window rooms (categories D and E).
Scenic Gem Deck 2 Plan – Sapphire
Elevator (mid level 2 of 3)
Crystal Dining Restaurant is the Jade ship’s open-seating Dining Room with single-seating capacity, floor-ceiling windows on both sides, rectangular and round tables, buffet station in the middle. Dining times here are: Breakfast (7-9 am), Lunch (12:30 – 1:30 pm), Dinner (7 pm). Tables capacity is 2 and 3 seats, but can be put together to accommodate large groups.
Breakfasts and lunches are buffet-style, with some hot dishes available for off-menu ordering (like French toast, oatmeal, eggs). Breakfast menu has fruits, cheeses, cereal, yogurt, breads, pastries, scrambled eggs, cold meats, fish, plus made-to-order omelet station. Lunch menu has salads, sandwich fixings, 2 soups, 2 main dishes (incl vegetarian), regional cuisine specialty, pasta and carving stations, cheeses, desserts (incl cookies, cakes, ice cream). Dinners (waiter-served) as menu feature 2-3 appetizers, 1 soup, 1 entree (incl meat, seafood, vegetarian), 1 dessert. Always available are salads (green, Caesar), hamburgers/cheeseburgers with fries, chicken, salmon, steak, cheese plate for dessert. Captain’s formal dinners (Welcome/Farewell) are also held here. At lunches and dinners are offered complimentary wine, beer, soft drinks.
Scenic Gem cruise director often schedules culinary-themed events on the ship, including galley tour or cooking demonstrations by some of the boat’s chefs.
Table La Rive is for the Scenic Tours’ Chef’s Table private dining concept. This is a 10-seat table set up at the dining room’s end, where guests can enjoy a 3-hour long gourmet dinner with 6-course menu, complimented by fine wines (different wine by course).
Sapphire Deck cruise cabins from 201 to 235, all of which are Suites in categories Balcony Suite (BA, BB, C-aft, and BD-Deluxe) and Junior Suite (categories BJ, B1J, and BS /single suite).
Scenic Gem Deck 3 Plan – Diamond
Elevator (lobby / upper level 3 of 3). Diamond Deck is the ship’s Lobby Deck, where are located:
Reception Desk – provides 24-hour guest services (assistance, information on the daily scheduled activities, purser service, Cruise Director, Scenic Tours cruise shore excursions/Spa reservations).
Gift Shop sells mostly luxury jewelry and watches, along with Scenic Tours logowear and local /itinerary-based merchandise (gifts, souvenirs).
In the lobby there are also coffee corner and tea station (flanking the entrance, both are complimentary and 24-hour operational).
Panorama Lounge & Bar is the ship’s show lounge with floor-ceiling windows, large-screen TVs (also employed by the Scenic Gem’s cruise director for lectures and presentations), grand piano (afternoon and evening performances by resident pianist/singer), comfortable seating (leather sofas/chairs). The daily program here has port talks, while in the evenings are presented crew show (talent show), folkloric show (by local musicians/dancers), themed dance parties. Panorama Lounge doubles as Library (has wall shelves with books and tour guides).
Panorama Bar drinks are complimentary (incl specialty cocktails and coffees, fine wines, mocktails, martini of the day). The Bar has an Enomatic wine dispenser and professional espresso machine (both are free of charge).
River Cafe is waiter served, and offers early/late breakfasts, light snacks during the day (incl sandwiches, pastries, ice cream), light lunch menu (pasta, burgers, daily soup/salad). The Cafe has dedicated staff serving the River Terrace on the Sun Deck.
Panorama Deck is the ship’s forward-location Observation Lounge & Bar. This lounge has indoor seating area (with coffee bar) and separate outdoor area with few tables and chairs.
Portobello’s Restaurant (capacity 25 seats) is the Italian gourmet cuisine restaurant (complimentary, dinner only, reservations recommended).
Diamond Deck cruise cabins from 301 to 337, all of which are suites in categories Balcony Suite (A, PA and PP), 1x Junior Suite (category RJ-forward), 2x Royal Panorama Suites (aft-ship location, category RS) and 4x Royal Suite (categories RA and R /both mid-ship).
Scenic Gem Deck 4 Plan – Sun
Sun Deck is accessible only by stairs. This is the best vantage point to enjoy the 360-degree countryside panorama along the Scenic Gem itinerary route.
Navigation Bridge on river cruise ships is called “Wheelhouse”. The Bridge is passenger accessible and telescopic (can be lowered for passing under low bridges).
Riverview Terrace is a forward-location observation deck with wicker chairs and wooden tables (some umbrella coverage). This is also an al fresco dining venue served by dedicated staff from the River Cafe below.
Sun Deck is a vast outdoor seating area with tables, fabric chairs, luxury loungers. There are also three retractable awnings (shaded seating zones for relaxation) that can be lowered when the boat passes under low bridges.
The ship’s top deck also has Walking Track (to be used between 8 am – 10 pm), Giant Chess set (aft), bike station (30 electric-assisted bicycles). Bikes are complimentary, so passengers can use them on all guided land excursions and tours, or on individual tours onshore.
